AMD is pretty quick to talk shit
There was a guy offering cheap "upgrades" to 290's after the 4GB VRAM drama. It took like a week and the offer was like 4% money off only one 290 model - the xfx 290, which i did not want to buy because it has serious VRM cooling problems that can result in throttling at stock speeds.

Yeah well, one would assume AMD are getting quite desperate at this point so it's not terribly surprising that they jump on these things. With how Intel and Nvidia pretty much dominating the enthusiast market..

So, the fan I added to the floor of my case basically completely solved my cooling problem, but I managed to get even lower temperatures both at idle and under load by adding a fan to my bedroom. Basically, my bedroom has a door and two windows, and it's usually warmer inside than out, even with the windows open at night. So what I did was got a 20" box fan and put it in one window (wedged between the window and the sill) set up as an intake fan. It sucks air in which passes through my computer and is exhausted out the fanless window. My room is noticeably cooler, going from "muggy at times" when the computer is under load to "slightly chilly". Even better, I've got great temps now. I used the fan as an intake instead of exhaust to keep up positive pressure in room kekeke
seriously though it made a bigger difference than I would have thought. Has anyone else found that keeping the room cool helps?

I'm quite lucky in that my apartment is cool in the summers, it's a problem in the winter though I have to add extra radiators to keep warm.. But yeah, my computer ran considerably hotter at my old place where the summers were really bad, obviously ambient temperatures changes a lot. If they didn't then there would be no need for fans in a closed case and wouldn't that be the dream.

No, because sunny summer > no fans in case any day.

I'm just saying if ambient temperatures didn't affect anything in the computer then it could be as sunny as you want and you wouldn't need fans to cool anything. So sunny summers+nofans > sunny summers+fans.

Ambient temps is a big deal. It's nice being acclimated to scotland because the only time my room gets hotter than 15-17c is during the hot times of the summer, so realistically under 5% of the time every year as it's only certain times of one season during the day (not night).
My friend lives in austria at the moment and for much of this summer, his ambients were literally 20c higher than mine. His case cooling was also worse, so his components were flat out ~25-30c hotter than mine.
You can expect 1c cooler room = 1c cooler hardware, but in extremes (such as a 20c difference) it can actually be amplified a little more.

Fans would still be neccesary. If you kept your stuff in a sealed box, the heat wouldn't leave very quickly and the air in the box would heat to +10, +20, +30c over ambient. The main difference is, if your ambient is 15c then that'd be 45c air, while if your ambient is 30c then it'd be ~60c air in the case.

If ambient temperatures didn't matter then it wouldn't make any difference how much hotter it got period. I'm not sure why it's being argued, read the reply again.

Oh i partially misread
Yeah, ambient temp does matter. Especially if you make significant changes to it.
At one point with improving case airflow, you're deciding if you want say +6c or +12c over room temp (in some cases, even +20c or more with bad airflow and high powered components). Simply lowering your room temp by 6c would have the same effect without the added noise.

Sadly, my box fan makes significantly more noise than my computer fans, cause it's a cheap box fan. That being said, I don't really care since none of it is audible over my game sounds anyways. The computer fan I added to my thor V2 (Prolimatech 140mm Blue Vortex (link)) is quiet, like the stock Thor V2 fans. In general I guess I'm not getting the super high end high power fans so the box fan seems louder

It can still be more worth it to cool down your room rather than fighting an uphill battle to keep your case temperature as close to room temperature as possible, as you've probably seen :D

Any thoughts on HyperX Cloud 2 headphones? I'm looking for headphones with a microphone for PC. These are a bit more expensive for my taste, but if they are stable for the next 2-3 years, then that may be ok. It's just gaming and music that I'm interested in, I was never a fan of bass and shit like that.

As far as gaming headsets go, they're pretty decent in sound quality, seeing how they're a rebranded takstar pro 80, with a mic attached. I would still recommend an actual pair of headphones and a cheap mic that you can buy separate, but that all depends on your budget.

You'll probably not find a good set of headphones and separate mic that's better for under $100.. Also hard to find a better headset for the same price so you should be good with those darkness, as Thryd says far as gaming headsets go they're among the better ones.

I think a simple GPU upgrade may bring much performance to your old build. Other parts are not that outdated to run those games you asked.
Thanks for the response! Any recommendations on a GPU upgrade that fits my other parts?
My first thought was to get this one: MSI GeForce GTX 960
|
It's a good pick for your listed games. 970 is one step up and 950 is one step down. Choose based on your budget
970 would be able to handle more resource hungry games with better settings, for more years. 950 would still be able to run your games ok while being a lil cheaper and weaker than 960. Assuming 1080p at most.
But I'm not really sure about 960 or 950 is that much faster than your old gtx 570 to warrant an upgrade.

Seems reasonable, thank you!
So I'll think about getting a 970 or delaying my purchase for another 6 months or so
|
upcoming 6 months shouldn't bring much difference to what's on the market today, amd's and nvidia's new cards came out just recently (but im not really knowledgeable about market things someone correct me if im wrong). So there's not a big reason to wait for 6 months if you have the moneyzz for 970

950 and 960 are the same GPU (950 is cheaper but partially disabled)
970/980 is the next upgrade after that - they're the same GPU as eachother, but this time it's the one above the 950/960 (~1.65 - 2x faster vs 960)
980ti/Titan X are the high end 570/580 equivelant GPU's, but 980ti would be the one to buy for almost all gamers in the position to buy them.
Over the last few generations, nvidia has been changing their naming scheme so x80 (like 680, 980 etc) is not the best GPU any more, often not even close. It's midrange - upper midrange now but not flagship tier. Part of that is deceptive marketing that both GPU vendors are doing a lot of these days in an effort to sell more stuff.

Alright, 2nd PC for 2nd friend on the way. This time I kind of know what is what, but still need some final pieces of advices.
Basically this build is mainly for Linux, VR (oculus rift),programming, running VMs. A quirky requirement is that my friend going for sort of white/red/orange theme build, but he cant wait for the Gigabyte SOC Force mobo. and other gaming series mobo (red color) are a little bit expensive. Also the case is a toss up between Fractal R5 and H440, both white. I wonder if Hyper 212 evo has enough RAM clearance for Corsair/G.skill ripjaws V??
He will definitely play some games like Witcher 3 down the road, but not now, so I omit the GPU. 650W is to future-proof SLI needs, but I am not sure about this, especially VR system requirements is not all set. SSD is a future upgrade.
Other than that, I know this is just another super standard skylake build, but I am still looking for some fine-tuning or recommendations. Thanks a lot
