I can do a lower bitrate with a better look with dxtory. It seems like that for me.

Capture should be lossless or close to it regardless of method, either its placebo effect or something is messed up i think. The only thing you would expect dxtory to affect would be game performance, usually

Jacosajh, why not stream at higher resolution, if you are limiting yourself to 20fps anyway you should have almost identical game performance @1280x720 and 1920x1080 because the performance drop is mostly due to capturing the screen or game and you have to capture the entire screen anyway

And again, you can do 720p@60fps very easily, you just chose not to because of performance hit on the game.

That is one of the things I've been trying to evaluate. Whether I'm just have needlessly high expectations. I think I am too critical on the gaming aspect compared to the stream aspect. I am more bothered by how the stream affects my gaming than what people see. That's why I don't really think there's a big difference between 20 and 30 FPS. I kind of see it like, "Well, if I can't play at the top of my game, there's no point in displaying it in top-notch quality."

I was running 720@30fps fine on Xsplit. Even then, I ran @20fps. I just wanted to see if this thing could do 720p@60fps as the OP suggests. It took too much of a performance hit that I couldn't really bare with it.

jacosajh - I have a non-overclocked i5 2500k, and it works fine doing 720p 60fps. I'm betting the issue is probably with how you are capturing in general. Just so you know you can always talk to me if you want to try to work at fixing the problem, I'm pretty much always around. You can email me or talk to me or other users directly through the chat that's set up on the site.

Any of you guys can do the same if you wish. I can't promise I can get everything working perfectly for everyone, but at the very least I can hopefully help some people out.

Different people have different results and requirements, its important to keep CPU encoding limits and game performance as seperate factors though i think

What do you mean by how I'm capturing? As I said in my response. I've tried capturing both in Custom and in Monitor, then downscaling the resolution 1.5 (from 1080p). I've also got Aero disabled.

Thanks for the help; it would be awesome to stream at 720 @ 60 fps without a big performance hit -- unless I'm just too picky at performance.

P.S. Does streaming in multiscreen affect anything? My monitors are running off different GPUs though.

Hmm, running on different GPUs? I have actually had to fix a problem with this recently.. could you try the (edit) latest version, turn off the preview by right clicking the preview and disabling it, and see if that gets rid of your performance problems?

There is currently an issue that only happens in your specific setup (I think), where if you do not disable preview, it will create some system lag because it has to draw the preview screen on both GPUs, and it has to transfer data between non-linked cards or something, which seems to create abnormal system lag. It's a really weird problem that only happens with your specific setup. When preview is disabled, everything is fine, but when enabled, it just lags stuff up for people who use separate GPUs for monitors because it seems it has to transfer that data. Let me know of your results if you try.

So i've had OBS for almost a month from now. At start, and after a fresh new installation of my new GPU (HD Ati 6870), it streamed smoothly with High Setting in Starcraft @ 720p 60FPS (quality 10).
However, over time, the stream went weird, without affecting my ingame quality. Some viewers complain about sudden breaks, wich I can visualize when I watch my stream.
Any tips for me to overcome this issue?

You are using a first gen i5 at stock, a 3570k would have somewhere around double your performance (ballpark)

I think your settings are too aggressive and 1280x720@60fps or 1440x900@45fps is just a touch too much, you will be fine most of the time but not 100%.

You could go to a faster preset, but that wont help you. Veryfast is the sensible limit, going to superfast takes some 6% off CPU load but more than doubles the amount of data you need to have the same output quality, you would be better just to cut your FPS from 1280x720@60fps to 40 or so, and 1440x900 to 25-30.

Im pretty sure that will help you out a lot if not fix all of your problems, you are throwing up settings as if you were using an ivy bridge i5 and you are really not.

1080p30 / 720p60 standard only really came around with first gen i7's @4ghz, which would outperform your CPU by ~70-80% and then sandy and ivy bridge came along which puts those processors to shame. You literally have the weakest non-low-power first generation desktop i5 and you cant come anywhere close to matching the settings that overclocked higher end or flat out newer CPU's can run without issues or setup time.

Thanks man, thats helpfull, as I was already watching to buy a new CPU+mobo.

So wich one should be:
I5 2500k
or
I5 3570k?

Running into a big problem. Not quite sure how to fix it. I tried adding a Webcam source to OBS and it almost works. However when I'm done moving the webcam source around to position it and then stop the preview or close the program, it freezes and my settings are not saved. Did anyone run into this issue?

First I thought it was my Dxtory because I updated OBS and it gave me an error telling me to add it to the ignore list. But I fixed that and I'm still running into this issue. Very frustrating.

EDIT:

I use 2 scenes. One screen capture and one Dxtory because my stream will stutter otherwise. After some testing it seems that when I try to move the webcam source in the Dxtory scene, it messes up. The webcam source in the screen capture scene works fine.

3570k unless you want a high end overclock, then 2500k is slightly better. You would probably want to go with a non-k CPU and non-overclocking motherboard to save money though if you are not overclocking.

When would one use DXtory? Is it a crutch for a missing streaming component?

It's an alternate capture method. It gives better game performance for some, worse for others, but is otherwise identical.

Probably, Xsplit has a lot of nice features, and some upcoming stuff that fixes most of the concerns i had with using it.
