Its a TN monitor. What is there to say about it? As I said in the OP, go in a store and buy what looks decent. They're all not very different.

i read the OP but are the potential savings from purchasing online worth not being able to see it in person first? a lot of the monitors i find online with good sales prices I have never seen at my local best buy or staples.

They're all not very different. Chances are that if the Dell ST2421L is a fairly recent monitor, it'll be decent at worst.

Samsung S23A750D
1920x1080 LED backlit 120hz TN monitor. Has: DisplayPort, HDMI, 3.5mm Audio Out. Ergonomic features: backwards/forwards tilt. VESA mount compatible: No.
- Very glossy panel.
- No height adjustment
- Low input lag and pitch perfect responsiveness.
- No 3D for nVidia cards. 3D only works with AMD cards
!!!YOUR VIDEO CARD MUST HAVE DISPLAYPORT TO RUN THIS MONITOR AT 120HZ. HDMI CANNOT DO 120HZ BECAUSE IT LACKS BANDWIDTH!!!

The PowerColor Radeon HD 7850 2GB GDDR5 has 2x Mini DisplayPort. I've noticed other cards have regular "DisplayPort". Do I have what I need to use this monitor?

Also, is there a difference input lag / responsiveness between this and the S23A700D?

Mini DisplayPort is just a different physical connector for DisplayPort, like you see Mini HDMI and different kinds of USB connectors. You just need a cable with the appropriate connectors.

On graphics cards and I think most Apple machines supporting it, Mini DisplayPort is actually more common than the full-size DisplayPort connector. Actually, are't all or at least most 7850s using the reference port configuration: 2 Mini Displayport, HDMI, and DVI?

S23A700D and S23A750D use the same panel and probably similar processing, so input lag and responsiveness should be similar.

I see. I have another question. It's written that the S23A750D can't do 120hz through HDMI. If I got the s23A700 which only has HDMI and dual link DVI, could I only use dual link DVI? Which brings me to my next question: my motherboard is listed as having DVI, but there is no mention of dual link. Does this mean it is incompatible with the S23A700?

Motherboards do not support dual link DVI, but that's irrelevant because you're going through the GPU, not the motherboard. The GPU will support dual link DVI just fine (and dual link DVI >> HDMI for bandwidth).

It will work just fine.

I'm getting a high end PC this week and am looking for a display monitor that can 'live up' to the specs of the pc. I read that IPS monitors have superior colors compared to others, but usually a lower response time etc.
All in all: what is currently the ideal monitor for around 200 EUR ($265) for use with a high end current generation set-up?

U2312HM. If you can't afford that than you're simply left with the typical bad TN monitors.

IPS monitors have less washed-out or shifted colors when viewed from an angle, and many have a bit more accurate colors out of the box, but ones in that kind of price range don't have wider color camut coverage (not that wider than standard sRGB is useful for most people...in fact it's often a liability) or more accurate colors when calibrated.

Lower response time is better. TN has lower response time than the other technologies. If you're sensitive to ghosting, you probably want a decent TN.

Do you need anything with stand height, rotation, or other adjustments? What inputs?

U2312HM has a decent price, a good stand, a good warranty/support, good out-of-box colors, typical IPS benefits, extremely low input lag, reasonable pixel responsiveness, below-average contrast ratio, and high minimum brightness (around 114 cd/m^2; probably too bright for dim lighting viewing). It's a good option.

Thanks, but i'm looking at my gpu and the S23A700, and the GPU says it has DVI-I (dual), HDMI, displayport, vga and dvi-d (SINGLE). The S23A700 is for HDMI and dvi-d (dual). Does this mean they won't be compatible?

DVI-D is digital only.

DVI-I is both analog / digital.

The two would be compatible.

There used to be something called the A-TW filter that eliminated this glow but these days you will only find it in halo products like HP's Dreamcolours ($3000 for a 24" monitor).

As far as I know, the only easily attainable IPS/PLS monitor that won't exhibit silver IPS glow is the Dell ST2220T. The IPS glow is not silver on that monitor. Its a dark violet, which is a billion times better.

Edit
It certainly could be heavy backlight bleeding and if you think its that, ask for a refund or exchange it with Dell.

LG, for whatever reason, keeps producing IPS technology revisions that get worse and worse in most departments but price. I have no idea if LG is responsible for H-IPS and E-IPS but they are nowhere near as good as Hitachi's old S-IPS panels. Shit man, the NEC 20wmgx2 is still the king of LCD monitors and its been god knows how long.

Besides this, the black depth on the Dell U2711 is inline with most non-VA monitors so if that really bothers you, you probably won't find a really good LCD monitor. Knocking the brightness down will definitely improve the black depth...besides that, there isn't much you can do.

Oh it's bad back light glow. It's only in one lower right part, the rest of the monitor look fine (the normal IPS glow).

And I did contact dell. Took two days to get everything worked out with dell, day 1 I didn't have an hr spend on the phone. But they were going to send me out a replacement monitor first then I will send the broken one back so I won't have any downtime. So I was pretty happy about that. Well long story short, and a few days of calling dell I get told that part is unavailable (yes, the monitor). I guess they will call me back about getting me "alternative for the same type of monitor". Not sure what that means.

Weird that the monitor would be unavailable.

The majority of tournaments use their sponsors' products. GSL uses the BenQ Xl2410T which is a 120Hz monitor, I believe Dreamhack does as well. WCG used the S23A750D last year and the older 2233RZ prior iirc. All of which are like $500 fyi.

And your computer build sucks.

Please spoiler that info, we don't need MLG PC specs and MLG rules in a Monitor thread.

There's no such thing as a "tournament quality SC2 monitor". They use that BenQ because they're sponsored by BenQ and BenQ is marketing that monitor specifically to SC2 players. That isn't to say it's bad - I don't know, I haven't read any reviews about it (yet).

The OP explains everything and lists some good monitor options.

As a side note+ Show Spoiler +
it seems IBuyPower had some 480's they wanted to get rid of. I'm not sure why else they'd put such a card in those PC's. But what better way than to get rid of unwated stock and get advertised for it?
The answers to most of your Tech Support questions are in the OP. That's why you're not getting a reply. It's been answered before. Read the OP.

Yeah that's definitely bleeding. God that sucks.

U2711s do go out of stock randomly. It happened in Australia as well. I think Dell uses just-in-time production methods with the Ultrasharp lineup: Dell does run out of stock and you can never find them in an actual brick and mortar store. I think recently the U2412M, the most recent and popular 24" IPS monitor, was out of stock in the United States so it would support this hypothesis.

Alternatively, Dell might be clearing stock for a U2711 product refresh. After all, LG has started manufacturing on their AH-IPS screens and Samsung is already producing 27" PLS panels. Its around the time Dell refreshes their monitors too.

If they want to give you a shittier monitor, remember that you are entitled to, at least, a 27" 2560x1440 IPS screen. Therefore you either get a refund, a new U2711, or a U3011. You find these rules in their warranty literature somewhere.

As the people said above, monitor choices don't really meant too much. The most recent Eizo Dreamhack SC2 tournament used the Eizo FS2332, which is as fast as a 5ms TN monitor at best. Which tells you how much "tournament level" means. That's not to say that the Eizo FS2332 is a bad monitor, because its definitely the best 23" all-round monitor, but these progaming events tend to have pretty strange hardware choices even if they're not under pressure from sponsors.

You don't need a review for it. It'll achieve around 1000:1 contrast, have some neat scaling options for SC1 (note: nVidia cards can already do this through drivers) and probably have some pretty bad stock calibration. It'll also have shitty viewing angles because its a TN monitor.
