Hey guys, loving this thread and reading some of the information here for a total newbie about PC's :D

Soo i've got an usual question, i have 4 system and i need help chosing which to buy, they are all within 50 euro of each other.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?

Mainly care about sc2 here right now, and having good fps during Co op/ 2on2 and 3on3 games. (medium settings and 40+ fps would be nice)
I'd prefer it if PC is not too loud with the fans.

I would probably pick #2 because of the shiny newer technology, and ever slightly better performance based off hardware alone.

One question though, those 4 systems sound like some preconfigured deals you got from some shops? because neither those CPU need anything other than stock cooler, but since you want something quiet then yeah, aftermarket cooler will help tremendously, but I just dont know about how good the Deepcool is. Also, if possible to wait for a week for 3rd party benchmark of RX 480 comes out, that one might be a super good deal, but then again, if these are preconfigured builds and nothing can be changed, then oh well.

***** One last thing, please get an SSD. especially for new build. it's performance increase over HDD is huge, and since you are installing new OS anyway, it saves you the trouble of cloning the disk later on. like really, just get an SSD first, HDD can wait until you want extra disk space

Hi, thanks for the quick response, it is from a shop (homestory cup sponsor
However i am able to configurate almost freely which parts i want.
I could also get this same build without a GPU and then buy one later.(how much better would a RX480 be?Would i need a better PSU for that one?Seems like people arent sure about the price of it yet?

Changing HDD to a 240gb SDD would add 20 € thats not too bad, I'll read up a bit about SDD's some.

PS : i remember reading that Starcraft 2 is more reliant on a good CPU than a good GPU, so saving money on a budget midclass GPU seems like the smart decision here?

@Quateras: for SC2 performance, I would probably wait for Cyro to comment. But yeah good CPU + mid class GPU is a good budget combination. May be get 6600 instead of 6500 for that few % bump.

Anyway, RX 480, if going by AMD paper release, will be much better than GTX950 and should cost about the same. However it's not released yet, so you have to wait, not sure how long, can be 1-2 weeks, can be 1month for it to be widely available.

On the same note, PSU requirement for RX 480 will have to wait. Or anything related to RX 480 and you will have to wait for a month or so. GTX 950 can handle your requirement just fine actually, however may as well just wait a bit more for new technology, unless you really want some Nvidia specific features like shadowplay

I think #2 for sc2 and in general if you're buying a prebuilt

rx480 will be $200 for reference 4GB version, a bit more expensive for one with a custom cooler on it. That would help for other GPU demanding games but not for sc2 in those situations (which will still be quite heavily cpu bound in co-op, 2v2 etc.. especially if you're not on max settings)

SSD is pretty massive, not for FPS but for general system usability

There's no worry about using a half decent ~430w PSU for an rx 480. Power usage will be in the 100w range if AMD's marketing slides about polaris were correct and 125w range if they're not. OC could probably go a lot higher but nothing to threaten a PSU of that capacity.

Hey guys I need some advice. Someone in my family wants to support me and help me getting a new PC until Im fluent in money again. I´ve been told I should look on ebay and it has to be a pre-built one and the budget is 150€. So I´ve looked around and found this one:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/GAMER-PC-AMD-OFFICE-ATI-HD3000-4GB-DDR3-160GB-24x-DVDRW-Komplett-Computer-System-/151637810572?hash=item234e515d8c:g:YdwAAOSwPcVVpmMk

I know this is not much but it has to do for now. My only concern is that the pre installed Win 7 only runs for 30 days. What would a new OS (Win 7) cost? Also I would like to know if I can upgrade this rig somewhat over time. I just want to know that we don´t buy complete crap. If I can play Hearthstone at least and maybe some old games (Diablo 2, Quake 4 something like this) Im satisfied.

That's one of the weakest systems that you could buy 6 years ago and there are some concerns about the hardware (like PSU used, especially if it's that old) as well as the performance - might not even meet hearthstone listed requirements

Windows lisence costs around 100 euros

It having to be prebuilt just makes it nearly impossible to stay with 150€ and getting a PC out of it that can even launch kinda new games. You could do some okayish builds if not prebuild, but this way... If you can get that person to make it 200€ you could look at those with AMD A8 APUs,, they might not be good, but should be able to run at least something.

Hey guys, so i found a pre build on a local retailer which i ( with my very limited knowledge) think looks like a very good deal, i tried looking up all the parts for itself and always get at least 100€ higher than this one.

