i like big cases. looks etc. i dont mind bringing something smaller to a lan so i can just get 2 pcs. definetly want something nice looking at home to look at xd i wanted the obsidian 800D cos i think 900D might be too much but since i cant get my hands on it anymore, 900D will be ok :D i hear the 750D is similar to 800D but much more plastic, any knowledge?
Also looked at the xigmatek elysium and rosewill thor but the thor i cant get in europe and i ended up 900D>elysium
you are definetly right about the lan part and small computer but i dont go to lan too often otherwise i would have had a lan pc already. just scared a big pc breaks easier when traveling. i guess there are bags and stuff i can put them in to prevent damage? dno laptop dying ill respond to more when im back D:

Yeah, I'm definitely biased. I like stupid looking little cases, the smaller the better, so I guess you should keep that in mind when thinking about those suggestions I made. :>
If you get a large case, also get a large cooler like the NH-U14S. The Gigabyte boards I've seen actually seemed to feel more robust than others, were flexing very little so maybe were using thicker material or something(?) (though I only compared to pretty cheap boards). I'm sure you don't have to worry about an NH-U14S getting ripped out. On the full size ATX boards, the graphics card is moved away a little from the CPU socket, so there's nothing to worry about a large air cooler touching the graphics card.
I think I'd worry more about the graphics card with its possibly heavy cooler while on the road with the PC. Overall, I feel it shouldn't be too dangerous with the PC case resting on its side and on a blanket, both for the graphics card and CPU cooler.
If you don't care about money much, you could take a good look at the CLC coolers for CPU. You might find it looking neat through the window of the 900D or something. Most of the weight of the cooler will be screwed into your case with those, not resting on the board. You need something large like 240mm (two fans side-by-side) to beat a good, large air cooler. The 120mm sized CLC coolers are too weak, so not good enough for their price, I feel.

looks fine
speaking of awesome tiny cases, the N1 case is probably going to ship soon

and I'm looking forward to some of the steambox-based cases that'll come out at CES
might be time to think about a new ITX build

deals for tigerdirec/ncixt boxing day arent that good... hoping CC better

I personally wouldn't want the louder reference-design graphics card model, but it's fine. MSI's Twin Frozr / Gaming whatever model should be only some $10 less with lower temps and noise, and I don't think an Alienware case couldn't handle the heat.
You could probably save significantly on 8GB of DDR3 RAM (really, at 1600 MHz, it shouldn't be over $60) and maybe a bit on the motherboard.
Other than that it looks fine.

As above, the RAM looks crazy expensive for what it is.

Just learned what modular PS are and I'm assuming it's generally a want for builders....? Do the modular PS come with the cables or do you have to buy em seperately? What are some good modular PS for a nonOC 4670 and ~nvida 600 series

not sure... was thinking a 650, 660 TI or 760... only 1 gpu Im not sure what SLI is but im at most using dual monitors

Hello TL Tech Support,
I am considering an upgrade to my CPU and Mobo. I would like some guidance as to what to purchase as my last upgrade session was a long time ago and my computer knowledge is outdated.
Currently, my build consist of + Show Spoiler +AMD Athlon 635 x4 4 sticks 2gb of ddr3 Some AM3 mobo samsung 830 120 gb ssd hitachi 500gb hdd Gigabyte 6850 2 gb corsair 450w PSU
What is your budget? I prefer to spend under 300 USD. If the increase in performance is marginal, then I would prefer to go for the cheaper option.
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 and a secondary monitor at 1600x900
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? BF4, Rome 2, and Natural Selection 2
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? School related things.
Do you intend to overclock? Maybe: I do possess an after market heatsink but am unfamiliar with how to overclock.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. I would like to purchase AMD products if possible as I am an investor in the company.
Also, I need the Mobo to have 4 ram slots so that I do not have to purchase more ram.
What country will you be buying your parts in? America
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Newegg and Amazon are available to me. (rest in peace Santa Clara Microcenter; you will always be missed.)
(editted: added information to current specs)

660ti/760 average draw is under 150w, 4670k turbo is limited to 84w (it will throttle from turbo clocks IF it hits it.. but will probably be closer to 60w)
so entire system draw would be like 250 peak, it's kinda silly. Any decent PSU is fine, emphasis on quality rather than arbitrary wattage rating

Which mobo is it? (to check stuff like vrm's, am3 or am3+)
Haswell has significant performance advantage over AMD's CPU's in rome 2, sc2 and probably ns2 as well, but not really in bf4, but if you have suitable mobo to drop in an fx6300 or fx8320 then it's maybe worth it and good cheap option
What is your PSU model also?
|
It is an AM3. and my PSU is a corsair 450w.
Primarily, I am considering the upgrade because of poor performance in BF4 with my current setup. The performance with low settings in most games with my athlon chip was suitable. However, the performance of my setup was not suitable for BF4(and in fact it causes black screens of death for my computer).
(edit: fixed awful grammar)

I'm confused what happened to the good video card prices. I was looking at an MSI r9 280 for 320 and I figured I'd wait because it was only 20 dollars off. Now i can't find anything anywhere near that price.
Hoping some stuff drops for boxing day!
|
@mcteazy i dont think most of the current flyers really reflect the "boxing day" sales (except tiger direct) check again on 24th evening
@cyro So any "decent" 450w I assume would be sufficient correct? What is the labelling of brozne gold plat etc? Can you provide 3 good PSU that are modular (or semi modular) that fit my criteria (Canada). This also was never answered. Do the cables come with modular PSU or you have to buy seperate?
|
McTeazy, some higher-end card prices are inflated currently as a result of cryptocurrency mining.
Leeoku, almost all modular power supplies come with the cables. Sometimes you can purchase different-length or blinged out alternative cable sets. Or simply extra cables or different types of ones.
On a non-modular 350W+ power supply (all you need), there's unlikely to be more than one or two cable strands that you wouldn't be using. I don't really see much point in having lower-wattage modular models, especially for use in a typical roomy mid-tower case where there's lots of room to stuff cables, and there correspondingly aren't too many options. It's a different matter for high-wattage models where you're looking at cable / kraken / tentacle monsters or small form factor systems.
If you can spare the money, Rosewill Capstone 450-M or Seasonic G 450W (SSR-450RM) should be fine. There really aren't reasonably priced fully modular sets that aren't considerably lower quality.

Another question. I was reading and abit confused abit haswell vs ivy (4000 vs 3000 series). Im only concerned about non -OC. Some posts on tomshardware were saying the 3570 would outperform the 4570
|
Haswell is a newer architecture with several improvements to the design. It also supports some new features and has a better integrated graphics core (both not really relevant here, but still). Clock speeds are similar compared to Ivy Bridge.
Possibly there's some pathological example where Ivy Bridge could have better performance, but in pretty much everything Haswell should be a little faster or about the same.
For various reasons Haswell is more challenging to overclock and doesn't overclock as well, so effective overclocked performance is sometimes worse. That's not relevant for what you're asking but explains some things you might have come across.

Issue with finished PC
I just finished my bro's PC, and put the DVI port from monitor into the GPU, however, when i power it up, it says no signal. even if i use HDMI. also, i tried using the motherboard DVI port, and still no signal.
what could be the problem?
EDIT: also, everything lights up. the gpu fan spins, and case fan spins, the stock fan for cpu spins.
EDIT2: i removed the GPU and used the mother board with DVI and it works so now im sure something is wrong with the GPU set up
maybe im putting in the PCIE ports wrong?
but when i turn it on, the GPU lights up and the fans spin

Did you forget the PCI-E power connectors for the GPU?
