Well right now I'm pretty set at the following base:
ASUS H87M-E € 76,72 Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3-1600 CL9 kit € 49,99 Intel Core i5 4670 € 190,00 LG GH24NS95 € 15,45 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit NL OEM € 82,85 MSI N760 TF 2GD5/OC € 234,50 Samsung 840 Evo 120GB € 88,90 Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB € 55,00 Seasonic M12II Bronze 520W € 56,00
Now if go with the more expensive additions: - Fractal Design Define R4 €92 - Eizo Foris FS2333 €303
I'm at 1300€ already sans headset. Thats 300 above my original budget. With the cheaper additions: - Fractal Design Core 3000 €65 - Dell U2312HM €177
I'll be at around 1100€, still 100 above my budget but a lot more manageable. So I think I'll go with that one, but I'm a little hesitant on the Dell. It has great reviews everywhere, but I've been hearing stories about terrible backlight bleeding. Is that really an issue on that particular monitor? Is it like a small% of screens that has that issue? Because I don't really feel like playing monitor roulette or is that unavoidable?

Playing monitor roulette is unavoidable if you want a display without bleed or glow. You just hear about it much more on Ultrasharps because they are vastly more popular than any other models out there.
|
Also, a lot of people sit in rooms that are too dark and use monitor brightnesses too high. It's going to be more noticeable in those conditions and if viewing content with black around the edges.
Well, you have to play panel roulette no matter what, but you can look at the above to see how many of the above risk factors, so to speak, apply to you. It may be unlikely or somewhat likely to get bleeding at a level that is unacceptable for you.
If you're worried about price, you could get a cheaper motherboard (H81 and B85 chipsets both work too), a lower-end i5, or a different graphics card (say GTX 660 or HD 7870, which are both pretty reasonable). Considering the price, you're probably better off with the U2312HM unless the graininess of the matte coating is too much for you.
|
I personally have no issue with my U2713HM's. I run them at 15-35% brightness in the dark, FWIW.
|
Yeah but 20% on U2713HM is ~75-100cd/m^2 (per TFTCentral, Prad) which is kinda still too high for usage in the dark. But that's a separate issue I guess, as long as you don't notice bleeding and your retinas don't burn.
Meanwhile (the reason I'm bringing this up) 0% on the U2312HM is ~110cd/m^2 which is pretty blinding when used in the dark. Not sure if Dell fixed the issue but I would always mention this caveat to anyone considering the monitor. U2212HM doesn't have this problem and has higher contrast ratio - it's a better monitor overall.

such a great post! thanks so much for your efforts

short question: I'm planning to buy a new SSD since my old one died. Now my MoBo only supports SATA-II, and I've got those 3 SSD's in mind: Samsung 840, 250GB, ~140€ Samsung 840 Evo, 250GB, ~160€ Kingston HyperX 3k, 240GB, ~160€
So right now the higher writing speed of the Evo and the 3k will not benefit me because of only SATA-II, but thinking of the future it might be a good investment. Also I have no idea about IOPS and such things, so which one would you recommend (or do you have any better suggestions)?

+ Show Spoiler [Build] +What is your budget? I want to stick to a sub 1k budget but I'm flexible up to 1100.
What is your monitor's native resolution? Dual 1920x1080s
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? I currently mainly play fighting games and I'm probably going to look into FF14 as well. I'd like to be able to get close to max settings but I'm willing to take it down a notch if I have to to stay in budget.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? I want to stream on Twitch as I play and I'm also interested in learning some Photoshop.
Do you intend to overclock? Yes.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No.
Do you need an operating system? No.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Yes, I'd like to include them in the budget but it's not a huge huge deal if they aren't.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Nothing specific.
What country will you be buying your parts in? USA.
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. No preferences.
So the current build I have planned out is.
CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard Will buy from Microcenter. Projected to be 426.58 after tax
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory I just picked this ram for now, I'll probably wait for any decent 2x8 deal.
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk I already have a 320gb hd I'll probably reuse and a 1 TB external.
Video Card: MSI Twin Frozr Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card Going to hold out and see if this goes on crazy sale again like it did just last week.
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower Case 75.24 after tax.
Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply 34.49 after tax+rebate
That leaves around $465 for the ram, gpu, SSD, and peripherals.
For peripherals I'm probably going to get a U2312HM and a 2013 Deathadder. I already have a mech I like very much.
Any recommendations for what I plan to do? Did I choose decent parts? This will be my first "real" computer. I did put together the desktop I'm using right now but it's literally a mishmash of whatever happened to be the cheapest at the time. This time I actually put some thought into it. Thanks in advance guys.

