Are the quad core AMDs adequate for highish end gaming?
They're much weaker than i5 or fx 6-8 cores at decent clocks. You basically have 0.6x of an FX-8320 if you have an a10 +oc, and bf4 is cpu hungry

What you can do is simply compare it. You'll see that it's usually faster even for latency after you normalize the speeds for a comparison. That 2400 you linked, its timings would look like this at 1600 speed (if fractions would be possible): 7.3 - 8.7 - 8.7 - 8.7 - 20.7 So, it would be faster than those 9 you were thinking to compare it to. + Show Spoiler [the calculations] + > 11 / 2400 * 1600 ans = 7.333333333 > 13 / 2400 * 1600 ans = 8.666666667 > 31 / 2400 * 1600 ans = 20.66666667

Under $600 What is your monitor's native resolution? 1900x1080 What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? League of Legends, Minecraft, and some games on Steam. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Homework such as using Microsoft office, browsing the web, and whatnot. Do you intend to overclock? Nope. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Nope. Do you need an operating system? Nope, got one. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Monitor, and other peripherals are not part of my budget. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Nothing, but would like to get some deals online due to the holidays. I live pretty close to a Microcenter, so if there are parts that I should get there instead, please specify. What country will you be buying your parts in? USA If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Nah.

Mobo: GB Z87X D3H $85 (already bought it) Ram: G Skill RipJaws X 2x4GB $80 I've seen various frequencies of this being recommended, not sure which would be best. GPU: XFX or MSI R9 280X $320 Case: Fractal Core 3000? $45 Still kind of undecided on a case, the Define R4 looks pretty though. PSU: Seasonic G450 $85 I think I want to aim for a cleaner build this time, so that's why I was thinking about a modular PSU. SSD: ADATA SX900? 256GB $150 What are your thoughts on this compared to Samsung 840 Evo/Crucial M500 which I've seen recommended in the last couple pages? I'm not very good at comparing SSD's except for their read/write speeds. Other possibility, Corsair Force Series GS 240GB $180 Also, does Intel's SRT work only on Intel SSDs? I heard about it when watching some build videos, and might use that and get a smaller SSD like 180GB or something instead. HDD: Decided to just salvage my 2x 500GB Seagate Barracudas. Totals between $1095 to $1125 before tax at their current prices depending on SSD and case choice. Noctua NH-U14S is good but sort of expensive at $90. If Newegg ever restocks it, you'll be able to pricematch it at ME to get it for ~$63. NCIX also currently has the Noctua NH-U12S for $60 which is the little brother of the U14S. Seasonic G is only semi-modular, not entirely modular. If you want entirely modular than you'll need to look at Seasonic X or Corsair RM which are a bit pricier. Intel SRT works with any SSD but SRT is limited to 64GB. Yes, you can get a 180GB SSD and partition it to be used for SRT and as a primary drive but the process is somewhat difficult from what I remember due to the caching setup. Most people don't recommend Sandforce solutions due to their poor history.

The colour scheme of it is really meh though, but I suppose I'll never look down into my tower anyways. From the pictures of the Seasonic G, it looks like only the 2 motherboard cables are non-modular? I'd be fine with that since those need to be there anyways. I ended up getting the SSD anyways, price looked pretty good for 256GB. The majority of the reviews I found for it say that whatever problems Sandforce had before have been fixed. Hope that holds true. Since the SSD is 256GB, might not need the SRT option. I'll try to keep an eye over the next few weeks and wait on hopefully some better deals for the rest of the parts. Thanks a lot to everyone :D

Non oc? Less than half of that, OC maybe a bit more than half. You can get high end GPU etc in that kind of budget no problem, but sc2 doesn't need

Don't you play any other games? With that budget you can set yourself up with a pretty beefy gaming rig, as well as a new monitor. @Nagisama, careful with RAM with tall heat-spreaders, make sure that it won't prevent you from installing the aftermarket heatsink. @Pokemonxoxo: For something like that you can probably articulate your build around a Haswell i5 (without the k suffix, since no overclock) ($190 on Newegg atm) and a $170-200 GPU (something like a 650 Ti or 7870/R9 270). No overclock so go with an H81 motherboard (>$50). For the case you can use something like Fractal Design Core 1000 or NZXT 210 Source (>$40). PSU something like a Rosewill Capstone 450 or the Antec Neo Eco 520C (~$60). 8 Gb of DDR3 1600 RAM (~$80). A 1 TB HDD from Seagate should be around $65. All of that should roughly fit into a $600 budget, might go a little over, might not, depends on the deals you find.

So I suppose my couple of questions are on pricing trends and value per dollar. 1. The 7870 was 120, it went up by 10 dollars about 24 hours - should I take this as a sign that these are selling well and not to bank on anything better coming for black friday? Same kind of question for the 7850 deal earlier this month... I presume these deals are occuring because of the R7's and R9's that are going to be replacing them, so existing stock has to be cleared. Does anyone have any insight into when we can expect 7850's and 7870's to disappear? As I would definitely like to snag one on a deal before the rebrand bumps the price back up $50. These questions are pretty 'look into your crystal ball and tell me the future', but I though I'd ask on the off chance someone more in touch with the graphics card industry had more info than me.

This is the build I (in addition to the wonderful people in this thread) came up with http://pcpartpicker.com/user/smoothasskiwi/saved/2IBc A couple things to bear in mind: - I bought a budget case cause IDGAF, feel free to change it for whatever suits your taste. - You'll probably want to add in wireless capability (I got some little TP Link USB thing for ~$7) - This build is using an SSD for the OS and some other stuff (I like LoL to load quickly), you can sub it out for a cheaper and larger HDD if you want. Personally 120gb is enough space for me, it may not be for you, however. - The graphics card is more powerful than you will need, but it is very well priced as it is on sale for today (maybe a few days), if you want to save more money you can wait for a good deal on a less powerful, but cheaper card. - Don't forget that buying at Microcenter means paying sales tax, their prices are still cheaper for CPUs (and I think there should still be a $10 off coupon for buying a Samsung Evo with an i5 4570), but it's an easy thing to overlook. - A lot of the parts I've selected require mail-in rebates. Which means you will be paying it all up front, and get $80 in rebates back in the mail (which can take several weeks).

None Here is my Build that I plan on buying for Cyber Monday, and I would like to hear your guys thought on it: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Days/saved/2TRP I am not too sure what to do about my hard drive, I have a 320 GB 7200rpm hard drive I use now. Not sure if switching to an SSD would be a smart move, my budget is 600. Keep in mind I would like to stream because I am a grandmaster zerg player and many people keep bothering me about my crappy quality stream so I really would like to improve my quality and stream at atleast medium quality settings.
