I thought "twin fans" referred to the Twin Frozr cooler which is a great heatsink generally speaking. Either way there's no reason to get a shitty blower fan unless it's Nvidia's on a 780 or something.
So there's apparently this new heatsink which is coming out link, from a new company called Cryorig. I couldn't find prices anywhere though, nor are any reviews of it out.
I decided to just compare very basic stats with the Noctua NH-D14.
http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=34&lng=en&set=1
^Noctua says that it does 19,6 dBa of noise and it displaces 110,3 m^3/h of air, with the NF-P14 fan.
Cryorig's R1 apparently does (with its XF140 fan) 19 - 23 dBa of noise and displaces 75 CFM, which is equal to a displacement of 129 m^3/h of air (used this for conversion)
Of course that doesn't tell the entire story at all, still need to wait for reviews and benchmarks, and other things matter for the heatsink, probably things like total surface of fins and if the heatpipes transfer heat efficiently. I just found it nifty that an air cooler might appear that competes with the NH-D14, especially if it's priced nicely. They also talk about RAM compatibility; the heatsink fits even with RAM with tall heatspreaders installed.
Thoughts? My knowledge of heatsinks is quite paltry and I'm looking to improve it, this is a good a place as any to start.

Seems interesting, particularly different fin density

ALMOST NOBODY'S LISTED FAN STATS ARE ACCURATE TO ANY STANDARD, NEVER MIND COMPARABLE WITH EACH OTHER (AND OFTEN NOT BETWEEN DIFFERENT MODELS FROM THE SAME COMPANY)
*ahem* sorry. The conditions under which measurements are taken, distances assumed, etc. are not going to be the same. In fact, often times at least the noise figures are taken at a shorter distance and extrapolated.
The front fan on the R1 is a slim model for clearing retardedly tall RAM heatspreaders that are mostly useless anyway. There's no way it's as good as the middle fan other than taking less space. Unless the price is high, almost nobody ships decent fans with respect to acoustics (sometimes decent with respect to restricted airflow). These are just sleeve bearing fans... which are generally fine for the orientation and application, but they're not special.
It might be pretty good, but it's not breaking new ground in amazing ways and probably shouldn't be projected to be anything more than marginally better than current offerings of similar size at best. The operational principles aren't different here.

what if it ships at $30 ? :p
nah more seriously, is there any way for air coolers to get better than they currently are? it "feels" as if they've reached their limit

So many options for gpus....

Thanks, Thanks. Then I'll be looking for help on parts. Any suggestions on what mobo? I know I don't need Z77 because not overclocking, but not sure what differences between Hxx or Bxx RAM depends on what speed/clock mobo supports, so have to pick it after I know what mobo I use. GPU prob Radeon HD7770? case also depends on mobo, also need CPU fan. Other parts I have no clue.

$500 is for what? Includes OS? Monitor? What?
$500 for the box and everything inside but the CPU and nothing more?

Man there was a 150 dollar 7950 that sold out in a couple hours yesterday... I guess you've gotta be constantly hunting to find the best deals
|
hmm considering buying the 500gb SSD instead of the 250gb one...or maybe save the money and get 250gb and then later on jsut regular hard drives?
Edit: nvm decided for 250gb. will only be using it for OS anyway and maybe some others.

Are you going to game at all or just use things like Office and web browsers? We need to know what kind of programs you're going to use, if you're not going to game then the integrated graphics should be enough, you won't need a graphics card.
For the motherboard Hxx and Bxx should be enough, they're cheap (~$50) and their purpose is to hold everything together.
8 Gb of DD3 RAM should do, speed should be 1333 or 1600 MHz, it should be work fine.
Hxx and Bxx motherboards should be mATX (micro ATX) form factor, so you can find a case with that form factor and everything will be fine. Good budget cases are the NZXT Source 210 and the Fractal Design Core 1000.
You don't need an aftermarket heatsink (CPU fan) since the one that comes with the processor is sufficient, since you're not going to overclock.

is the 7950 still powerful enough to handle recent AAA releases on highish settings? what's 3D's reputation?
|
7950 would still fare reasonably well without AA.
Club3D is a European brand so I don't know much about them.

hmmmm. the level i was looking at was around 300 for a gpu, so gtx 760 with no sale. would i see significantly better performance with that?
also thanks for your help, really appreciate it... takes a lot of the forum/review trawling out of this process
Edit: they also have a 7970 listed there for 300, and i can't tell the reason it's so cheap...
|
Radeon HD7950 and GTX 760 are about equal in terms of performance. It just comes down to pricing, brand preference, and which feature will benefit you more (AMD's Mantle API or Nvidia's ShadowPlay and G-Sync). Also game bundles.
$300 for a Radeon HD7970 is regular pricing so nothing special about that.
Most retailers start their Black Friday sale tonight so I'd wait a little longer to see what goes on sale.
|
Yeah. waiting for tonight and into tmmrw for sales. I won't be at a computer but that's what mobile data is for
saved $40 on the ssd so I might actually end up getting an i7. anyone have recommendations? there are so many different ones :/
edit: if you needed to know the MB im getting : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128591 will be checking here too if you guys post any goodies

How difficult is it to OC? I originally went with a nonOC Board+core but the only ones i see crashing in sales are the z87 boards and K cores

Hm I'll consider that when I purchase those on boxing day.
I just read that many people were recommending getting a 760 or 660 TI. Whats the actual difference? Or should I just get a 7950 which is the amd equivalent? Not sure how they all differ
