Currently it'll be the only thing I'm going to buy, but I'd like some of the really smart tech people of TL to give me some advice on what to replace it with, since I haven't really been following the GPU market.
To give you an idea, the newly toasted GPU I had was an AMD 6970. Something of newer generation that can at least put up a comparable performance would be preferred. I'm impartial to the Nvidia/AMD difference and I'll let the performance/price ratio and availability decide. Radeon HD7950 for about $230 or a Radeon HD7970 for about $320 would be both be good options.
Quick response as always!
Are there and Nvidia counterparts you'd recommend me checking the price/availability levels of concurrently? I find that in Denmark prices and availability isn't always what you can find in NA/UK etc.
|
The Nvidia counterparts would be the GTX 660 Ti and GTX 760.
|
From my price research so far I can gather that the price level here seems to be that the GTX 760 has a price similar to the HD7950, and the GTX 770 is actually cheaper than the HD7970.
From the benchmarks I looked up(mainly Anandtech) my logic tells me that both Nvidia cards are better purchases then. Any faulty assumption there?
A different question on the subject. When I last looked at GPU's it was consensus that the amount of Ram the GPU had was rather insignificant for almost any purpose a consumer would have as long as it was 1GB. Does this still hold true?

what makes the i5-3470 better than the amd 8350? i will also be doing anime as well

All of these cards have 2GB or 3GB of memory which is enough for most games on max settings at 1080p.

My friend has an old case(pentium 4 era) in his basement and wants to try to fit the parts in....
ATX size? 120mm intake, exhaust and two tops or comparable airflow? I havn't seen a single case aside from one bought specifically for a build like this (even a low end one), and i mean like the cases i've seen from OEM's etc - they were all horrible. There's a PC in my house that has a case that literally, just literally doesn't have any fan slots, it's a box with standoffs and a hard drive cage.
Love the idea of more ram just wondering if buying 2*2x4 rams wouldnt save my couple buck...?
Probably not, and 2x8gb sticks is preferable to 4x4
The 760 is more bang for buck, the 770 is more bang, gl

I have asked him, is there any airflow and he goes "dude lets drill some hole" "...". So its just for the heck of it

Not a good idea to be using a case from the Pentium 4 era since that was when cases were basically a box made of plastic and steel with no cable management, terrible HDD mounting, and lack of fan mounts. And an old case is certainly not going to fit a Noctua NH-U14S and possibly not even a GTX 760.
SLI is gaming oriented, not something that will help with rendering. Most rendering software like 3ds Max and Maya are all CPU dependent.
2x8GB is preferred as it puts less stress on the memory controller and gives you the option to upgrade to 32GB if necessary in the future.
Antec doesn't make power supplies so you'll have to be more specific as their line-up consists of Delta, FSP, CWT, and Seasonic. Some of their older units from a long time ago had issues but their line up today generally consists of okay to excellent units. The High Current Gamer M you have listed is based on a Seasonic M12II Bronze which is a good unit but is overpriced at $150. For $10 more, you can get a Corsair AX760 or Seasonic X750 which are fully modular, gold, and seven year warranty.
Is there any reason why you don't have an SSD in your build? Having an SSD and not having one is much more noticeable than having a GTX 770 instead of a GTX 760.

Is this laptop any good?
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230600
All I really want a laptop for is to connect it through HDMI to my HDTV to watch video streams and to use basic programs like ms office. I need a laptop rather than tablet because I need the keyboard. By video streams I mean netflix, nhl centre ice, sc2 streams, etc.
I already have a gaming pc.

For those wondering about 660 Ti vs 7950 and such, I would suggest you read this review:
http://techreport.com/review/23981/radeon-hd-7950-vs-geforce-gtx-660-ti-revisited
I keep linking it heh. At the moment it really seems as if Nvidia is doing better than AMD in terms of their products so as of Autumn 2013 I think going with Nvidia is a good choice. If you're going for a 660 Ti, I suggest you also take a look at 760 which has a very comparable price tag on it.

