They are compatible but it requires a motherboard with ddr3 slots instead of ddr4 and you're kinda stuck with ~1.35v.
1.35v is low for ddr3 but high for ddr4.
PCpartpicker best ddr3 at 1.35v is around 2133c11 DDR4 entry level is ~3000c15 and best affordable at 1.35v is ~4000c19
RAM is quite easily sellable for a large % of the money that new RAM costs (it's generally reliable with very long warranties, compatible with a large amount of systems and gets sold/bought in high volumes) so it's strongly preferable to switch RAM than to buy into a mobo w/ last gen and slower RAM support IMO.

@SkrollK Thanks, I hadn't checked the upgrade kits. The price tag is pretty interesting indeed!
However, I decided that buying a 1155 mobo would be enough. It's the cheapest option, and I did check the compared performances with the 6600K and there isn't that big a difference.
However, doesn't newegg only ship to NA? I live in France and I can't find a decent ATX 1155 motherboard. The only models I find are mATX and pretty outdated too, with no USB 3.0 ports. Here's the only one I found that would fit : https://www.amazon.fr/ASRock-H61M-IDE-Express-Socket-LGA1155/dp/B00GZRTMJC/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1465140167&sr=1-5
The problem is that with my big Noctua NH U14S and a new graphics card, a mATX would be just enough. Before that, though, I have trouble finding a motherboard that isn't 7 years old.

CPU performance matters a lot for HOTS and the 6600 is ~8-9% faster than the 6500 First off, thank you for the input! The 6600 is about $50 more wherever I can find it. Is it really worth the $50? Do I need that extra 8-9% to be able to max out HotS? You don't "need" anything really but it's 8-9% more performance if you want to pay for that. The gtx1070 will be at very low load at any graphics settings in that game and you will be CPU limited - no CPU is really fast enough to run sc2/heroes amazingly so extra performance is usually welcome. It's worth noting that sc2 and heroes of the storm's engine has very inconsistent frametimes, so the FPS meter saying more than 60 doesn't mean that the game performance won't get any better because you have a 60hz screen. It'll look a lot better at "100fps" than "60fps" on a 60hz screen. Alright. The 6600 will definitely be taken under consideration, in addition to the H110/B150 mobos. Any recommendations on a PSU? How much wattage will be sufficient without having to spend too much?

With the GTX1070 comsuming very little amount of power, i'd say that 550W is clearly enough for the whole. Maybe even a little bit overshoot, a 450W could be sufficient. But I'm no expert, Cyro will tell you that better.
@Cyro : oook, didn't knew about that DDR3 part. Thanks for the detailed explanation

Looks alright but don't take my word for it :D
SSD would make a huge difference to load times and general system responsiveness

I second that, it's expensive but the investment is worth it. It makes a tremendous difference. Best is to have an HDD for storage and an SSD to run the main programs.
Also are you sure you need the DVD burner ?

I had to borrow an optical drive to do anything after setting up my system w/ skylake because the motherboard manufacturer assumed that everybody would either have an optical drive or be using windows 10. Specifically, the USB didn't work unless you had a driver so it couldn't be used to control a mouse or keyboard, install windows, put network drivers on the system etc. Software is really silly sometimes!

actually USB thumb drive works just fine for me, but only windows 8 or 10. I believe Skylake have issue with only windows 7 and before that only.

I'm just gonna use my current SSD with Windows 10 instead of buying a new one. I should have mentioned that earlier.
As for the optical drive, that's just me being old fashioned. I still have copies of Brood War, WC3, and Diablo 2 laying around from 10-15 years ago that I'd like to be able to install/play if I wanted to.
Thanks, everyone, for yall's advice!
EDIT: Not done yet, unfortunately. There's a deal at Microcenter for an i5-6600k for $200 so I might have to go for that since it's cheaper/better(?). If I just replace the mobo I chose earlier with this (ASRock Z170 Pro4), will everything still work together? And are there better mobos available that y'all might recommend

The 6600k doesn't come with a stock cooler so you would need to buy a low end cooler as well and it's practically the same as the 6600 (though it supports official overclocking, as well)

I already bought the 6600K. Good thing I have plenty of time before a 1070 is released. I'm assuming any ~$30 CPU fan should be sufficient for non-overclocked? Or even cheaper? I'm a cheap guy and don't know too much, so I'm always looking for recommendations. I don't plan on overclocking in the near future (what a waste, I know), but I might as well be prepared since I have a K processor. Certainly not looking into liquid cooling. I don't want a noisy fan though. I'll be researching in the mean time.

yeah, easily cooled CPU even at OC

Thanks again, everyone. Yall are the best. I tell everyone that they're the best, but yall are really the best. + Show Spoiler +I will continue telling other people that they are the best.

I haven't kept up with the mobile GPU scene at all; what's the bare minimum that will do playable 1080p (>40fps in 1v1 with a reasonable number of units) in Legacy of the Void on Low or Medium settings?
940M? R5 M330?
