What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Diablo3, Dota2, ESO, WoW, BF4, and a ton of other games that are coming out that I would like to have a solid PC for
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Work/Streaming
Do you intend to overclock? No initially, but I don't want to rule it out (I'm not the most experience when it comes to overclocking, but I'd like to do it"
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? I would SLI if the performance/price is better than a single card.
Do you need an operating system? No
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? 2 Monitors, I have all other peripherals. I would like the monitors to be apart of the budget, but it isn't necessary.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. I generally stick to EVGA and Intel since i'm the most familiar with them, but I am always open to suggestions.
What country will you be buying your parts in? USA
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Newegg, TigerDirect, Amazon, MicroCenter Are you going to game on both monitors or just one? I'll probably just game on the one and use the second one for other standard operations Skype, Chrome etc This is what I built after a couple minutes on newegg, feel free to critique / give suggestions on better setups. Intel i7-4770 Haswell 3.4ghz LGA 1150 Quad-Core MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 ATX High Performance Triple CFX/SLI Intel board G.Skill Ripjaws X 8gb (2x4gb) DDR3 SDRAM 2133 EVGA SuperNOVA 1300w 80plus Gold EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked 3gb 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI-E 3.0 2TB WD Green HDD Samsung 840 Pro 256gb SATA III SSD Current price is $1,896 so I'd like to try and bring it down, but I want to build a pretty powerful PC, that I can upgrade/SLI sometime in the next 2-3months don't pay more than $85 or so for 2x4gb ~2133c9/10 or ~2400c10-11 RAM you probably want a 4670k instead of a 4770k, unless you're doing stuff that specifically benefits from hyperthreading. 4770k only outperforms 4670k in a few games WD green is slower than other drives, only get it if you want slow storage usually (like for archiving stuff) 1300w PSU is a massive waste of money for such a setup With a basic OC, you'd hit about 120 to 150 watts with a 4770k. It's quite hard to break past this number - meanwhile, unless you do things with your GPU which involves having more advanced overclocking knowledge and voiding its warranty, you can't draw more than ~270w with it. Your entire system power consumption would thus be in the ~400-500w range peak, assuming you oc'd both - you're actually hurting efficiency from having such a PSU, that would not be appropriate unless you wanted to run three 780ti's, which is kinda awkward on z87 without a plx chip (which that board does not have) and also completely weird and pointless for anything less than 1440p or 3x+ surround gaming 780 is the value choice over 780ti. 780ti can outperform 780 by about 1.25x - but it's usually about ~1.2x or a bit less, and that is assuming that you are matching clocks on both. Unless you remove the power limit (void warranty) and cool it well, you can't do this, so it's essentially ~1.15x. It costs a lot more than 15% extra, though - here in the UK they cost about 1.4x extra, so it's hardly value for money. It doesn't make sense on 1080p 60hz either, particularly - with such a powerful GPU, one that's better than sli760 when OC'd, you would expect at the very very least a 1080p120 monitor or 1440p60, with turned up graphics settings You want to SLI 780's? Take a 750w psu, 850 if you want to be really sure while pushing OC's Thanks for the feedback/suggestions! Looking forward to running with these ideas and building my new PC this weekend. Would waiting a month or so and then buying another identical 780 be worth the investment you think? over dropping a decent bit more on a 780ti now 2 780's over single ti, yes Show nested quote +
Thanks! I'll save this list and go off this for now. I can buy another cooler for the CPU, I'm going to eventually liquid cool the PC, and that I know how to do/am comfortable with, so buying a decent cooler for the CPU now is no problem
Do you have any recommendations for 2 monitors I could get?
Full custom loop? Monitor depends what you want there's 1080p60, 1080p120, 1440p60 (some overclockable), ROG swift is 1440p120, some have strobe capability (which reduces perceived motion blur to about 1/10'th of a 60hz monitor) and some coming out have gsync which is nice for those games where you can't laugh and hold 100+fps (league, osu and CSGO come to mind) and also TN vs IPS - most, or even all of the strobe/gsync monitors are TN though, due to its faster nature, though it gives up the color uniformity of IPS (colors look a bit different depending on the angle you are viewing from) etc
Yeah, full custom loop. I was going to cool the GPUs/CPU in the future, probably once I get the second 780
I would like to ideally keep the monitors to around $6-700 total for both, but if a single large monitor (25"-27") is around $400-500 I could wait for the second monitor and get a nicer one now. You have a lot more knowledge on this than I do, so I'm going off your best advice here as well

As long as it doesn't turn out to be a turd, save and budget for the ROG Swift or something similar. Don't even think about overspending on hardware (which quickly gets outdated anyway), never mind custom water, and not having a display to take advantage of it.

Agreed, i'm taking good advantage of 1080p120 w/ a 770
770 = 8 smx, 32 ROP's, ~7600mhz RAM on 256 bit bus, 2gb VRAM total
sli780 = 24 SMX as well as 48 ROP's and ~7000mhz RAM on a 384 bit bus, 3gb VRAM total
That's 3x as many SMX (cuda cores, TMU's) with 50% more ROP's and ~40% higher memory bandwidth for the sli780.
Cores+TMU's (smx) are additive for performance, each card needs its own memory bandwidth though, so that does not scale further, and i think ROPS are per-card and not shared, too, hence those numbers
Water is not cost effective at all, it's an enthusiast/performance thing: Worth getting, but only after other stuff is solid
|
So would you say getting 2 1080p120 monitors, or one for now would be a good choice? I'd like to have a nice monitor for the time being since my old monitor is having issues
|
There's no point in both being 120 Hz.
In fact, I'd consider one of those sub-$400 1440p displays instead. I don't keep up with which model is best (some have some combination of lots of dead pixels, terrible uniformity, no or poor OSD, brightness / contrast control that's pretty much broken, too high minimum brightness, no VESA mount option with poor stand, and so on), but one of those that can run 96+ Hz should be somewhat better than a standard 60 Hz option overall, and these are IPS/PLS so more desirable later on if you upgrade to something else and are no longer using one to run games.