Didn't they make single GPU frametimes more consistent on AMD side since that review? (9 months old)
Also, a lot of the value for GPU comes from OC. They're testing the 7950 at 850-950mhz when they can do like 1100-1300 depending on cooling and luck (not 100% sure), and the 660ti at 1033-1111mhz when they pretty much all clock decently into the 1200's effortlessly, but hit a wall
660ti and 760 are pretty much same thing, you're trading off from 1344 cores to 1152 going from 660ti to 760 to get wider memory bus and maybe better VRAM IC's, gpu boost 2.0 too giving it an edge; i think if you manually clock the cards they're really close in performance (beating eachother depending on application/use)
Nvidia had Shadowplay going for them, it was announced to release in june by multiple sources, postponed to before the end of summer, and there's been pretty much no communication from them so -10 points on that front

Hi TL! I am in the mood to replace my current rig of 2 years old to something that will play BF4/Crysis3/GTA V at high-ultra setting
I am using a 23" monitor and already have casing, ssd and hdd if that matters
My current rig specs are: I5-2500k Msi P67A-C45 DDR3 1333mhz 4x2gm Team Elite ram EVGA GTX560 Epsillon 600W Thermaltake contac 29
was browsing a forum and came across 2 2nd hand rigs,
Build 1 $1300 (No HDD) i7-3770K Costarica Asus Maximus V Extreme Corsair Vengeance Red 2x4GB 1866Mhz Cl9 Inno3D GTX 770 Herculez 2000 Seasonic P1000 Platinum NZXT Kraken X60
Build 2 $1125 Intel Core i7 3770k 3.4Ghz Cache 8MB ASRock Z77 Extreme6 GEN3 (LGA1155, Intel Z77. DDR3, USB3, SATA3) WDC 150GB 10000RPM - Velociraptor - WD1500HLFS Patriot DDR3 Viper 3 Series Dual Channel PC17000 8GB CL11 Gigabyte Geforce GTX590 3072MB 768 bit Azza Solano PSU FSP Everest 900Watt 85+ bronze(SLI)
Those 2 rigs are about 6-7 months old
Why 2nd hand? 1) The USD has risen against our currency in the past 2-3 months thus affecting NEW parts pricing by about 20% 2) A new EVGA GTX770 2GB costs $450 here, a second hand one will be around 20-25% lower (adjusted to currency change) 3) It is a fun experience to sell/buy old rigs and put them on part by part
Please help me decide if it is better for me to be getting either of these rig or upgrade my current one
Thank you in advance!

i7-3770k is not really any better for gaming. The difference in performance from the RAM is small, and some of the supporting components are just more expensive but don't really improve any performance.
i5-2500k should be plenty fine if it's overclocked.
Just replace the GTX 560 with another graphics card.

Cool, thanks for pointing that out.
I learn so much from this thread xD

Hot damn, I've read the OPs and I'm mighty impressed by its content. As being a tech geek for over two decades I'm very critical when it comes to technological knowledge, because there is a ton of misinformation and plain stupidity when it comes to computer hardware and people writing/talking about it. I found none of those in the OP. It's super concise with tons of rational and reliable advice. Personally I would improve some of the sections, add short ones (to not overly duplicate content from other threads) about: - mice: concerning reliability of the manufacturers, grip type, price and importance of having proper mousepad - keyboards: mech vs rubber (price, sound and feeling of typing) - display: ups and downs of IPS vs TN, 60hz vs 120hz/144hz - routers: short guide about QoS and its significance
|
Well we already have these three threads. But i don't think we have a thread dedicated specifically to routers.

So I am receiving my AMD 7950 today since my GTX 560 is basically dead (its lasted so very long T_T) Im wondering what to use to overclock it, and what overclock settings I should use. I think the standard clock it comes at is 900Mhz
