Alright, my i5-2400 sits at ~30C idle but goes up to 65-68C under load (SC2, Skyrim) on stock cooler. 68C is acceptable, no? If temperatures get too high it'll throttle itself or even shut down completely anyway, right? My laptop CPU went up to 90C and set fan to 100% which scared the shit out of me the first time it happened since I'd never paid attention to temperatures before.

Laptop CPU are usually designed to be able to work at higher temperature.

For both mobile and desktop CPU, it should throttle itself to avoid getting to hot. If this doesn't work it should shut down. So, you shouldn't worry. 68°C is acceptable. Sandy bridge CPUs are designed to go as high as 98°C before dying.

Can't you replace that with warranty? But you'll want something like 500w perhaps

How do you know if you want a midtower case or a full sized one?

You use your own judgement by going to a store physically or watching videos and reading reviews. If you need to ask than you don't need a full tower - though you can get one just because its cool.

A full tower case is FREAKING HUGE. I went with a mid tower case and it's big in and of itself. I can fit everything I need inside the case. Only get a full tower case if you need a lot of Hard Drive bays or something. But in the end it's all personal preference. Get what you want and can enjoy.

Hello,

I'm planning on upgrading my PC. It's not long term upgrade, just for a year or so.

Current components:
E4500 @ 2.93 GHz (266x11)
2x1 GB DDR2 800MHz
X1950Pro 256MB

CPU will stay unchanged.

I was thinking in investing in 2 more GBs (2x1 GB) of RAM. Are there any potential problems if modules are from different manufacturer (and probably with different chips) than current ones, but declared on same frequency?

Which video card won't be, or will slightly be, bottlenecked by CPU (note it's overclocked from 2.2 GHz to 2.93GHz)? Resolution is 1680x1050. I was thinking of getting something like HD6770 or GTS 450 (or even GTX 550 Ti). Video card will stay in this computer, it won't be part of new computer I'll buy next year, so you don't have to have that in mind. I mean, there is no need to buy GTX 550 Ti just because it's strongest, if there won't be any visible performance advantage on this computer only.

Thanks!

I have this monitor (1680x1050) and this gpu (mini HDMI and DVI connectors)

What cables should I be using? Is there a way I can benefit from the mini HDMI, or should I just use a DVI connection?

This depends on the game. Both those cards are reasonable choices for such a configuration.

It doesn't matter. HDMI carries audio, DVI does not. Pick whichever floats your boat.

Then what is the difference from the Asus P8Z68-V and the V-pro?

Pro has two additional SATA ports, that's about it.

I have a bit of a bizarre question: I really want to play Skyrim, but my craptop can't handle it, and a new computer isn't really in the budget right now. However, my school computers are quite adequate (HD 6350, i7-2600, 8GB RAM). Could I install Skyrim to a USB key and play Skyrim WITHOUT installing it onto the school computer? I don't have administrator privileges, which is why I'm wary.

Also, does it matter if the drivers are significantly out of date? The drivers haven't been updated since 2010.

Skyrim requires Steam does it not? If so, you can't play without installing Steam and the game. And a HD6350 is not adequate.

Bah, foiled again. Guess I'll just have to wait until April when I get my tax return, and can finally build my own computer.
