Easiest way is for you just to post pictures of the internals so we can check how things are connected.

She is extremely sensitive to the aesthetic and I think a small, nonblack case is important to her. I'm thinking micro itx or something similar. "I want to be able to hide the tower" she just said. Her desk is fairly tiny, it would be hard. she's quite partial to: "Lian-Li PC-TU100A Mini ITX Tower Case" because it looks like a lunch box a bit. edit: added monitor to budget, adjusted budget. What is your budget? Ideally <= $800, including select warranties (mobo) and monitor. Could go up to $1000 with warranties, but that means her tablet gets worse, so gotta be worth it, since both combined need to come in under $1200ish. CDN I think $800 might be overkill, she's not really a gamer, just wants to play some games including team games with me. What is your monitor's native resolution? No monitor yet. Might get a used one. Maybe a touch screen. It must be slick, aesthetics matter to her! What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? She wants to play some simulation games - maybe cities skylines/tropico/Sims etc. Also, her and I would like to play some team games together - probably dota/lol/heroes. I think 30fps as the very bottom is acceptable (ie, doesn't go beneath 30 ever), but it would be a lot nicer if she could get 60 of course. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Internet/movies. Nothing special. She will get a tablet for portable movies/internet actually. Do you intend to overclock? I don't think overclocking is ideal for her, she's never owned a desktop before. The room tends to collect a lot of pet hair too, so I'm worried it'll add heat to the machine- also, might go with very small case for aesthetics, does that matter? I'm curious what you all think. The g5238 might be a good call if it's safe for her to do. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No. Do you need an operating system? I guess we do, don't we? Forgot about that. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? yes, monitor is part of the budget. Touch screen appeals to her a lot, and she doesn't like black. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. no. What country will you be buying your parts in? Canada. If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Memory Express is best for anything that is worth getting a warranty for, since I can get IPR and make returns very easily that way.

You can just add a case or monitor of your choice.

Man I wish I lived in the states sometimes. At least when it comes time to buy computer hardware ![]() Downgrading from that build in various places... what about the r7 260x? How does it compare to the 750ti? Here's what I have, roughly - can you comment/critique? Some of these are slightly cheaper options than you suggested, but I don't know what tradeoffs that involves. I only refrained from picking AMD cause i thought it would be more expensive in places outside of the US as it normally is for some odd reason. I guess its the same price in canada. Anyways, I3 and I5 shouldn't give too much of a difference based on what your gf needs to do so it's a perfectly fine downgrade. A bit slower but doesn't look like she would absolutely need the extra speed anyways. Anyways, the build looks fine except you'll probably need the smaller ssd and 1tb hdd. I assume that she hasmovies and shows and such so the 1tb should be good to hold all of her media files.

Near stock you'd see power figures like 240-280w per card under load. Hmm, I'll wait a year then.

You also have the chance to pick better components such as GPU.

All that happens when I press power is that the system fan and its LED comes on for about half a second, then the CPU fan turns slightly, then everything shuts off

A new power supply fixed the issues, although in my case the old one was more than 10 years old.

At the very least, though, it can be returned if that's the case.