What do the other boards cost? How much are you paying for 4770k+ud4h over say, 4670k + z87x-d3h?

Samsung 840 EVO is the best of the three.
Sequential writes is by far the least important aspect of the SSD. The operating system, applications, and games are mostly random reads/writes and sequential reads.

Choose a different PSU. See here why not this one: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2008/11/12/ocz_700w_modxstream_pro_power_supply/9

Hey Marc gave me this build for my PC. This is the budget of 1,000 euros and wanted to know what you guys thought. I want to play Battlefield 4 at really, really high settings and am thinking about streaming.

Thanks for the advice guys! CPU-Z says its d0, so I'll be buying an aftermarket cpu cooler that has compatibility with the lga 1366/1150 so I can reuse it if I decide to move up to Haswell.

What is your budget? ~700€
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1680x1050
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Dota 2. Random AAAAA games. Highest possible settings. I hate aliasing and when stuff flicker (even more after playing some PS3 games lately. Battlefield 3 is so ugly on PS3 T_T).
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Programming (Unity, Visual studio).
Do you intend to overclock? I'm too lazy for that.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Nope.
Do you need an operating system? No.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. NVIDIA (for CUDA, OptiX etc.) but it isn't must have.
What country will you be buying your parts in? Germany
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. If someone knows good (aka cheap) retailer from Berlin i would be grateful
My build so far: CPU: Intel Core i5-3350p Mobo: AsRock Z77 Pro3 GPU: GeForce GTX 670 RAM: Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz CL9 HyperX Black PSU: Thermaltake Smart M550W SSD: Plextor M5S 128GB (I still have my old hdd so I don't need more storage space) Case: Corsair Carbide Series 200R
Questions: 1. Should i get better CPU? Something like Intel Core i5 4570K? 3350p seems to be able to handle any game. With this CPU I can save some money and get better GPU which seems more important as far as performance in games goes. 2. Mobo, PSU and RAM are random. Do you have better ideas? 3. Do you thing it's good idea to wait for new AMD cards to be released before buying a GPU? I can still use my old Radeon 4870 HD for some time.

I just grabbed the numbers from the microcenter site real quick. Pretax it's $280 for a 4770k and $200 for a 4670k. The ud4h is $115. They actually don't offer the z87x-d3h just the z87mx-d3h, Another option microcenter has for the mobo would be like an extreme 4 for $95.

Before I purchased I did read a few reviews for the 600w version of the modxstream pro. I understand that it's not the end all be all PSU but all of the reviews gave it a more favorable impression than the one you linked me. Are there differences between the 600w vs the 700w besides how much power they can put out?

Sorry double post. Meant to edit.

Well, the thing it has going for it is the price it's going for in your list. Just be aware that this price is actually what you get. If you compare just the specifications between this one for $35 and a Capstone 450W which you'll get for $60 at newegg.com, it looks like this:
Capstone 450W: It does 12V * 37A = 444W at 50C (122 F). It's not modular. The modular version is another $10.
ModXStream 600W: It does 12V * 42A = 504W at 40C (104 F). It's modular.

At a 700 euro budget? I wouldn't be taking big luxuries like a 250gb ssd (unless maybe it's your only storage?) on a tight build where you can't afford CPU OC or a high end graphics card
This is pretty much the only info we have for bf4 CPU usage so unless it's brought down a lot coming into launch you're kinda screwed for streaming
