If my graphics card has DVI and mini HDMI and my Xbox 360 has HDMI, what will be the easiest/cheapest way to connect them both to a Dell U2312HM?

The U2312HM doesn't have a HDMI connector; It only has VGA, DVI and DisplayPort.

I bought that viewsonic monitor for my girlfriend a few weeks ago, the 24 inch version. she's really happy with it, very nice color and contrast, 2x hdmi of you need it, BUT, the speakers on it are pretty pathetic so make sure you have solution of some sort for that if you purchase the monitor.

its a nice monitor overall though, I woulda kept it for myself if I coulda :D

I thought we talked about this a long time ago concluding the Asus PA236Q or whatever its called it probably a better idea.

And I think the solution we came up with for the U2312HM was to use a KVM switch or something similar. Something like this. I believe the only major problem is that you have to turn the monitor on first before you turn on any devices. That is because of EDID verification or some similar bullshit.

Edit:
Obviously HDMI switches are fine too since DVI/HDMI are interchangable but that means you have to play around with a ton of adapters. I don't think you'll encounter any HDCP problems (or at least I hope you don't).

..Sure, why not? As long as it has the proper inputs i don't see a problem if you're going to use it to watch shows and stuff like that.

Hey everyone,

My old 24" DGM monitor died on me, and im looking to pick up a new monitor. Considering picking up a pair of these Asus VS239hr monitors. Does anybody have any experience with these? Are they a worthwile investment or should i look to purchase something else?

Primary use is for gaming, whilst having a stream or a film open on the second monitor, plus it will come in useful for doing multiple tasks at once, which is sometimes required with my job.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers

Uh...

Checking Asus's manual for the series, it looks like VS239H has rated 14ms GTG response time, while VS239HR and VS239H-P are rated at 5ms. From the prad.de review of the VS239H, you can clearly see that the response time is pretty slow. At least input lag is minimal. The manual also states that the VS239H-P (but not the others) has selectable "Trace Free" control, which is used to adjust the pixel overdrive to improve response times. These are the same LG eIPS panels in all the other cheaper 23.6" IPS monitors that Dell, Asus, LG, HP, ViewSonic, etc. are using, so difference in response time is just up to the overdrive implementation.

I would say that the 14ms version may be too slow for gaming, definitely for competitive fps. My guess is that the VS239HR is using Asus's default Trace Free setting of 60/100, since it's also quoted at 5ms, but doesn't let you change it to anything else. Most of the other models let you change it to 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100, with generally only 40 and 60 being usable settings of interest. So it should in practice be similar to what you see for the U2312HM and so on—faster response at the expense of a little overshoot artifacting. That kind of responsiveness is probably good enough for most people. If you're used to CRTs or play very fast-panning games and are sensitive to this, look elsewhere.

So aside from that, it should be a typical decent eIPS monitor. Low price and pretty decent performance all around. Nothing special to say. The stand only does tilt, so no height or any other adjustments. However, there are VESA mounts in case you ever want to use some aftermarket stand instead.

Hello I was looking at purchasing another monitor to watch movies and stuff on while I game, and had some questions I was hoping someone could answer. What's the difference between 4ms gtg response times on VA panels and 5ms reponse of TN panels? Here's a link of the monitor I was looking at, my main concern is motion blurring, inverse ghosting etc that is commonly associated with VA panels.

You should pretty much ignore any response time number as a serious metric for comparison.

It's still probably not as fast as most 5ms TN panels, but tested results are pretty good. See pictures of ghosting behavior here for the GW2450 here:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/content/benq_gw2450hm.htm#gaming

That should give you an idea of the general behavior. Looks like in other testing at another site, the GW2250 does a little bit better for motion performance than the GW2250, so that's also encouraging:
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/3055/6/benq-gw2250hm-gw2450hm-and-gw2750hm-review-test-results-response-time

For "movies and stuff", should be good to go.

Thanks for the info. Would you recommend me paying an extra 40$ for an IPS screen since it has richer colors? I was looking at this one, and since the listed response times aren't an accurate way to determine ghosting, and input lag behavior what would I generally look for when inquiring about it?

IPS has better viewing angles, while VA has lower black levels so better contrast. VA used to have worse responsiveness, but that doesn't seem to be the case for newer models like this series.

Any processing or scaling latency is unrelated to ghosting. Ghosting is about pixel response times, not input lag. It's just that manufacturers (often times between models by the same manufacturer, which is pretty sad) aren't honest about specs or test them in different ways, so there's no consistent basis for comparison. Also that the time it takes to change depends on which colors it goes between.

S2240M is another reasonable choice. It's glossy, so reflective, which some people like more and others don't like or can't use. As long as you don't have light sources in front of the screen, it's probably better. I wouldn't expect its motion performance to be better than the BenQ model though, but it shouldn't be bad.

I just searched prad.de and tftcentral.co.uk for reviews of the Samsung S23A750D but couldn't find any. tftcentral keeps using Samsung 2233RZ as a reference (for example in the test of the Dell U2312HM). Are those two monitors just to similiar?

TFT Central hasn't reviewed the S23A750D. Prad has a review of the S27A950 in German and I believe the larger models aren't too different from the smaller models.

To put it simply, motion performance is basically perfect in 120hz and 60hz mode. Input lag when running in 120hz mode is 13ms. Input lag when running in 60hz mode (so consoles) is around 20ms.

I currently use a LG L2000C, which has a LG.Philips S-IPS panel (LM201U05) with a response time of 8 ms G2G, which was used in many other monitors (NEC LCD2090UXi, BenQ FP2092, HP LP2065; see tftcentral). Unfortunately I don't know how much input lag this LM201U05 panel has; I don't feel it though (still: fewer is always better!). Motion performance could be better, but I don't have a comparison.

The problem is I can't be sure how much of an improvement the S23A750D or the U2312HM (which is also rated as 8 ms G2G by the way) would be in comparison to my old monitor. So how about an educated guess to help me out ;P?

If its using the same panel as the NEC LCD2090UXi, then the U2312HM will be significantly worse no doubt about it. I think they were some of the last monitors to use the A-TW polarizer, which was the best thing since sliced bread. Not just that, the screen treatment on those monitors is less aggressive than the one encountered on the Dell U2312HM. So if you're looking to buy a better 60hz monitor, you're not going to find one.

If you're looking for a wide screen monitor, I wouldn't bother with the U2312HM if you have money to spend. If you have access to Dell coupons and can drive the price down to oblivion on their webstore, its a solid option for a 23" matte IPS monitor. But from what I remember, Germany and Nordic countries actually have a really good range of 23" IPS/PLS monitors for not too much more. I can't remember the name of any German webstores unfortunately...

The S23A750D will definitely have better motion performance, especially if you can push well above 60 FPS, but that's it. 120hz is a huge draw for a lot of gamers so try it out some time, if you can, because seeing is believing.

About input lag: if the LG L2000C behaves like the LCD2090UXi, you're expecting around two frames of lag (so ~30ms). Assuming I'm right, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with any modern display if your current display isn't bothering you.
