you might want 750w PSU for that purpose with everything OC'd

6700k without delid will be heat limited so if you care about the margins from hyperthreading, you likely care about having a better cooler to oc higher

@cyro: thanks, you are helpful as always. My friend doesnt really want to OC, but all the non OC board available here does not support SLI (xfire only for some reason). So with 6700k may as well push it slightly. As for 750W PSU, thanks. I will take that into consideration. Only checked pcpartpicker for SLI 970. Totally forgot about 980ti or xfire amd

Decided I should post for some advice. Basically, my goal is a budget gaming build. This is what I got currently:

The Build

So far as I'm aware, both the CPU and graphics cards are decent picks. Unfortunately, I have no idea if the motherboard or case are any good, or if there's anything I need to look for in regards to monitors. I'm also not sure if an SSD is worth getting, since I have no experience with them. The power supply is 500W, but that should be fine for this build, right?

CPU : Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Graphics: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Case: Enermax OSTROG ATX Mid Tower Case
Monitor: BenQ GW2255 60Hz 21.5" Monitor

It comes out to under $1000 CAD, which is about what my goal is. I'd like to be able to play Witcher 3 on medium at least (though I'm pretty sure this build so far can do it on high).

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Your case is ATX and mobo is mATX. Though it will fit, you can get a smaller, more compact case with an mATX board or get a full ATX board and retain the case. H81m-P33 does not have front usb3 header, if you have front panel usb3 ports on your case they would be non functional. If you care about that, you can get a cheaper case without front panel usb3's or a better mobo with headers.

If you are not planning to have multiple 3.5''' drives etc. I'd recommend a mATX micro tower case. It won't be as bulky and will save space in your room. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/parts/case/#t=6&u=1 If you don't care about case size get a full atx H97 board for for more ports (pci & usb & sata). You can even go itx like thermaltake core v1 + msi H81i board.

And, ssd matters. Get a small 128gb one and install OS on it. General snappiness of PC would be night and day compared to regular HDD.

Actually I think 650W will be enough. He will at most SLI 970 or run single 980Ti. unless next gen nvidia card consume tons of power

650w is fine for SLI midrange GPU or a single high end GPU, it's just not great for OC's CPU and two high end OC'd GPU's.

You can easily have 300w per GPU with big chips like gk110, gm200, hawaii, fiji etc and the CPU itself will need like 100-150 watts, plus a bit more (very small but not entirely negligable) for everything that uses small amounts of power like hdd/ssd and case fans. Conservatively clocked they'll use more like 250w each, but that's still close to maxing a 650w PSU if you load two and have OC'd CPU as well.

970 is 13 smm, 224 bit memory enabled chip while 980ti is 22smm, 384 bit - they're not comparable in performance and power. And a single 980ti would be preferable to two 970's.

So, SLI is only practical when you SLI'ing top performance card of current market or you have an old card and can get a second one for very cheap.

Pretty much, sli970 would give a bit more FPS than single 980ti but need to be supported well and have a significantly higher latency than single GPU

What do you generally think of itx cases for users that don't OC and use only couple drives and single GPU? Is there a downside besides a little bit more difficult installation than a standard tower case?

@cyro: I kind of did consider the power consumption when going full OC, but my friend being conservative doesnt want much OC to be done on his system. Also, a single 980Ti will probably break his budget already ^^

If GTX 980 Ti has this problem, imagine customers' faces. :D

GTX 970 may be the unluckiest card. 3.5 GB memory and async compute problem?

It'd be a serious performance deficit in some situations if it didn't really work at all (testing is ongoing and vague, nvidia have not said anything) but you still have to consider that GCN is coming on four years old the first time anybody noticed it in a gaming title

in fact we put up with so much crap from dx9-dx11 and multi-gpu for years, but an actual FPS number will turn peoples heads. I don't personally think it'll really affect me in Nitrous games - if they don't run well enough while being GPU bound i'l just turn down settings or buy a better GPU - but a lot of people care about it.

It's nvidia so my guess is it can be fixed with a ~£350 upgrade once Pascal releases next year and all their current cards inexplicably go EOL.

That's the problem with monopoly. NVIDIA thought they were too good, so they made GTX 970 and this async compute shit. That's why I hope AMD catches up a little bit, so NVIDIA is more honest, including their prices. I haven't owned a personal AMD product but I don't like 400+ GBP GPUs even though I paid quite a lot for GTX 980 because 970 is lol. :D

GPU's have always been that expensive for the highest end, only difference now is nvidia is launching a midrange die as the "680" or "980" and charging £1k for their high end until AMD catches up that gen.

And the 970/980 release started a market share landslide that halved AMD discrete GPU market share in a year
