$30 off on Amazon? To what price? I see $139 there. Even if it's more like $109, I'm not so sure unless your budget is really that low.

VS228H-P is just a regular 60Hz TN monitor, and it (confusingly, wtf Asus naming conventions) doesn't even have "Trace Free" overdrive controls, and the stand only does tilt. That said, it's a modern TN so motion performance / ghosting is not going to be bad, just not as good as the faster sets these days.

You can get the same thing but with an eIPS panel and overdrive controls (an IPS is going to need it) by getting the VS229H-P instead, which isn't much more expensive.

Thanks for the reply Myrmidon! So should I get the VS229H-P or is there another in the similar price range that's better? This is just for my second monitor (trying to try out dual monitors + use for xbox 360) as my main right now doesn't have an HDMI port. Also, do you think the VS229H-P will go on sale any time soon or any other good monitors for that matter?

When larger or more feature-rich monitors (e.g. better factory calibration, better stand, better warranty, scaling options maybe, etc.) go on sale, they're still above $150. For example, a good price on a U2212HM may be $180 or so, and that's pretty much the same thing except with a stand that can also do height/rotate/swivel and a better warranty. Is that worth waiting for?

Usually the stuff that's normally $150 and lower don't really go on much of sales, except for junker old models you don't want and the occasional moderate deal like on the VS228H-P (if in fact you did find it at like $110-120?).

Well alright that kinda sucks haha, alright well I think I'll go for the VS229H-P like you suggested now, since it won't get any cheaper haha. Thanks for the opinions and advice ^_^.

If anyone wants to burn a few thousand bucks on a professional monitor, Eizo appears to have brought back the A-TW polarizer in their Eizo CG246:

Interestingly, the panel is apparently not from LG Philips even though it would be the obvious guess. I'm thinking Samsung but even Samsung's professional monitor doesn't use RGB LEDs since it only covers 99% of sRGB. Japan Display (Sony, Hitachi, Toshiba) maybe? But they don't really make desktop sized panels...? A somewhat exciting development

Whats the opinion on the Asus VG278HE (it has 144 Hz instead of "just" 120)? (Prad test available on the 26th of November.)

VG278HE loses the IR emitter (so you're probably not going to get 3D) and apparently has dodgier precalibration. 144hz probably doesn't really do all that much in the real world and I really don't think 1920x1080 resolution on a matte 27" TN monitor is the best idea. You've got pixel pitch issues exacerbated by the matte coating and you've got image stability problems because of large screen + panel technology with bad vertical viewing angles.

Gah... an update on the monitor I bought... it seemed fine at first, but then about a day or two later a thin vertical blue line near the center appeared from top to bottom... Defective monitor? Sucks, don't think I'm going to go with an ASUS again, time to return

That's probably defective but not much you can do about it. Defects like can happen with all companies so rather than Asus sending you a shitty product, chances are that you're just unlucky.

To determine how well the company backs their product, you need to see how they deal with this problem.

On a side note, the Dell U2913WM (the 21 monitor) has been released in Australia. Price is apparently around $650, which is interesting to say the least.

i'm looking to pick up a pair for 24" 16:10 monitors. always heard good things about the Dell UltraSharp U2412M so i'm leaning towards those right now.

i'll be using it for normal everyday crap (mostly browsing / reading / watching), but i want a pair of nice monitors because i tend to keep my peripherals for a pretty long time (almost always until they die) and i don't want to go dual screen with two different monitors (it'd bother me way too much).

one thing that i'm concerned about is brightness, i'm pretty light-sensitive and my current monitor (acer x203w) i have to set to the lowest brightness setting. if i did this with the dells would it still be too bright? would it negate the color quality / clarity that i'd be paying for? i like to work in a dark room so having two giant monitors burning my eyes doesn't sound like fun.

i'm not really in a rush to pick them up either so if anyone could give a median price for good deals (or alternative monitors) on them that'd be great

oh yeah, the vertical height adjustment and rotation are pretty big pluses.

The Dell U2412M has a minimum brightness of 50cd/m2, which really should be low enough for you. Static contrast ratio and brightness is stable across all brightness settings so the quality of the image shouldn't really change drastically. If you don't like it, you can return it to Dell easily.

16:10 monitors don't really exist anymore. Other options would be the Asus PA248Q, HP ZR2440W, Samsung S24A850, Eizo EV2436 ($$$). The Samsung S24A850 and Eizo EV2436 have less obstrusive antiglare coatings than the Asus, HP, and Dell so look at these monitors if the matte coating on most IPS monitors is a problem. If input lag is a concern, then the Samsung and HP are not good options.

As I said,16:10 is pretty much dead. It might be better if you look at 23" monitors. Costs will be much lower and you have a lot more options to pick from.

The lowest I've seen the Dell U2412M was $260 AUD. You have two options: wait till Dell has a huge sale during Black Friday/New Years/Christmas/whatever or give them a call and see if you can get a package deal.

is there a comparable 16 monitor that is significantly cheaper? the dell 23" doesn't look like a good option due to the brightness issues and it actually costs the same as the 24" (at least on amazon)

What brightness issue? If you're talking about the buzzing, that should have been fixed a while ago. And you can just easily exchange the monitor as well.

the op says that the lowest brightness is not particularly dim and some reviews echo the sentiment.

We were talking about minimum brightness earlier, so the reference is probably to U2312HM min brightness of 114.2 cd/m^2 (tftcentral, default contrast), unless that has been changed?

I'd just get the U2412HM (or wait for a better price). Any options that are significantly cheaper are going to be some combination of smaller, not 16 : 10, without height or rotational adjustment, and with higher minimum brightness.

I don't believe it has changed. There are some nice 23" options like Fujitsu, lower end NEC, and Eizo Flexscans/Foris but I quite literally can't find any sources in the United States that sell them.

Eizo is a particuarly nice option since the brightness goes all the way down to like 0cd/m^2, although this obviously messes with the contrast ratio.

Taking into account that I quite literally can't find any 23" IPS monitors that have height adjustment from typical US sources, your best option is probably the U2412M as suggested by Myrmidon.

Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up a second monitor to use dual monitors. I've been reading up on monitors and such a bit recently, but am still sort of confused. I have a Gateway FHD2400 24-Inch Widescreen FHD Display (AIO) that I run 1800x1200 with. The monitor I'm looking at right now is ASUS VS229H-P Black because it seems at a pretty good price.

I'm looking for anything close to $200 or below to run dual screen with. I'm confused because I'm looking on newegg and I see all these different asus monitors with tons of high ratings and then there's all these different S231, VE, VS, VH models. I'd be using this for gaming: battlefield 3, sc2, other fps games. I figure all the 120hz monitors are $250+.

Do you guys have any recommendations for me, and are the recommended monitors kept updated as the weeks go by?

The Asus VS229H-P is a perfectly fine monitor for the price. IPS, low input lag, has adjustable overdrive function. For $200, I can't think of any IPS monitors are have good overdrive settings.

Is there any benefit in having a TN instead of an IPS monitor at the price I'm looking in for gaming?

A good 2ms monitor will have less ghosting but they generally cost $200 or over $200 so...
