Okay, the problem is back. This time it occurs while gaming, suddenly my screen turned black and lost signal. Since I couldn’t hear anymore game sound, I am certain that my PC completely crashed / froze. So I definitely have a problem and I think it is still safe to assume that my graphic card is the problem.

I am still in search for a tool to check my VRAM reliably, though I already got a bit disheartened by the fact that Palit apparently doesn’t deal with RMA unless you directly bought from them and the retailer I got the card from went out of business... That wonderful feeling of just a week ago having looked at your finances and thought "man, I hope no expensive part of my PC dies anytime soon..."

So the goalpost shifted more towards making sure I really have to get a new graphics card rather than anything else… any thought on that? I am still very interested in a tool to check VRAM though.

Yes, there are other ways to boot into safe mode besides F8.

I was pretty clear about being interested in a method without having to be able to boot windows first. One of the most common utilizations of safe mode is when dealing with a faulty driver at which point you are often no longer able to boot windows.
I also already went through the first two pages of google

I only encountered the problem this morning when booting. Turned on the PC, went afk and came back to the monitor not getting a signal. I checked the cable, rebooted and either while Windows was booting or after it fully booted (so either after the loading bar was done or during it) I got a black screen with a thick grey horizontal line with some artefacts around it (some pixelated pattern that looked a bit like tilted As, also grey but without clear edges and some discolouring at the edges. I am not sure if I would been able to log in since there is no longer a login sound (now I added one for further debugging, so if it happens again I can at least test if it’s just a graphical error). I did what should have resulted in a login but I can't tell since the screen didn't change.

I got the same artefacts when my old graphic card died, even though they filled the whole screen back then, so I suspected that being the problem. Also up until windows loading/ windows being loaded the screen was normal, like post bios message etc. being displayed properly.

I then tried to boot in safe mode and in the process, the error stopped appearing. Since then windows boots and everything gets displayed properly. I also tried playing some games and could do so without any problems, which isn't a guarantee though.

Because of this I am looking for a program like memtestx86 for VRAM since another theory of mine was that it was a issue with the cable, even though the problem only disappeared long after I readjusted the cable. Last time I checked everything worked fine.

I would rather not wait until the problem occurs again since my graphic card loses its warranty in ~20 days and I also don't want to send it in just because of a suspicion since I would have to ship it to the manufacturer at my own cost + a possible fee for checking the card.

By your description I assume you got a Palit Jetstream / Super Jetstream. If that is the case, try this:
  • Ramp up your GPU fanspeed to 100% via firestorm / tool of your choice, see if crashes still happen

  • If you don’t experience crashes with the fan thing, you can slowly inch towards the critical temperature at which your GPU shuts off. You can figure it out via benchmarks and running msi afterburner (recommended) or SpeedFan (wouldn’t recommend, it will force you to hassle with excel US vs EU formatting) to log the temps. Then adjust your fans to go to 100% before reaching that temp

You still will need a new GPU as this is only a temporary solution to buy some time and you will experience random blackscreens and heavy frame drops, but nothing that makes your PC crash for a while. Your GPU will die eventually though. It is an issue that all the Jetstream/Super Jetstream lines of Palit seem to suffer (like not every Jetstream will have this, but it is present amongst Jetstreams, disregarding if it’s a 980, 1080… etc.). Since you already experienced blackscreens on boot / randomly on desktop even the workaround with the fans won’t buy you much time I assume.

Source: Experienced this first hand and know 3 others that had the same problem, my workaround worked for some time every time.

I also don't know of any good tool to reliably test VRAM, only some gfx specific tools

Try this program here:

https://simtk.org/projects/memtest

I tried the Linux version of it and it works for me.

It's a command line tool and you have to manually change the amount of memory it uses. You have to experiment to find the highest number possible. You can't test all of memory because of what's used by the desktop and the graphics driver. What you would type at the command line looks somewhat like this:

memtestCL 3600 50

This makes it try to get 3600MB from the graphics card driver and makes it run its sequence of memory tests 50 times.

Yes I do have a GTX980 Super Jetstream from Palit and your temporary fix worked so far, as well as the benchmark thing. Whenever the GPU reached 78° the screen would be black, I adjusted the fan curve and now I only encounter lower fps in general / have drops to 20-30fps occasionally, but only very few crashes / backscreens. At least my PC isn't bricked until my new GPU arrives, thanks a lot. I am a bit confused though why this fix works since I still had a crash while just on desktop and running the fans at 100% and the day where I could play for hours without a crash where my GPU definitely got hotter than 78° for a few hours... So it doesn't seem sensible that it is temperature induced but at the same time avoiding getting it to 78° makes the crashes almost disappear.

@Ropid: Its a desktop tool but it seems to work, thanks. When you google it you can also get an up to date version without having to sign up first. 45734 errors in 30 iterations while only checking 2GB... gonna write down the waranty date on my next GPU and test it before it runs out.

Unfortunately, the windows version still suffers from false positives. Haven't gotten around to check the linux version, if it works properly the only real option for testing your VRAM on windows seems to use a live linux / linux partition with this tool.

Hey guys, I have been having this problem for quite some time on my laptop but did not care enough about it to try and solve it until now.

The problem is that I am not able to modify screen brightness anymore. It is stuck on maximum and the buttons are clearly working. I do not know what caused this but I suspect this is related to an issue with my "Video Controller" (which I accessed through the Device Manager). In the general tab, it says "There are no compatible drivers for this device."

I tried looking up the driver through the automatic lookup function but it says it doesn't find any such driver online".

Additionally, the laptop has huge problems running basic games such as Asphalt 8, it lags and the game appears to be run at quite a low resolution even though the with my specs I should be able to run it without any problem.

What do you think is the problem and what should I do?
Thank you.

My guess is something weird is going on with your graphics card. Either your drivers are broken, or the card itself has a problem. Do you know what kind of graphics card (if any) is built into your laptop? Try downloading the drivers from the manufacturer and installing those and see what happens.

I went to my laptop's brand support page and searched for my model there but I do not know where should I dl the drivers from.

So I managed to install the intel driver but my device manager still detects a problem with my Video Controller.

Also, despite the fact that my Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 is functioning properly now, something weird is happening with its app: whenever I try running it flashes for a second on the screen and auto closes immediately.

My screen resolution also switched to 1024x768 instead of the normal 1366x768. Seriously, what the actual fuck ?

laptops have brightness control shortcuts on the keyboard itself - FN key + some other one based on laptop.
(the rest is to ambiguous; dudes could even be using your graphics card to mine bitcoins )

- resolution gets down-scaled when refresh rate gets fixed at a higher value than default for some reason.
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

I have been playing with my brightness buttons all day long until I got the Win 10 upgrade, after that, it stopped working. I got the latest driver for my model but the problem persists.

hmm, have you tried the keyboard settings in wind.?; it has all kind of weird ones like filter-keys, sticky-keys ... etc. it might've override(-ridden?) the laptop default ones with some weird shortcuts.
go and disable them - control panel/ease of access/keyboard(or make the keyboard easier to use).

It is not a keyboard issue. That brightness virtual lever thing...(I don't know what the hell to call it...that thing that also moves when you increase or decrease the volume of the speakers)

My device manager notices me of this problem.

Have you checked that adaptive brightness is turned off? It will dim the screen considerably even when brightness is at "100%."

Problem: I play on MacBook air and the mouse cursor skips around while in game maybe 50% of the time. The funny thing is that i can´t find any reason for the skipping as some times everything runs really smoothly.

Thanks for the help in advance!
