So I'm getting an ASUS VG236H monitor and I was stuck on whether to get a HDMI cable for connection or a Dual-Link DVI-D. If it matters, I will be using a GTX 670 GPU, and the thread says that they don't support Display Port very well so I don't think I'll be going with that. So I'm choosing between the two following. First, the Dual-link DVI-D and this HDMI cable. The HDMI cable is a lot cheaper, I don't really know about the video quality of both on the monitor, so I'm not sure which to go with.

Any input would be greatly appreciated (no pun intended). Thanks!!!

The OP explains that both DVI and HDMI transmit the exact same digital video signal, except HDMI also carries audio, but has less bandwidth so it can't do 1920x1080 120Hz. The VG236H comes with a Dual-Link DVI-D cable so... you really shouldn't use anything else and there isn't any reason to do so.

Can't find any decent reviews online on the following monitors, any help guys?

1) HP 23-inch X2301 micro thin LED SWORD Monitor
2) AOC 21.5-inch Led wide super slim, Razor e2243Fw
3) AOC i2353PH
4) ASUS LCD ML229H IPS

#1 is a Glossy TN with no height adjustment. I'd only get it if you prefer glossy but can't spend more for a better glossy monitor [120Hz TN (for serious gaming) or IPS]. Should be decent but nothing special.

#2 is your average TN.

#3 has been reviewed by TFTCentral and by Anandtech. It's listed in the OP.

#4 Is an eIPS - If I had to guess, it's using one of the same or similar-performing IPS panels from LG.Display. as the VS229H-P or the Dell U2312HM or the AOC i2353Ph.
The answers to most of your Tech Support questions are in the OP. That's why you're not getting a reply. It's been answered before. Read the OP.

Your monitor model would be, you know, a little useful.

You probably need to mess around with a mix of things available in the On-Screen Display, as well as some software gamma correction. I'd start by using the Windows 7 calibrator if you have that - it will help you eyeball some gamma and contrast values that look decent to your eyes (and probably somewhat correct), as well as maybe remove some obvious color tints. Then adjust brightness to your comfort level and honestly that's about as good of a calibration as you can do without a calibrator ... if the monitor is bad, there isn't much more you can do about it.

Need your monitor model, though. Most monitors are really bad outside of whatever their "Standard" preset is, so if you start the calibration from something else, your results will probably be worse.

Sorry for the late reply its an acer h233h, also it seems in the bottom right corner there is a yellowish tint or something along those lines.

In the market for a new computer and wanted to go triple monitor on this. Anyone have any recommendations for a monitor that is 23-24", Under $200, and not utter shit? Not much else to what I'm looking for, other than a hopefully thin bezel (I'm not so well versed when it comes to monitor lingo, haha).

Avoid the Acer like the plague. It is beyond shit. As for the Philips, I'm not sure.

I don't really recommend getting a 27" TN screen. Viewing angles become a problem so gamma shift (top of screen has a darker tone than bottom of screen) should be noticeable. Is there any real reason you want a 27" monitor?

When it comes to 27" monitors, the only good ones I can think of are the Samsung S27A750 or 950 (same thing, different packaging, try and get the 750 instead of the 950) and Asus VG278.

This should be pretty decent. You might want to turn its motion performance boost setting (I'm not sure what LG calls it) to medium.

Hmm, how does that compare with this? I need something I can get in Canada, it seems like the LG one you suggested is nowhere to be found up here...

One is TN, the other is IPS. Anyway, prices in Canada are nowhere near as good so a decent IPS at 23"-24" is out of the question.

That being said, the monitor you picked should be fine and good for gaming. According to the manual, it has Asus' trace-free feature so that's a good thing. Set the feature to 40 or 60 for best results.

If you want to get a 23" monitor, then you've got the S23A700 as another option. If you don't have DisplayPort and/or want to use dual-link DVI, then the S23A700 is a good alternative to the S23A750D. They are exactly the same in performance. The difference is in the ports and cosmetics.

Hhhmm.... well i am going to get a gtx670 or hd7950/7970 depending on the price of the sales we have in 1 week here... so i guess ports won't be a problem, and the 700 is 50euros more then the 750 so...

Yeah so the 750 should be the best choice.

What part of the 120hz are you looking for Rachnar? The 3D ability or the 'smoother' display in games? I was under the impression that some of the 27" 2560x1440 ips monitors could do 80-100 frames per second. But I didn't really know.

Both, but 3D isn't as important, it's more for the 120hz for gameplay

if i can save up money without 3d, i'll go for it, and if it's like not even 15% of the price, might as well go with 3d

Any other plausible options? I'm being told by other sources that the Asus VS248H-P is crap.

Well to be honest I don't know enough to be sure I'm not giving you wrong information. Just ghosts of remembering some people gushing over some monitors at OCN. I think all the models I was thinking of are listed in the bottom of the OP in the recommended monitors - 27" section. You could google some of the names & see what info comes up/if they're available in europe.

For 27" monitors I'm surprised no one mentioned the BenQ EW2730 which has a VA panel.. it's not 120Hz but compared to the benefits and drawbacks of other panels: TN (inexpensive/fast gtg response time but bad color accuracy) and IPS (very expensive/best color accuracy but slow gtg response time).. it's the best middle ground of the two..

The BenQ EW2730 specs at 8 ms gtg response time with very good color accuracy while being just slightly more expensive than upper end TN panel monitors while significantly less than IPS monitors that could retails toward $800. You could find the EW2730 for around $400 which is a decent price I think for what you're getting. It's the perfect monitor for the price.. I could notice a huge color/image quality difference between my monitor and my friends' TN panel monitors. It's perhaps not "ideal" for FPS games because it might show slight ghosting but for most, at an 8ms response time, it shouldn't affect gameplay as much as you think (you can google images/gifs and see how much ghosting effects certain response times). But otherwise I think the monitor is perfect for rts, movie viewing, and photoshop editing if you're in the market for a decent all around monitor that's 27".

And its LED too! And before I forget, VA panels have MUCH better viewing angles than TN monitors. Lots of people don't suggest 27" TN monitors in 1080p because the image quality takes a huge hit at that size but that is not the case with VA panels. 27" to me is the perfect size monitor especially on a VA panel.. iunno give it a shot if you're looking for a big monitor.

VH236H then if you're not confident about that option.

The EW series are slow as shit and ahve quite a lot of input lag. Only the most recent VA monitors from Philips are half way decent.

Well, i just ordered a gtx 590, found a very good deal on amazon, 390€, probably will get another one and SLI later on (ya, me be crazy)

But for now the screen, I found a cheap 120hz 27" monitor, SyncMaster T27A750, and still have the Philips - G-line 273G3DHSB as an option (both basicly at the same price, 380€).
I didn't mention before but i don't have the best eyes on the market, so pixel density won't be that much of a problem....
Is this a good deal? If not i'll just go back down to the S23A750D

I don't think that is even true 120hz:

Even if it was true 120hz, the input lag is too high for its own good. Not surprising since its basically a TV, internally.