Price is 860€, which is pretty much the limit of my budget and i can´t change any parts in this build:

Gehäuse: MidiTower CoolTek CTC X5 Black Edition
Netzteil: 500 Watt Markennetzteil 80 Plus
Mainboard: ASUS H110M-A
CPU-Typ: Intel® Core i5-6600 4x 3300MHz Sockel 1151 Skylake
CPU-Takt: 3300MHz
Speicher: 16GB DDR4-RAM Kit (2x 8GB DDR4-2133)
Festplatte: 2TB S-ATA + 240GB SSD 2.5"
Laufwerk: CD/DVD-Rewriter S-ATA (DVD+/-R/RW, Dual Layer)
Grafikkarte: 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX960 Overclocked PCIe, DVI, HDMI, 3x Display Port
Sound: Realtek ALC887 7.1 Channel HD
Schnittstellen: 4x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.0, Gbit LAN, VGA, DVI, HDMI, 2x PS/2, Audio Line-In-/-Out/-Micro
Betriebssystem: Windows 10 Professional ESD

It says the win10 comes without disc, i won´t get any trouble if i want a fresh installation in the future, right?

i guess the bit german is understandable, right? =)
Here´s a link to the system too, but all german...

https://www.snogard.de/produkte/SNOGARD-GamingLine/SYSTEM-GL4676/GamingLine-i5-6600-SSD-GTX960.html

I would pretty much only use it for gaming, no streaming, no overclocking or anything.
I still mainly play SC2 and D3, but definitly wanted to play some more recent AAA titles like Witcher or whatever which my 2009 quad core 8300 with gtx 460 really can´t handle anymore. ^^

What do you guys think of this? Would i make a mistake buying this? Hope i gave enough infos for now, im a tech support virgin here. =)

Hello people,

I hope I am not too far off-topic here, but I am looking for some advice regarding my current computer, which is not performing as well as I would like/expect. Depending on your answers I have a follow-up question about possibly replacing it and buying a new rig.

So basically, some time ago, I had to buy a new laptop for use at my job. I am a data scientist and programmer, and as such I focused mainly on getting enough RAM (16Gb) and a quad-core processor (Intel Core i7-4712MQ CPU @ 2.30GHz). I figured I'd throw in a decent graphics card as well (GeForce GT 740M @ 2048MB) so I could use the rig for gaming as well.

Now, the laptop works fine for professional purposes. However, I cannot get a decent framerate in any game I play. I like to play ARPGs (Diablo3, Path of Exile) and also games like GTA5. Every game I have tried so far has been a disaster. I've had to turn down settings to the absolute minimum, and then I would still struggle to get a steady 30fps even after lowering the resolution below 1920x1080.

Do you guys have any clue as to why the performance is so poor? Is gaming on a laptop just a terrible idea? For reference, here is a Speccy screenshot of my system:

Now, if I can indeed not expect any proper gaming performance from my laptop, I am going to need your help once again. In that case, I am planning to build a proper gaming laptop with a budget of around 1,000 euro's. I will use the resources in the OP to propose a build. But maybe I could first get some input on my laptop situation

What were people expecting the RX 480 to be god, that price for performance is reasonable for the mid-tier consumers. Although it's basically a $50 cheaper version of the 970, seems like a fine deal for someone like still satisfied with the 760 Windforce.

It's what they said it would be VR entry level performance for ~$200

Um, aside from power. Wtf?

I didn't expect AMD to meet their power goals (Nvidia didn't come close to meeting theirs for the last 2 gens in a row either) but this is a lot worse than i expected

CPU is usable, graphics isn't. A 740m is just that bad unfortunately, could easily be 7-10x worse than a $200 desktop GPU today. It's very hard to game on a laptop without weight, noise and a lot of $$$

the RX 480 is a bit of a let down, imo

It's what they said it would be VR entry level performance for ~$200

Um, aside from power. Wtf?

I didn't expect AMD to meet their power goals (Nvidia didn't come close to meeting theirs for the last 2 gens in a row either) but this is a lot worse than i expected

completely underwhelming in the bigger picture but maybe enough "hype" to sell

I'm sure i saw marketting slides that efficiency was going to increase by 2.5x this gen and they needed that to level with Pascal.

By TPU's numbers, it increased ~64%, not ~150%. That's not even remotely close.. i'm worried for bigger GPU's now

pretty insane that the 10XX series are managing ~70% more perf/watt. optimistically drivers/14nm teething/board design issues are the cause. Pessimistically, 480 represents the best move AMD's got... which they desperately wanted to release 6-9 months ago, and casts a shadow on 4X0 and Vega.

nvidia seems pretty comfortable charging people a nice margin for their new stuff and they can just dump the 970/980s if they get nervous
