Your BIOS is now perhaps configured differently? Before you refreshed it, you might have changed something about the CPU fan profile, and now it's back to defaults.

Change the fan speed settings in the bios.

2700rpm...
I went paranoid at 1800rpm. Bios -> H/W Monitor -> CPU Fan 1 Settings. "disabled" or "Full on" means 100%.

Maybe his CPU Fan connected directly to PSU.

Hi all,

I've built my new machine with the following specs:

Asus H81M-E M-ATX Motherboard (Apparently compatible with 4th gen intel cores)
Hyper X 2x4GB 1877mhz RAM (Checked and it's on the above boards QVL)
Crucial MX100 512GB SSD
Intel 4570 3.2GHz processer
Corsair 80+ Bronze 500W CPU
LG DVD drive

I'm using my old GeForce 9800GT card for graphics until I feel the need to upgrade it, as I found it was performing well for it's age in any game I needed, the processor was really the problem with my old machine and it was an old 775 socket intel.

The computer boots to BIOS (well it's UEFI) fine and I can change whatever settings I need.

I've got a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 Professional SP1 on a disc and on a flash drive (verified that it installs on other machines), though when I boot either the DVD drive or the flash drive it says "Windows is loading files", then quickly shows "Starting windows" and suddenly it all goes black and nothing happens while the computer is still powered on (Fans are running etc). I thought it might be the RAM or the SSD so I've tried separate RAM (which didnt work) and a HDD with a copy of Windows installed from another PC that fails to run and continuously goes into the startup repair of windows when plugged into my new build (so again failing to work). It's very hard to find info about the black screen I'm experiencing but the only thing I've narrowed it down to is the BIOS version. My version is 0808 and apparently the newest version is 2105, with 2101 being the update that allowed 4th gen intel processors to work.

The problem is, http://www.asus.com/microsite/2014/MB/New_4th_gen_Intel_processor_compatibility/#models tells me that my board (H81M-E) doesn't support USB flashback to update the firmware, and the only way to update it will be with a windows tool. I have no access to other 1150 intel processors and I was wondering would anyone have any troubleshooting tips or advice on what I should do next. I'd really appreciate help with this!

Edit: I've just seen this - http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/271a81/psa_stop_combining_intel_8_series_with_the_new/ which warns against combining the haswell with these 8 series ASUS boards. It mentions the 4570S but not the 4570 but I've a feeling my only option will be to put an ivybridge or some older gen proc to update the firmware before I can use my processor. Does that sound like the best option?

Core i5-4570 was a launch CPU for Haswell, arriving Q2 2013 with the first socket 1150 motherboards. Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge are socket 1155, which isn't compatible. Even the oldest socket 1150 boards should support the first wave of Haswell processors because if they didn't, they wouldn't support any CPUs at all.

The H81M-E lists support for the i5-4570 from BIOS version 0211:

Hi Myrmidon,

Thanks for the reply! So you don't think the BIOS version is the problem? If so do you have any diagnostic tips or ideas on things to try?

Do the following:

(1) remove the 9800 GT
(2) install Windows while using the integrated graphics of the CPU+board
(3) put the 9800 GT back in and see if Windows still works

If (3) does not work, there's a setting in the BIOS where you can explicitly enable the integrated graphics. Normally, integrated graphics get disabled if a graphics card is installed. Through that BIOS setting, you could use the Windows desktop on integrated graphics while also having the 9800 GTX in the PC, then see if you can install the NVIDIA drivers for the 9800 GT that way.

Also, make sure to boot the USB flash drive in "UEFI" mode when installing Windows.

EDIT: Now that I think about it... You could just explicitly enable integrated graphics in the BIOS in the first place, never remove the 9800 GT. There is a second setting where you can set what the BIOS should see as "first". Set it so integrated is first, save and restart, then plug the monitor into the motherboard. That way you can install Windows using integrated graphics while still keeping the 9800 GT in the PC.

thx guys. Must have changed that setting way before I install the second heatsink, the stock fan is also crazily loud.

I ran Bonic heavily for the past few days, wonder if it's ok to leave the rig fully loaded 24/7, with CPU and GPU both close to 100%. Oh and the rig spec: i5 4670 and GTX750TI, the temp is 65C and 45C load respectively. Should i tune down a little bit?

It's ok, but wear on the CPU is directly correlated to amount of time at load and pinning all cores at 100% 24/7 is an easy way to wear the CPU 10x faster than just using it for web browsing, running games for say 4 hours a day which don't heavily load all of your cores etc. Higher temps accelerate that too so it'd be bad to minimize stock cooler fan speed and leave it running at 90c for years while at load like that.

Stock voltages and speeds are very conservative so it's not really a concern, but it's worth being aware of

Cool, I think I will pay more attention to it, and maybe clean the dust more often.
Well i forgot to mention the gpu is oc'ed a little bit. It's a cool card anyway, guess it will be fine.

Microsoft released a demo (technical preview?) for Windows 10. Yeah, they skipped Windows 9, which I feel is a shame since W9 had a nice ring to it. Whatever. I shamelessly stole this link for ocnet:

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/191295-how-to-download-and-install-the-windows-10-technical-preview

I've set up another partition in my HDD and I'm going to install W10 on it. :D

I thought W8 was faster and better than W7 under the hood. W10 should be even more so. I'm still running W7 but I think it's time to upgrade soon.

What particular reason do you have to dislike W8? I'm always curious to hear about this since I've never managed to quite pin-point why some people dislike it. I have never used W8 myself, you see.

Modern UI is the likely suspect.

8.1 should have helped with this since you can boot straight to desktop.

That, and things like Classic Shell, make me doubt it's just a UI issue. I could be wrong, of course.

Trying to get W10 on my PC, not quite done yet. >: (

E: I can't install W10 because my HDD is a MBR disk right now. Unfortunate. I can't convert it into a GPT disk right now since that means that apparently means erasing all the data on my disk (e.g. my current install of windows). I can't convert only partitions. So I'm cornered until I get another storage device.

gg (unless ofc someone else has a suggestion to convert a disk without data loss)

Thank you so much. Basically in the BIOS settings there was a deep dark PCI settings inside a folder inside a folder where there was a weird setting set to none. I changed this to "Auto" and it worked first time. Thank you very much for your help I really appreciate the helpers in the thread!

Now to install my Blizz games! :D

Windows 8 doesn't let you disable vsynced mouse cursor on the desktop or with any game unless you're playing it in exclusive fullscreen mode (w7 allows you to disable that) and forces you to do a few fixes to stop stupid issues like mice running at 125hz instead of 1000hz on desktop

The free version of a tool named "MiniTool Partition Wizard" can do it. There are also more of those kind of tools.

I once destroyed a partition table with one of those by switching back and forth between MBR and GPT for some experiments so there's a risk.

Microsoft fixed that mouse poll rate issue completely with a patch for 8.1 so that's gone. The VSync problem is still there of course.

Without having to manually apply it to explorer.exe etc? If so, that's nice
