If you want to know what to be paranoid about, I feel the most scary thing is that CPU socket on Intel. Those bastards don't want anything to do with RMAs on their CPUs, so they ditched the pins on the CPU itself. They forced the pin issue onto the board manufacturers instead, so today the pins are inside the socket. Those pins in the socket are very delicate. If you grab into the socket or something falls into it (like if you drop the CPU into the socket), the pins get bent and your board is basically broken. The board's manufacturer won't accept it back as it's technically your fault that it broke.

Any tips on how to avoid that? Or do I just have to be really careful and take my time?

The board's manual will have some sort of explanation on how to work. The board comes with a plastic cap on the socket when you get it, so it's only vulnerable after you remove that cap and go about installing the CPU.

I hate the grinding sound/feeling when the CPU is placed in the socket and you're closing down the latch to secure it in. I feel like I'm breaking something every time.

You really think that component manufacturers are manically laughing and saying "good thing the crux of our components is static electricity MUHAHAHAHA! the poor fools we're really raking in the money now!"

The only time you have to worry about static is if you happen to be building your computer inches away from a electrostatic generator.

... I agree with you. The look on the company president's face when he walked into my office and I had the primary file server turned on, running, in my lap, open, with a screwdriver in hand, was absolutely priceless.

Possibly more so because the engineers in the company (I was the Systems Administrator/sole IT) had some fairly expensive anti-static rigs for the equipment they worked on.

(Note: To date, I have worked with a lot of computers. Never have I had an issue with static discharge destroying a part. If it fails, I always assume something mechanical - bent pins, broken contacts, things like that. The only time I'd be worried is if there is visible scorching and there's been a lightning storm recently.)

Edit: On reflection, I should also note that I've never been completely cavalier about the possibility either - I tend to ground myself before working on a computer even if I don't use a strap or any of that kind of thing and I would advise against rubbing a piece of rabbit fur with a glass rod inside a computer case.)

Funny, just last week one of my professors was telling about how he shorted a computer while working on a project. He didn't specify when it happened but I got the impression that this was in the infancy of computing. This was also part of our electromagnetic compatibility course and I was quite surprised to find out how little static charge it would actually take to fry something... That said, I've also done countless builds/upgrades without taking any more precaution than touching a door knob without incident.

As does almost everyone!

Tbh though, not breaking the pins on the motherboard is akin to "common sense". Just be careful around fragile parts and you're good to go.

Hello guys! I'm in need of a new setup, and since last time you helped me so much when I was constructing my gf's comp a year and a half ago I thought I would ask for help here again. Her build is serving her pretty good and I would like to thank you again for that

I don't really know how to post my budget since prices here in Croatia are mostly pretty different from what people post here (most of the stuff is more expensive here).

Budget: About 800$, could go a little over that. I don't need any peripherals. (Since I'm in Croatia, I think if you work with a budget of $650-$700 it would turn up about $800 here.)
Monitor native resolution: 1080p
What games do I intend to play/settings: I usually play online games so I dont really get in touch with crazy single player graphics.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?: Not for any high-requirement stuff. Programming, maybe some low-level 3d modeling.
Do you intend to overclock?: No
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?: No
Do you need an operating system?: No
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?: No
If you have any requirements or brand preferences: I would probably like to keep my 2 existing hard drives. This one, and this one. These are mostly my storage HDDs, I can buy an SSD to run my OS or even another HDD if you think it would be better.
What country will you be buying your parts in?: Croatia
Retailler preferences: No

Thank you very much for your help again! If someone answers, I will check the prices here to check on the budget differences.

Well I thought it wouldn't be of much use since they are in Croatian and you would have to convert the prices from HRK to $.
This would most likely be the retailer, but I'm sure they have stuff not on their page and they could get something else if needed. You can use the search on the top to find specific components. Edit: there is a little EUR sign right next to the shop logo where you can change the pricing to euro.

If you really want you can use this site to check the prices in Croatia, it lists all the shops and their prices (search bar is top right) but they are also in croatian.

As I said, I don't expect you to go through that trouble, you could just work with the budget I gave and I will check for the prices and post any changes with the budget if needed.

Well, I'm curious as to what parts are available in Croatia. :p

Here's what I put together, for 4224 kn:

ASRock H81M-GL for 309 kn: http://www.edigital.hr/Maticne_ploce/ASRock_s1150_H81M-GL_maticna_ploca-p46248.html?bid=&partner=10001&utm_source=nabava.net&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=abTest1

Core 1000 for 288 kn: http://infokom.com.hr/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=438&search=core 1000

Crucial M500 for 908 kn: http://www.centro.hr/detalji_proizvoda.7116aa205f234f8db43502942c300a6a.crucial-240gb-m500-sata-6gbps-2-5-7mm-with-9-5mm-adapter-ssd.aspx

