This is basically how you would want to setup the Scene Switcher for your needs: http://i.imgur.com/SUgh1OD.png

Whenever StarCraft II is the primary window, it will automatically switch to your "SC2" scene which should already have the game capture source setup for SC2. When it doesn't recognize any active window titles (i.e. when you minimize), it will switch to your "ETC" scene, which could be a picture or a Monitor Capture source for your desktop, etc.

If you want to add more games, just create a separate scene for each game (e.g. Dota2) and add a game capture source for that game. Then, just add the scene and appropriate window title in the plugin and it will automatically switch to the appropriate scene when you play any of your specified games.

(Note: just make sure you put the plugins in the right folders: 32-bit goes into Program Files\OBS\plugins, 64-bit goes into Program Files\OBS\64bit\plugins. It will be listed as "OBS Scene switcher" in your Plugins button in OBS.)

So I've been messing around with OBS, and have everything set up exactly as outlined in the OP, but when I do stream preview, and/or start streaming, all I get is a still image of my game screen. It doesn't matter if I use window capture, monitor capture, or game capture, it all does the same thing.

I can't seem to stream Skype - using window capture gives me a black screen. Monitor capture does show it though. I'm running the 64-bit version. Running OBS as administrator.

Also, can someone summarise for me (because I'm noob), what effect bitrate has on the picture clarity, and cpu usage? I've got about 10mbit upload so I can go quite high on bitrate.
I'm running on an Intel i5 3210M @ 2.50Ghz. My base resolution is 1366*768 and I've downscaled it to 1092x614 with Lanczos filter and 30fps.

Are you using a 2nd monitor with your laptop? Window Capture might not be able to capture a second window behind a fullscreen window (i.e. it won't capture Skype if you're playing fullscreen Hearthstone), but I'm not 100% positive on that. Maybe try running Hearthstone windowed and enable Aero*? (*Assuming you have Windows 7)

Bitrate affects picture quality (higher bitrate = higher quality) and has no effect on CPU usage. Twitch doesn't like when you go over 3500-4000kbps, so consider that a soft cap. If you're only playing games like Hearthstone (minimal motion/change in the scene), then there's really no need to use a high bitrate. If you use a high bitrate you may exceed some viewers' download speeds and they won't be able to watch your stream without lagging.

Also, you probably don't need to downscale the resolution for Hearthstone, but I'm not sure how much power a mobile i5 really has to offer. Text would be sharper if you didn't downscale (not that your stream looks bad, just small improvements :D). For other, more demanding games, you will most likely need to downscale.

I don't have a second monitor. Hearthstone is already running in a window, still getting a black screen with Skype.

I'm going to stream a fair bit of Dota as well, and obviously don't want it to impact my game performance too much. However, current settings are fine. I'll up my bitrate from 1700 to 2300kbps. Thanks for the info1

I think you need to be worried a bit for CPU usage on a weakish (laptop) dual core, so be a bit careful with dota if you are concerned for performance. You can lower CPU usage of dota by FPS capping i'd assume (if your FPS is really high, but it's probably not) and lower CPU usage from streaming by lowering resolution and FPS. Leave preset at Veryfast though. If game runs ok, and stream runs ok, you are probably good

Game runs pretty good, played two full pretty intensive matches. I'll cap my FPS to 45, it used to be 60. I assume this shouldn't make a noticeable difference to me?

I wouldn't bother with that, i just FPS cap games down to etc 90 if the FPS-cap implementation is good and they're running away to 600fps and using a bunch of CPU to do it like LoL does

Hmm ok. Final question - does OBS record my mic input into Skype? I have the mic settings set to push to talk in OBS, but when I was streaming with a skype conversation open, I could hear my clicking and keyboard tapping and it was very loud. This was when I wasn't even holding the PTT button.

PTT in OBS is probably just enabling the mic input, and since skype is activating the mic itself then OBS could be accepting the input? I don't know for sure but this is likely the case?

I haven't used PTT, but if I have my mic muted on OBS it will not pick up my side of a skype call. I assume if PTT was used it would only pick up when activated. No chance the sounds were from your conversation (either whoever you were talking to was clicking or their mic picked up your output?)

You can stream pretty much anything (depending on cpu) more bitrate just makes it look better particularly in motion. If you tried to stream 1920x1080@48fps with 300kbit up, it would be unwatchable

Quite hard to stream with 0.5mbit up, you'd have to use like 300kbit video and 64-96kbit for audio, and probably a low resolution and FPS to make it look at all decent

Quick question, When I play games, there seems to be a black box surrounding all side of my broadcast. Curious as to why this is? I play games at 1600x900 because of my monitor, could that be why?

Your aspect ratio is different to the Twitch player aspect ratio. This is a problem with the twitch player not expanding properly to fit the broadcast.
