I am not sure what you mean, but I have tried both: Capturing by resolution 1920x1080 and then capturing by Monitor.
I am playing in Windowed Fullscreen.

The "edit scene" option is grayed out even after adding a scene and a source. If I hit "preview stream" I get the message "cannot initialize desktop audio sound, more info in the log file" and then the program crashes. I don't know what to do to fix this.
Also, how do I find my stream key? On xsplit I had the option of either key or password, so it was never an issue.

you can find your stream key at en.twitch.tv/broadcast -- just hit the "show key" button.
please send me the log file if you get a crash.

How do I set to 1280x720 only ? I still want to use 1680x1050 for my native reso but when streaming I just want it to go to 720p

Clean install of Windows 7 and Starcraft 2. Under file output only, .mp4 files are created but they're 1.3kb and cannot be run.
Any ideas?

To update to a newer version of OBS, do I just uninstall my current version and install the new one? Will the Settings carry over?

I'm having a problem streaming Dota 2, It just gives me a black screen when I go into dota 2 full screen
Edit: Fixed my problem, just needed to change my Dota 2 settings to borderless fullscreen ^.^

I didnt read all 28 pages, but the performance is great (compared to LiveStream.com free bradcaster version atleast). I had some problems adding scenes. So for others not to make the same mistake i did.
The "edit scene" is grey and when u start bradcasting it light up. But by right clicking in the white spaces (to the left) for scene and source u will get the options u need (click the botton itself does nothing without the added scenes). Took awhile for me to figure out as i was adding scenes in the global scource and nothing happened and i couldnt add scenes in the "edit scene".
Now its working fine, thanks for this software its satisfies my streaming needs at the moment.

The only real problem I'm having is sound. Mine's AAC at the max level, but the sound still comes out pretty electronica/wonky when I play Dota 2.
I have pretty good specs: 3.4 ghz and 3.2 upload. My stream is pretty laggy in SC2, but dota 2 it works out alright.
What do I want my settings to be at and what resolution?

^ghz is not a measure of performance, just clock speed (they are not the same thing)
A Sandy Bridge CPU set to 3.4ghz with 2 cores enabled will have almost if not around twice as much performance as a bulldozer CPU set to 3.4ghz with 2 cores enabled

The game runs fine, the stream is choppy/stuttering sometimes, they're not immediate giant stops, but it's especially slower.
Sound is also pretty bad.
I have a Phenom x4 965 processor

Phenom II X4 is probably going to have problems with 720p // 60 fps. On Xsplit, I know this would be impossible on a 965. But since people seem to tout how much better this OBS is, you might be able to do 720p // 25 fps or something like that. If this was Xsplit, I would suggest 480p // 25 fps max for Phenom 965.

With Xsplit, I do 720 with 25-30 fps I believe. I use DXtory with it.

Xsplit and OBS use the same encoder. You are not going to see anything more than minor differences in CPU usage and resolution/fps output abilities, only performance of the game, AFAIK. Most of the people stating that dont understand the first thing about streaming programs, and there is a lot of false information everywhere

I think DXtory just made the game a lot better with less pressure on my upload, so maybe I'll have to reinstall hat and apply it to OBS

Is that what you tried? 720p / 25-30 fps? Sometimes, my own personal bias kicks in when I say something isn't acceptable. For me, streaming at certain settings is only acceptable if there is a very slight effect on the game. Even on an i5 2500k @ 4.5Ghz I didn't stream higher than 720p / 20 fps.
In the OP, it says 720p // 60 fps with an i5 3550, but I can't do that with an i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz.

Jacosajh, why not stream at higher resolution, if you are limiting yourself to 20fps anyway you should have almost identical game performance @1280x720 and 1920x1080 because the performance drop is mostly due to capturing the screen or game and you have to capture the entire screen anyway
And again, you can do 720p@60fps very easily, you just chose not to because of performance hit on the game.
