http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Gc4yzy Would a Noctua NH-U12S also be good enough for light overclocking, instead of the NH-U14S?

Yes. The U14S is better, but the U12S is still a great HSF and will easily meet anyone's needs for light overclocking.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-guide-with-statistics/ 18 thousand comments there, if there is unanswered stuff in the guide itself and spoilers/dropdowns (which most people don't read) then you can probably find more stuff in the last few hundred comments or ask That's for Haswell (4670k, 4690k, 4770k, 4790k), the Skylake (6600k, 6700k) equivelant thread is here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1570313/skylake-overclocking-guide-with-statistics-wip/ though it's very much a work in progress there is some info and discussion

I have read that 4.3 is a pretty easy target to reach for almost everyone.

If a cpu's turbo frequency is 3.8 and you overclock it to 4.2, how often does it hit 4.2 while working? Is overclocking only increasing turbo ceiling? With OC, you're typically setting it to work at that speed all the time. Technically what you're doing usually is setting the turbo mulitiplier for a 1, 2, 3 or 4 core (for example on quad core CPU) to be 4.2ghz. On a 4670k, the turbo speed is 3.6ghz on 1 core, 3.7ghz on 2 cores and 3.6ghz on 3 and 4 cores, so it's being raised from that to 4.2ghz for all of them. It's still a turbo speed so it's not used at idle - but it's used whenever beneficial, your CPU would just sit at a number of power states between 800mhz and 4.2ghz unless set to stick at 4.2ghz all the time (speedstep disabled) you're also overriding the power limits etc that would make it throttle down to base clock, though they don't come into play much for almost all of intel CPU's (exception probably 4790k and 6700k) unless the iGPU is being used for graphics

I'm not seeing any LGA 1151 Mini ITX motherboards so it looks like Skylake isn't an option. As with my earlier post, my budget is $1,400 +/- $50. Original post: + Show Spoiler + On August 19 2015 12:57 Jayde wrote: Hello there, looking for some help on a build. What is your budget? 1300-1400 USD What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Modern AAA titles on highest settings (other than anti-aliasing maybe?) What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Nothing heavy (no editing/rendering). Internet browsing. Do you intend to overclock? No Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No Do you need an operating system? Yes, likely Windows 10. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Yes to a monitor. I like 1920x1200 like this Dell UltraSharp, but it seems pricy, so I'm open to something cheaper and maybe 1920x1080. ASUS has some more inexpensive ones. Any brand/model suggestions here are appreciated. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. I'll need a wifi card and optical drive. Are there any problems with this basic ASUS 24x DVD Burner and TP-LINK PCI-E Wireless Adapter? What country will you be buying your parts in? United States. If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. I've ordered before from newegg and have been happy, but other places are fine too. Build comments: CPU: thinking skylake i5 since only $250 CPU Cooler: No overclocking so thinking 212 evo GPU: GTX 980 Ti won't fit on this budget. Think 970 is sufficient or should I go for 980? Case: Likely the Corsair Carbide 200R Motherboard: looking for help--too many new/unreviewed ones by different manufacturers PSU: also looking for help--550 ok? RAM: also looking for help, should I be looking for high frequency with skylake/Z170? If so, how high? HDD/SSD: On this budget do you recommend an SSD/HDD split or just an HDD? A 128 or even 250 SSD alone would fill up pretty fast from ~20 GB titles. I'm leaning towards just an HDD. Much appreciate your input! Working off what @Incognoto suggested here is my updated build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vcMvyc Any problems? Unlike my original post--I'd like to overclock some if possible. PSU max depth is 160mm so I had to go with the GS version of the EVGA Supernova 650. CPU cooler max height is 150mm so that is a problem. Cryorig H7 enough? I picked that one because it is short enough and doesn't look like it will interfere with the RAM. Noctua has a 92mm fan that is smaller and a good bit more expensive; is that an improvement? My other question is case fans. The case actually comes with one 140mm in the front and a 120mm in the back. I assume I should replace these with 2 120mm up front and 1 in the back? Overall, with this type of a case can I even expect to overclock?

Have you considered the Bitfenix Prodigy case? It's not as small as some mITX cases but it has generous clearance for CPU coolers like a taller Noctua and should fit any sized GPU. I am a bit biased towards its design as well. If not you could also give the Noctua NH-D9L a look, I'm using it for my 6700k and it's cooling it better than I had anticipated (53degrees load) but haswell runs hotter, that said it's built for smaller cases like yours and it's short enough to work no problem. If not then you might want to check and see if a smaller closed-loop water cooler like the H60 would fit like mantequilla said. They're decent enough if you're not looking to overclock much.

This should give you an idea of what can be fit in your case: + Show Spoiler + For the power supply, I recommend ditching the EVGA GS and getting the Cooler Master V550. It is quieter, also compact, and it's much better in terms of performance (ripple suppression for clean power which is healthy for you hardware, voltage regulation which helps with overclocking a bit, efficiency for heat). It's not modular unfortunately, but semi-modular. + Show Spoiler + http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=383 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171092&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker, LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= http://www.overclock.net/t/1415919/cooler-master-power-supplies-information-thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1395708/evga-power-supplies-information-thread For the rest of your build, looks solid enough.

Edit: Does anyone know of a good target temperature for a 24/7 skylake overclock? I'm unsure of the limits of these new processors, I haven't overclocked since my old first generation i5, the 760..

![]() What is your budget? about 1200 EUR (can go to about 1500 if there is a noticable speed bump) What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Modern AAA titles on high/highest settings What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? i would like to stream Do you intend to overclock? yes (moderate OC for daily use, but probably not immediatly) Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? no Do you need an operating system? yes, Win10 Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? no If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. i favor nvidia for gpu What country will you be buying your parts in? germany If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. none, however if there is a retailer that also builds the pc and does the cable managment for a reasonable fee that would be great (i can build on my own, im just lazy :p, ind my wiring tends to get messy) some thoughts on my end: CPU: skylake, im unsure if i5 or i7. I guess 8 core consoles means multicore support will be more important in the future? I7 would not fit in my 1200 EUR budget, but as i said, im flexible if the gains are worth it. CPU Cooler: I have no idea ... in my old E6750 rig (yes it lasted till this day!)i had a a huge cooler from Zalman, it was quiet even after OCing, i would like something like that again GPU: I think a 980 is a good buy, but i have no idea which one. The Palit GeForce GTX 980 Super JetStream was recommended on a german hardware page because it combines a good price tag, good speed and cooling. Oh and i hate coil whine, so i would like a card that doesnt have that. Case: No idea, my old cases always were quite cheap, but i would like to change that. So a reasonable priced case with good quality/cooling and maybe noise dampening would be nice Motherboard: I always had gigabyte boards and i was quite happy with them (except for the one time i needed easy tune and it almost killed my OS). I only need a basic motherboard that supports OCing and lets me control the fan speeds. No fancy extras needed. RAM: I read that ddr4 3000 is at a pretty good price point right now. HDD/SSD: 256 or 512 gb SSD and a standard HDD Thank you for your help ![]()
