Hi Guys,
I built this rig like 3-5 months ago and I am having black screen problem with HD 6850. Its like the display turns black after 15-20 minutes everytime after rebooting. My rig is
i5-2500k, Z68 ASROCK Sapphire HD 6850 8GB corsair 1600Mhz Ram 500gb cav blue. Xigmatek GAIA after market heatsink
Its frustrating that it does this. I was running at 4.5ghz and now have downclocked to default 3.3GHz. Anything specific i can do because I intend to run it at 4.5GHz. also can this happen due to dust collection in GPU fan? I try to compress air blow it every 2 weeks.

Is there any particular action which trigger the black screen, or it just happen normally even on idle?
Does it black screen after downclocking CPU back down to stock? I think its best to identify whether the CPU or GPU is having problem.
I guess you can try running with the onboard HD 3000 graphics to see if it black out after 15-20 minutes as well.

Hey Hydra right now no problems after downclocking, my rig was stable at 4.5ghz for almost 3-4 months. let me check for a couple of days more with this 3.3ghz stock speed

I think it usually bsod when the OC is failing, when it black screen.
Is the pc frozen when it black out? You can check to see if pressing caps lock change the led or not.

I have the same problem with a similar rig... it generally happens when browsing on firefox oddly enough
I thought it might be a voltage shortage on my 560ti, as I was running it at 0.95V under load with afterburner (with overclocking of the gpu), which was the same as the idle voltage, and changing the load voltage to 1.00V made it blank out less often when idle (This makes no sense as it still idles at 0.95V?). Is your gpu overclocked at all? My screen started having issues when I overclocked my gpu, but it was just idling.
Both my cpu and gpu don't idle above 40C, and have no issues under load, so I really don't know what the problem for either of us could be
And this post is confusing, idk, must be tired :/
EDIT: I think my problem is gpu related, as my screen loses input, but if I restart my monitor a few times and spam the keyboard, it does work again. One time my firefox crashed though once the monitor was back online, and the computer did not go to sleep (I'm not that retarded).

Try down clocking to like 4.2ghz with auto voltage or something to see if it stay alive.

Take care with "auto-voltage" OP, it can do some crazy stuff (like frying pan crazy if the multiplier is high enough).
|
Pretty sure it's safe with 4.2ghz on auto setting. Plus it takes a lot of effort to fry a CPU.
|
Yeah, I don't know how high auto voltage sets it, but I've heard it's dangerous. I meant overvoltage fried too, so the frying pan comment was a little off. (higher voltages won't change temps too much, but anything above 1.38v could very easily destroy it)
And OP, if it appears to be a cpu failure (computer turns off completely, not monitor) then test your overclocks with Prime95 and run whilst monitoring temperatures for ~ 30 minutes. Temps only need to be carefully checked for the first 2-3 minutes, make sure they are below 60C, then at 30 minutes check and see if it's still below 60C. If it didn't crash, then your overclock is considered relatively stable, and shouldn't cause problems. If it crashes, you need to increase the manual voltage for the cpu, but this is dangerous. Follow a guide if required.

Hi, sounds like your graphics cards is overheating. Use GPU-Z and realtemp to monitor the temperatures of both your CPU and GPU. If your CPU is hitting temperatures above 85c then that is a problem. If your graphics card is getting warmer then 90c then you might have a problem there too. You should also take the time to stress each component; prime95 is by far the most thorough for you CPU, furmark is very good for a GPU. If you can go 4+ hours without a CTD or a restart with both of these applications, and your temperatures are in check, then you should reinstall your display drivers and/or reformat windows.

Well the good news is..since downclocking this issue is not happening. Also I had forgot to mention that even though there was no BSOD. When i had to manually reset my computer, A window popped up saying "Windows had encountered and error" and in the details it said blue screen. I think I will keep it this way for now till I clean my PC again

I would recommend RMAing your graphics card if it is still under warranty then. Downclocking from stock settings to fix stabililty issues is often a sign that a graphics cards is one it way out. In the very least, you should check to make sure the heatsink on the graphics is mounted correctly, and that there isn't a big glob of dust in the fan and adequate air flow directing air too and away from it.
