My goals are to have a better machine to work and play some old games, the only recent ones are Heroes of the Storm and hopefully Legacy of the Void. Currently i'm playing on a i3 laptop with onboard intel graphics and 4 GB RAM , i'm able to play heroes of the storm with minor lag if i close the majority of the programs.
What's your budget? Do you need a screen, keyboard, mouse? Will the computer be used for other things? Do you already have a windows license or do you need one?
EDIT: actually just answer the questionnaire in the OP and you'll be good to go

Thank you very much. Will try to look around for those to see if the price are reasonable, else I guess back to Hyper 212X push/pull 2 fans or Noctua NH-D14/D15

Hey guys! You were a great deal of help last time, and this time I need a bit of help with a specific project computer. It's meant for animation rendering for an undergrad specializing in this at uni. As far as i can tell, the four most important components are the CPU, graphics card, storage and monitor.
Background:
He put together the following two builds:

There's been no feedback. Is it because it's unclear in its preesentation? Or it's roughly ok? Or it's completely outlandishly bad?

Pricing aside, setup #1 doesn't look that bad
it's very hard for a few things, it's a strange country with new websites to look at (vs standard UK, US stuff etc) so no familiarity, some stuff not in english and prices between parts not necessarily even similar to other regions. Also not so sure on parts to recommend - do you know what software would be used for the animation stuff, in particular? If the GPU is for gaming, do you know resolution/FPS/settings target, or are you just looking for the best within a certain budget there?
regardless of other stuff, it's better to get 2 sticks of RAM (not just 1), so 2x4GB if you want 8GB. 1600c11 is quite slow, it's better to get 1600c9 but that's not nearly as big of a difference as not having dual channel

With a 1500€ budget you can't go much wrong I guess. That will will be enough for a very good CPU and GPU (K series i7 + GTX 960/970 + a good monitor). Problem arises when you are on a tight budget.

Hello, 4 years ago I posted in the predecessor to this thread. I bought my pc in 2007, with a lower end gfx card because I was catching up with old games at the time, and the plan was to upgrade the graphics card down the line. I ended up playing broodwar and other lower resource games alot more than I expected though and never got around to buying a better card. Well, a few days ago my gpu gave up the ghost so now seems like a good time to buy! The card I remember wanting to buy was the nvidia 8800 GT as it was the best bang for the buck. This got superseded by the GTX 460 1gb, and now it is the GTX 970 ( 960 is attractive too).
However, my budget is not really high enough at the moment to allow me to buy the sweet spot card. That said, they would be overkill for me anyway as I will be playing old games, pre 2007 at quite low resolutions, 1080p is ok. I would preferably like to buy from scan.co.uk and nvidia. The absolute cheapest/oldest card on offer is the 610 and it is £30.
A card that caught my eye is the gt 730, its the 2gb 128bit version. Cost £49 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-msi-gt-730-40nm-1600mhz-gddr3-gpu-700mhz-384-cores-vga-dvi-hdmi
My specs: mobo: nForce 650i (C55) chip: Core 2 quad Q6600 2.4ghz 8mb mem: 4gb ddr2 667mhz (4x1gb samsung) gfx: 8600gt 256mb psu: xfx pro 450w
Problems: My motherboard has 1 PCIe x16 slot. Newer graphics cards are all pcie 2.0 or 3.0 and I cant work out/confirm if this means the new cards are compatible or not. I have a feeling that they WILL work, but not at full speed. I dont mind about the full speed as I am playing old games.
I just need something that will definitely work with my motherboard. Right now I am using a very old spare graphics card, and I had to take out my sound card to free up a slot for it. So yeah I have no sound for now TT Looking forward to hearing from you guys before I purchase.

The monitors on both aren't great, and the case and power supply on the second look bad.
I would go cheaper on the graphics card. The pros use workstation graphics cards for these anyway; having more shaders in a consumer-grade card (i.e. a higher-end model) frequently isn't going to help that much.
Looks like he's not going for CPU overclocking either, so I would also consider getting a Haswell Xeon instead, e.g. the E3-1230V3, and hunting for a consumer-grade socket 1150 motherboard (with normal non-ECC DDR3 RAM) that claims to support it: http://faun.ee/cpuxup-33008m-s1150-boxe3-1230v3-bx80646e31230v3

You should check on that, particularly if a firmware update might be needed. Nominally you're supposed to get forwards and backwards compatibility, just at reduced communications rates, which won't matter for a low-end card.
If it will work, that GT 730 looks reasonable.
edit: derp double post. at least it was a separate reply

Thanks guys.
He said he's currently using 3ds max and adobe after effects.
Overclocking is a possibility (although he's got no experience with this).
Which graphics card would you recommend?
|
He'd need a better heatsink and a more expensive motherboard for overclocking. I would take the price savings via the Xeon instead and get virtually the same thing for cheaper.
GPU depends on exact usage in these programs. A lot of tasks are not GPU accelerated.
I don't know how old this info is (and if say GTX 960 is supported or not), but for at least the ray-traced 3D renderer, here's a list of cards with CUDA support in After Effects, for example: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/system-requirements.html
It could be safer going with the GTX 760, even though the GTX 960 is newer, faster, and more efficient, without being more expensive. Then again, future updates can bring things in line, and some features may or may not even be used anyway. A GTX 770 seems like a real waste, though. The graphics card tends to be more for real-time rendering for viewing and not really helping compute for the actual output, if my understanding is correct.

You should get the 750 IMO.
The 730 has 64 bit memory bus with gddr5 or 128 bit with ddr3 (slower than the gddr5 option). The 750 has 128 bit gddr5.
750 has not that many more cores - but the 750 is Maxwell (newer arch) while the 730 is kepler. Functionally, it's probably around twice as fast on the core side and it has twice the memory bandwidth as well. It's also what i'd usually recommend as among the weakest thing to get for a gaming card, even for lower demand stuff.
info from memory and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units#GeForce_700_Series
price is higher than i remembered tho :/
ACTUALLY that's a fermi 730. Wtf. It's so confusing looking across three hardware generations, i don't even know how it would perform vs the kepler one etc. I would look into this more but i needed to run already several minutes ago xd have fun

GTX 750 is quite a bit more expensive.
Also, I thought the 384 CUDA core GT 730 should be Kepler. The 96 core version is Fermi.
I looked through the alternatives and pricing (I haven't checked for low-end cards in a long while) and concluded that GT 730 was fine. The similarly priced R7 240 is slightly worse. Then again, maybe I missed something.

or get something used off of ebay
i got a gtx 560 ti (with accelero cooler) for €62
i'm still waiting for it to come though

There should be all kinds of used 7970s around from that bitcoin craze if the PSU can handle it

Plus I just saw that NVidia is now bundling Witcher 3 with the GTX 960! I'll actually have a game (and a free one too) that can make use of the i5. I also found that my original mobo (MSI H81M P32) only had PCIe2.0... will go with the ASRock H97 Anniversary mobo instead You can pricematch at NCIX. PCIe 3.0 doesn't do anything for you unless you are running multiple cards. Thanks! Pricematching is exactly what I did with NCIX. Still went with a different mobo though cause I do plan to keep this PC for a decent amount of time and this gives me extra RAM slots.