Alright wonderful, thanks a lot!

Water is not cost effective at all, it's an enthusiast/performance thing: Worth getting, but only after other stuff is solid I still don't really know what to think about SLI. The method they use to let the cards work together introduces latency. The cards are taking turns in painting frames. They are each drawing those frames all by themselves without any help from the other card. This means painting a frame takes the same time as if you'd just have a single GPU instead of SLI. The high framerates in SLI won't mean what it normally means, reduced latency and a more snappy feeling, instead it just means the animations are smoother. Additionally, I bet they might have fixed stutter problems by delaying frames somewhat compared to a system without SLI so the latency might actually be worse than on a single card.
I drew a picture: http://i.imgur.com/I1NeqBf.png
I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding things. I especially don't know what happens with the game sending commands to the GPU through the driver. The GPU might need some sort of hand holding from the game and can't finish it until the game checks on answers from the GPU that depend on what's being drawn. I don't understand how that works if it's SLI and not a single GPU and how you'd get an FPS increase out of SLI.

Yeah, there used to be split frame rendering, but nowadays I think it's all alternate frame rendering.

I don't doubt that strong single GPU is better, but once you have the best silicon out there there's not much more to improve on (unless you want to pay 40% more for 15% more performance and leave it at that)
is part of why i'm getting a maxwell flagship as opposed to a second 770
|
Quick question: how big of a difference is between 8gb of ram at 2400mhz and 16gb at 1600 mhz?
|
A big difference depending on what you are doing. If you are gaming than you want 8GB @ 2400MHz since you will never use that much memory. If you are editing than you'll want as much memory as you can get.

Faster memory improves performance in some cases and it's hard to reason against paying $10-20 extra for on a 1.3k build
you don't want to ever run out of memory within reasonable use, but the only game that takes me above ~4-5gb usage, is planetside 2 while i have a browser and tabs open, as well as skype, OBS etc (the game process alone uses like 3.5GB of RAM)

Looking for a 1080p 120hz Monitor, and a 1080p 60hz one, any suggestions? I've been looking around on Newegg/TigerDirect and can't seem to find ones that are "Reasonably" priced (although my view on what is reasonable might be off since I don't know good prices for 120hz monitors)

If you're buying one before the gsync/ulmb wave, benq z-series with v2 firmware is where to look iirc
I think you're looking at a bit over $250 for one

Need help with new computer. Woke up this morning to see my cores running 99-103 degrees celcius only to momentarily later shit hit the fan and my liquid cooling start to leak all over my motherboard zzzz. Computer is/was roughly 5 years old from ibuypower. This time around I am opting to put it together myself or at least to find the correct parts.
500-700 USD ideally
1920x1080
Diablo 3, Hearthstone, Starcraft 2, FPS games such as the Bioshocks, Dishonored, Titan Fall, Team Fortress 2, Loadout
I would like to be able to watch a downloaded video or stream a video that's 720-1080p quality without any quality issues. Also if possible I would like to be able to stream my gameplay at a decent quality since I have a 20-25 mb upload.
Yes and no. I would prefer not to overclock if it's not necessary but if there comes a time when there is a large upside to doing so then I would like to have the option to do so.
I don't intend to use Crossfire/SLI as I can't really see when I would ever need to do so but if a pro on here suggests I should then I will reconsider.
No I believe I still have my Windows 7 64bit from my old computer that died.
I still have my monitor and all peripherals form old computer.
No requirements on brands as long as it's not crap haha.
I live in the North East of the United States. So basically will be buying parts in the US
No retailer preferences as long as its trustworthy
Thanks a bunch to anyone who is able to help me. Normally I would do a bunch of research on my own over a period of time but seeing as how I am in a bit of a pinch with my computer dying on me out of nowhere this morning I am in need of help.

If I bumped my budget by 100 or so and capped it at 800 do you think I could make a fair amount of improvements to the ones you listed? Also assuming my old power supply is good which is a XION 700 Watt should I use that?

Lots of Xion models but in general, their power supplies are not good.
4570 and B85 aren't overclockable so if you want an overclockable setup as you mentioned. You'll need a 4670k instead of the 4570 - which is about $30 more - and a Z87 instead of a B85 - which is about $60 more.
|
Well you could reuse your HDD, RAM (if DDR3), Case, DVD Burner and I guess your PSU if you really wanted to. I wouldn't reuse the PSU, it wasn't even a quality unit when it was made and if any of the liquid got in it, you could fry the new components your buying.
Then you would only need a GPU, CPU, Cooler, Motherboard and a SSD. That would free up some money so you could overclock the CPU and get a more powerful GPU.

Ah okay I'll prob go ahead try to bump my budget up to 800 and redo the whole thing I guess. Is it possible to get a real solid computer for all I want to do with close to modern standards? My monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse are all in good condition still so won't have to worry about that stuff at least.
@iTzSnypah my case is the "Cyborgx" from ibuypower and I'm not sure what size category the case would fit into.
When I bought my old computer 5 years ago I was still real new to buying my own computer but now I'm trying to learn as much as possible so thank you everyone who is helping me ^_^
