Right now if you've got a 970, going to the RX 480 is a bit of a side-grade. For me, it would be a good upgrade from my 7970, I guess. It's certainly a good card, a good deal as well. If I were shopping for a new GPU, I'd get it for sure. But for an upgrade, I don't feel like it. Not worth the cash.

Paying $380 instead of $200 to gain over 2.75x performance instead of 1.65x performance (extremely rough numbers) actually makes some sense - the "performance gained per dollar" ratio is actually quite bad when you're upgrading to something that's relatively close to what you already have. The rx480 / 970 performance tier is also just pretty low in 2017 era. We don't have 14/16nm flagships yet and when they arrive for the generation you'll see the rx480 positioned in price and performance in a similar way that the gtx950-960 is now - as much as three to four times slower than the flagships. Pretty nice if that's what you want, but when they say "high end performance for $200" they're talking about high end in 2013

If you aim for 1440p gaming then 1070 of course is the best you can get currently considering price/performance. I also don't undestand the point of 970 to rx 480. Like, thats not the target of this card. Those that have 270/280/960/950 or 750 TI on the other hand should be interested. You need to understand that there is world outside of Western Europe/USA where those 200$ is actually meaningfull ammount of cash for quite a big portion of population.

About 2017 era i have no idea cause we are not there and i don't see single PC game on the horizon that would even suggest that it can criple current mid-high tier graphic cards. Most demanding game for me that i've played recently is Warhammer Total War and its more CPU issue than graphic card. As long as current gen consoles suck on tech side those cards will provide. Depending on your answers I have a follow-up question about possibly replacing it and buying a new rig. So basically, some time ago, I had to buy a new laptop for use at my job. I am a data scientist and programmer, and as such I focused mainly on getting enough RAM (16Gb) and a quad-core processor (Intel Core i7-4712MQ CPU @ 2.30GHz). I figured I'd throw in a decent graphics card as well (GeForce GT 740M @ 2048MB) so I could use the rig for gaming as well. Now, the laptop works fine for professional purposes. However, I cannot get a decent framerate in any game I play. I like to play ARPGs (Diablo3, Path of Exile) and also games like GTA5. Every game I have tried so far has been a disaster. I've had to turn down settings to the absolute minimum, and then I would still struggle to get a steady 30fps even after lowering the resolution below 1920x1080. Do you guys have any clue as to why the performance is so poor? Is gaming on a laptop just a terrible idea? For reference, here is a Speccy screenshot of my system: + Show Spoiler + Now, if I can indeed not expect any proper gaming performance from my laptop, I am going to need your help once again. In that case, I am planning to build a proper gaming laptop with a budget of around 1,000 euro's. I will use the resources in the OP to propose a build. But maybe I could first get some input on my laptop situation CPU is usable, graphics isn't. A 740m is just that bad unfortunately, could easily be 7-10x worse than a $200 desktop GPU today. It's very hard to game on a laptop without weight, noise and a lot of $$$ Ugh, that is bad news I guess I will have to bite the bullet and buy a new desktop computer. Thanks for your input though! If only I had asked here before buying it... I will post a desktop build proposal here later today!

Do I need to pay the full retail price for it or are there any discounts? It actually is not, if im not mistaken. There are different kinds of licensing for Windows, retail or OEM, and some other things to know. I found an amazing site explaining that but its in french :/ Youve got to check the serial number of your copy to check which kind of license it is, and if it's machine bound or not. If it isnt, then you Can desactivate your key from your previous comp and use it onto your new. Works like that for 7-8 afaik, but i think it's the same for 10.

MSI Z170A PC Mate LGA 1151 ATX Intel Motherboard $114.99 Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI LGA 1151 ATX Intel Motherboard $134.99 ASUS Z170-E LGA 1151 ATX Intel Motherboard $139.99 ASUS Z170-Deluxe LGA 1151 ATX Intel Motherboard $299.99 (bit pricey) Several of these are 1 in-stock so the sooner I decide the more chance I'll actually get one. There's so many different motherboard models with different features it's hard to research them all and choose one. I intend to do a decent overclock but nothing insane, prolly something around ~4.5 at most. Rough draft of full build: heres the general idea, I'm getting a 1080 as a gift so trying to build something decent around that.

The PC Mate definitely looks like a solid board for the price on paper, although there's a decent number of reviews saying they got boards with broken memory slots or such. Also not that it matters too much at the moment, but I'm not sure this board does SLI. I don't think the Z170-E has USB 3.1, which is a bit sad, so I'm kinda down to deciding between the PC Mate and the XP-SLI.... or saying fuck it and getting the deluxe. Seems like major difference is the XP-SLI has the better audio codec and is SLI capable, has a little better reviews online.

So I called my local Fry's, which is only 2 miles away instead of 60 and they said they will price match microcenter. Although only on single items, so I could go grab the 6700k for 289 but not get the extra 30 off a motherboard I think. Might try that instead since microcenter has like nothing in stock and is so far.

I don't really know what the most cost efficient parts are for low end builds, i'd like to get her a quality build tho (so something that's very power efficient). she also needs an OS, i wanna order her comp from: http://www.ncix.com/ so: mobo + cpu + ram + hdd + case + psu + wifi card + decent gpu + os i don't need to get a cooler right?

So I am in the market for a new desktop computer. Here's the answers to the questions in the OP: + Show Spoiler [Build specifications] + What is your budget? Around 1000 euro's, although I would strongly prefer a bit cheaper (~800 maybe?) What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? I prefer to play ARPGs, but I would also like to play Overwatch,GTA, or Skyrim on high settings (not interested in ultra graphics; steady 60 fps is more important to me). What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Browsing, watching movies. Maybe some sound/video editing. Some programming as well. Do you intend to overclock? Yes! Part of this project is to gain some experience in overclocking and fine-tuning a computer. This is the first computer I will build myself. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No. Do you need an operating system? No. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. No. What country will you be buying your parts in? The Netherlands. If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. No preferences, although being in Europe I guess Newegg should be a good choice? I tried matching some parts on PCPartPicker, but I feel hopelessly inadequate. This is what I put together: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/n7XtJV I would love some feedback so I can get something going here

that's pretty good so far, should change RAM and PSU though. 3000mhz @c15 RAM is a good baseline to use (hardly more expensive than 2133 c15, much faster) though some people pay more for even faster, it gives more FPS in some games when not GPU-limited. It's good to get RAM that doesn't have plastic stuff sticking off the top of it because this has no real function aside from looking fancy and can actually block things like CPU coolers from fitting. You can get a PSU w/ 80+ efficiency and hopefully good quality as well. It's pretty hard to shop for PSU's and i don't know which retailers to use for the netherlands either~ The rx 480 just released, but only seems to be available on reference designs right now which are not so great. One comparable to the 970 that you have selected should be available for $50-70 cheaper quite soon, though AMD vs Nvidia GPU's have different features as well so this isn't 100% about framerate alone.

i don't need to get a cooler right? Pretty much every CPU that you'd use for a build like that comes with a stock cooler
