You could make an argument for planned obsolescence in off-the-shelf prebuilts when they're not cooled properly, have bad mobo's and PSU's etc

Laptops are generally not built to last either, you need to find a specific model that is good

Improve - yes, longevity - no. Its in their best interest to these things brake down not last 20 years. Its called planned obsolescence. I dont know how prevalent it is in IT industry but id imagine not many people know the excact numbers except few key employees at involved companies. Try reading forums about x brand vs y brand. You will find tons of contradicting opinions which lasts longer simply b/c noone except very few people has statistically significant data to back up their claims and those who has them dont want to reveal these data for obvious reasons.

I would imagine that data storage is one of the few places you wouldn't see much in the way of planned obsolescence. Storage isn't something that needs to fail for someone to buy more, they just need to fill up the space. Eventually, everyone runs out of space.

BackBlaze has an ongoing study on drive life. This is the most recent update. This is the data overview.

EDIT: It's the updated version of the study linked to in the Superuser post that Craton provided in his last post.
In terms of determining best brand, I still don't think this really answers the question because the sample sizes just
aren't large enough for 50% of the brands that they use.

It seems that computer technology, in general, is one of the few places that we see actual improvements over planned obsolescence. The lifespan of computer hardware extends far beyond its period of usefulness. I wonder how many people replace their computers because of actual hardware failures, over the hardware's inability to meet modern software demands?

If planned obsolescence happens anywhere, it's in SW: instead of continuing to patch your OS, they make an entirely new one, for instance.

Can't agree more with that. Atm IT technologies don't need PO cause no one is keeping the hardware to it's full life extent, because obviously progress happens faster than the death of the component.

Interesting site. I wonder if there is any affiliation between BB and any of those brands. That comparision seagate vs hitachi o.0

Yup, i would like to see some stats about it as well. Its probably different for different brands (esp the likes of razer and seagate)

Id imagine it still exists in some areas like gamer peripherals aka more buttons, more flashy looks but def much less in gpu,cpu in which performance race are more important.

So Pascal and Polaris are coming in a few weeks/months, is this a major iteration or would you expect 2017 to offer a larger jump in performance? I just want to consider whats being offered in 2017 or maybe even 2018 before I jump on this

It's a major iteration. We'll potentially see some other offerings of this gen in Q3/Q4, which may or may not be worthwhile for you.

used most of your suggestions but reused my macho cpu cooler and used different ram cuz of availability.

now i need to get rid of my hdd's and use only ssds....would be a near silent system.

btw - i needed help from microsoft support - which was awesome - the key i got from the other rig with the link someone posted was not valid and windows automatically disabled my windows activation.

had to talk to the support and after ~1h of talking about random stuff he managed to do it with. was fun to see how he used my mouse etc and controlled my pc from his place. he reseted everything and i had to reactivate with a windows 7 key.

the key u get from the .vbs script one guy linked here is just a generic windows10 key that will not let you move from one rig to another

You're forgetting how many people (and I've known several now) that are replacing their computers over perceived hardware failures that are more likely software failures and in many cases may be just user failures.

I've gotten two computers now (somewhat older, of course) free of charge from people that had slagged them with malware and viruses.
Yes, I email sponsors... to thank them. Don't post drunk, kids. My king, what has become of you?

"It's slow" when talking about general OS stuff like boot time, opening a folder, web browsing etc is almost always just everything being ran from a poorly maintained hard drive with a few years of crap on it (sometimes a ton of malicious software too)

The kind of people that would know to defragment a primary drive HDD weekly are usually the type of people to be using SSD's for years already

Speaking about defragmenting a hard drive : Doing it weekly with the planned Windows defragmenting tool is enough, or are you guys doing smthg else/using some special soft ?

I usually just go manual depending on usage but HDD isn't my main drive. There are some tools like this - https://www.piriform.com/defraggler , not sure which ones are good.

(SSDs, by virtue of not using a spindle and seek mechanism, don't have fragmentation. Defragging causes a lot of extra wear on your drive, which already has a "limited" number of writes).

hey guys, we're a group of ex-progamers and actualy progamers looking to make little stream studio about sports

and it would be nice to hear few suggestions about PC build we should use to stream anything flawlessly, and should we take at least two PC's?

on the other hand I saw ppl streaming exclusivly only with monitors avaliable, so kinda not sure about such details

I built my first PC off the advice from this thread a couple years back and now I'm building one for my little brother. It's a very simple machine, I'm throwing my old 770 in there, but everything else I need fresh.

The only thing I'm missing is a motherboard here and I'm not sure what to go with. I'm hoping for something pretty cheap to keep the cost under 450 after tax so any recommendations would be welcomed.

You'll need ddr4 RAM (+ a ddr4 mobo) or low voltage ddr3 (1.35v) with a ddr3 mobo, 1.5v RAM isn't ok for Skylake.

DDR4 is probably best.

Look like close to 980 of last gen, pascal would probably be 1060
