You don't have to pay customs or extra taxes from the UK, it took me 2 days to get my keyboard from them delivered to my door with their fastest service. That's the keyboard you want, and thekeyboardco is super good.

Hello, I live in Lansing, Michigan in USA.
I have a mechanical keyboard but I do not like the way the switches feel very much.
I would like to somewhere I can get a feel for how different switches feel before I decide to dish out close to 100 dollars for a keyboard. Is there a somewhere I could go to get a good feel for the switches?

QFR by Cooler Master or a Rosewill are about the only options in that price range.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the QFR isn't in that price range anymore. I rarely see sales on that keyboard ever since it got really popular. The only two that I know of within that price range is the Rosewill and Monoprice. If you're seriously considering a mechanical keyboard I would bump that budget up.

Mechanical keyboards aren't mainstream enough yet to have retail stores have them in stock. You'll probably only see Razer keyboards for the most part. There are switch testers you can buy online, but they cost $10 to $20.

MicroCenter, at least the one here in Minneapolis carries Ducky's these days, I was surprised to see that.

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a small compact keyboard (no numpad, arrow keys or not doesn't really matter).

Currently targeting the CM Storm quickfire rapid but I was wondering what other good options there are? Prefering Brown or Blue switches.

Noppo Choc Mini! Such an awesome little board, definitely meets the requirements you mentioned and is adorable.

They have one in Minneapolis? I never knew. The last time I went to MicroCenter was in St.Louis about two years ago when the CM Storm QFR came out.

If you're looking for a small keyboard here are my suggestions:
Poker II (if you're into the 60% stuff, although not everyone is)
CM Storm QFR (probably the one everyone will suggest to you for good reasons)
HHKB (Happy Hacking Keyboard)
KBT Race (though I think this one is out of stock)

The Ducky Mini is coming out soon, but I'd only get it if you're an LED enthusiast.

Micro Center is an odd franchise. I too would recommend Noppoo Choc Mini, as I have and will continue to do.

If I hate the Blue switches can I assume that I won't like Black very much?
I think I'm going to try Browns (For some reason I just can't get myself to buy switch testers...)
Is there a good way to replace switches on your current board?

^Blue and Brown are relatively close to eachother (but brown doesn't have the loud click, and has actuation point much much closer to release point which is a "flaw" for spamming blues)

black/red are pretty much the same thing but black is heavier

AFAIK - not at all, unless you want to replace only a small amount of keys (lets say like 6 on the numpad) then it's not cost effective or easy at all to replace half of a board or the whole board with another switch

So the Browns seem to be much better when trying to macro Terran?
I just hate the way the blue feels when I try to macro because the switches are pretty high.
I don't really mind the sound too much but I wouldn't mind it at all if they were a bit more quite.

Actually Filco can be found in Swedish retailers nowadays. I know webhallen has them (http://www.webhallen.com/se-sv/datorer_och_tillbehor/158770-filco_ninja_majestouch-2_tenkeyless-svensk&atcl=external:ref). Not sure about Leopold though but there's been a noticeable increase in the amount of mechanical keyboards available in the past year or so. Otherwise I concur that keyboardco is a very nice retailer even if it's outside Sweden. Very nice support if you have questions, a good few models to choose from and reasonable quick delivery, I've bought a topre keyboard and some other stuff from them in the past.

Exactly as Cyro said. If you haven't yet, I'd read up on what the four main mechanical switches are exactly (blues, browns, reds, and blacks). You can check out OCN's guide.

Here's a graph on the force/sound to compare mechanical switches. As you can see, blues are the loudest and require 5g of more force than brown and red switches (which isn't much, but going up to 60g with blacks you may notice the difference).

You can replace the switches, but I HIGHLY advise you to not do so. It's a long process that involves taking apart your keyboard and replacing switches with a soldering iron. Not to mention you have to purchase switches to replace the current ones, it may be more expensive than you'd like. I wouldn't recommend this to beginners who have no knowledge in this area. 90% of the time the keyboard you're buying will have a variety of switch types to choose from so you do not have to resort to such a thing.

I don't really mind the sound too much but I wouldn't mind it at all if they were a bit more quite.

Preference for switch types is a purely subjective topic. Example: I have roommates that have played SC2 with red, blue, and brown switches but we all played at mid-masters. Just a disclaimer, a mechanical keyboard is not going to make you better at the game. People can disagree with me, but I personally believe it's foolish to say that you can't do as well with a rubber dome in SC2 than with a mechanical keyboard (just look at BW for reference). I'd argue most would just get a mechanical keyboard for comfort and customization than anything. I apologize if this is not what you meant when looking at mechanical keyboards, but some do because of the "gaming keyboard" advertisements by companies like Razer and I just want to make sure you're not buying a mechanical keyboard for the wrong reasons.

Although if you want the "generic" answer..yes, browns are "better" for an RTS game such as SC2. Browns are quieter than blues (refer to the graph I linked above). If you still find that they're too loud, you always have the option of adding o-rings to the switches. In a nut shell, there are three sizes of o-rings to choose from (I believe there are still only three, but correct me if I'm wrong) which you attach to the stem of your keycap (the "plastic" thing you press on when typing) which reduces the travel distance as well as dampening the sound of the keys bottoming out.

^Do you think adding o rings to the current Blue switches will lessen the depth that the switches need to go up to be double tapped?

I didn't think it would make me a better player, I just have some disposable income that I didn't have before.

Thanks for the links.

No, the o-rings will change the point where the key bottoms out. They act as a cushion for that. It won't change anything at the top or at the point where the click of the blue switches is.

Alright TL I need some help in figuring out what exactly I want. I'm sitting here with the keytester from maxkeyboards and it I'm still a bit torn. Blue switches are out of the picture. Browns feel a bit.. weird to me. I don't want to say mushy but somewhat... "scratchy" maybe. I can't say I really dislike them but it also doesn't feel super awesome, so I'm basically a bit torn between reds and blacks. I can't exactly quantify the force needed to press a key on my current rubberdome but e.g. for a key like shift my pinky tends to get tired when it comes to things like FPS games where it's used frequently. On the other hand I'm also afraid of accidental keypresses, especially when just resting the hand around the WASD cluster.

When in doubt go for Blacks over Reds or how should I approach this?

As for the actual keyboard I'm looking for a TKL that's simple, classy, built to survive and to bludgeon burglars to death without breaking. I wouldn't mind something like volume keys or backlighting but I consider either more like cool gimmicks than anything else. The only thing that really caught my eye so far is the Filco Majestouch-2 (or more specifically a user modified variant that looks like this) but 170€ (+keycaps sometime in the future) seems just too much for me, especially when I'm not abso-fucking-lutely sure about the switches I really prefer.

Over on reddit someone suggested grabbing a CM Storm Quickfire, painting it & buying a couple of keycaps to get rid of the branding... at which point I might as well see if I find something else that actually fits what I'm looking for.

Is there anything you guys can think of in the 100-130€ range that sounds like something for me? The main candidate so far, unless I really want to deal with the higher price of the Filco or painting a QF, would be a Duck Shine 3.

Cheers. <3

I'd go with reds in your situation, since they're easier to depress your fingers won't get tired. I've used one and I don't think accidental keypresses are really an issue. I have a QFR and they got rid of all the branding on everything awhile ago. The only logo is on the rear side of the keyboard, which you're never going to see.