Crucial vengeance (2x4 Gb RAM) for 599 kn: http://www.edigital.hr/DDR3_memorija/RAM_DDR3_Corsair_(CMZ8GX3M1A1600C9)_8_GB_1600MHz_8GB_Vengeance_Heatspreader-p48393.html

XFX core 450W PSU for 325 kn: http://www.centro.hr/detalji_proizvoda.cce7779427d74eb88c7dad81f74e6080.xfx-pro-series-coreedition-80-450w-psu-xfx-p1-450s-x2b9.aspx

Other possibilities include:

http://www.centro.hr/detalji_proizvoda.9b6406feaade435ea69b2f951ea05113.kuciste-thermaltake-v4-black-edition.aspx

I'm not sure what the V4 is compared to the Core 1000. I like the Core 1000 but with this case you stick to two vendors. It seems all right if you look at user reviews but I can't find a big review site and user reviews are to be taken with a grain of salt: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133179

Smaller SSD is cheaper:

beefier GPU (raises the price to 4500 kn so it's not breaking the bank and it's a great GPU):
http://www.edigital.hr/Nvidia/Gigabyte_PCI-E_Nvidia_GTX660_WF2_(2048MB_DDR5_192bit_1033/6008Mhz_2xDVI_HDMI_DP_Dual_Slot_Ventilator)-p70717.html

Croatian prices are hard to think about for me (oh god numbers and converting back and forth and what is worth what and underpriced/overpriced tishgaughg), but worth mentioning that some people ship from germany. My friend was considering it when he lived in Croatia but did it i think after moving to Austria which is a little closer

I didn't convert or anything, just looked to see if i could find an equivalent piece of hardware for a cheaper price. the first site i was looking at was actually grossly overpriced and I didn't realize it until after I stumbed upon the other two retailers. Not too sure why I went and fleshed it all out instead of doing my standard "get this processor with an H81 board" post. :p

By the way, I've been curious.

I'm running an i5-2300 2.8GHz on an ASROCK H61M-HVS mb with 8Gb of RAM. I just upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon R9-270X 2Gb VRAM. But I've still got my old PSU - I think it's only 400W.

Although the performance is much improved and the framerate shot up to between 65-95fps, I get the occasional stutter/hiccup while in the game. It's not constant but often enough to be annoying. Those mili/microsecond pauses can be deadly, as you know...

So, my question is, whether the PSU is affecting this, or is it something else? I know it's not the GPU, and I'm pretty sure the CPU is more than capable of handling CloD (maybe I'm wrong).

So is it my PSU not supplying enough juice to the Radeon causing this momentary pauses? If so, what wattage do I need to be sure I have enough? Can I get away with a 600W, or do I need 750W? My budget is under $100, to replace the PSU.

Is it possible to have your CPU or GPU throttle due to a bad PSU or not enough power? I thought the system would just flat out black out or the PSU would fry or something.

Well that post is bad.

Is it possible to have your CPU or GPU throttle due to a bad PSU or not enough power?

If your CPU or GPU clock speeds are dropping (that's a big if) then you can see it plain as day with various bits of easy to use software, and if (another big if) that's caused by a bad PSU not being able to supply its rated power in a decent way, then it might be fixed with a decent unit

just buying one outright though would be silly because you don't even know if throttling is happening, and if it is, there are many different causes

To directly answer your question, most good PSU's have a certain point where they will just cut power

^That makes sense to me, thanks

and yeah I don't think that a hiccup or a stutter is indicative of throttling. i think just using afterburner to see if clockrates plummet for no reason is a better indication for that

This isn't the R9 270x stutter issue is it? There was a VBIOS update and new drivers to fix that. (Although I still have that problem in my 280x, and it only started after the VBIOS update

Just had a herp derp moment. I am almost getting close to finishing up putting together my new build and I forgot the case has two fans. One in the front and one in the back by the CPU (not the cpu fan). However, my motherboard only has a connector for one system fan. Is it worthwhile getting some kind of splitter for the mother board or a connector to the power supply unit for the front fan? Or will I be okay with just one case fan for the time being.

There's "Y-cables". You can use those to connect two fans to the same fan header. That should be the best and cheapest method to get it to work. A cable to the PSU has the downside that it will run at a fixed speed which might mean a noisy fan at 12V.

If you buy a Y-cable for 4-pin fans, it will also work with 3-pin fans.

umm help lol should my CPU Fan always be on? I had liquid cooling in my last computer so not sure if somethng is messed up or if its okay that the fan isnt spinning while installing windows 7

EDIT: Was on for like 5-10 mins so hopefully the CPU didnt get screwed up? Found the problem some how the cpu fan's wiring got caught in the fan blade so i popped out all the wires and moved it away from the fan. Redoing windows 7 installation and everything seems to be running fine. So I hope I didn't damage the chip at all However, is there any tests or anything I can do to check if I damaged the CPU in any way?

I'm not sure what sort of issue it was. It could have been his CPU not being strong enough for the game or it could have been the server he was playing on acting up.
