I have two hard drives right now. I want to add a third to boot ubuntu off of, but no more SATA ports on my PSU. Here is a reference image for what the power port looks like on my PSU. | ||

So I've been playing Quake Champions Beta, quite a bit which has a FOV of 130 naturally, and it looks great on my 1080p 16: 9 ratio Monitor. However today I purchased LawBreakers and the Max FOV you can get is 110 and for some reason even that makes me nauseous when i play. So having studied up on FOV apparently console games can get a way with lower FOV because the Tv is further than a monitor typically is. Problem is i don't have the desk space to move my monitor back any further. Then i thought lets try windowed mode to play on a "smaller" screen. Anyway I did this and it felt much better, despite having the same 110 FOV. Though I was wondering what sort of resolution i should be using while playing windowed? Given my monitor can only do 1080p surely it would be best choose a smaller resolution. also What is the effect of playing windowed at a screens maximum resolution? Online people were saying that it creates lag due to the image having to be scaled down. While that sounds completely logical i really didn't experience any discernible lag. | ||

Normally I just play games in "fullscreen windowed" or "borderless windowed," and AFAIK there's not much difference from actual full screen gaming with some caveats. On W8 and above windowed games are forced into VSync, which potentially reduces tearing at the cost of slower frames. There's also virtually no sli/crossfire support for windowed gaming. In any event, a person's sensitivity to such things can vary quite a bit and the type of game you're playing also matters quite a bit. FPS games with lots of quick turns tend to have the most noticeable problems, while something like a MOBA would be much less so. | ||

If so thats very interesting. I will say when playing windowed and giving up an inch on all sides for the picture, it looked really good i thought despite it running in "1080p". Though yeah this FOV stuff really isn't an issue in SC2, or Mobas. Only FPS which i just recently started playing on the PC. I was surprised I was feeling it though. 110 is rather generous. I think Overwatch only goes to 100. If Vsync is automatically enabled in windowed that could lead to some lag as well, if you're computer can't output frames at the refresh rate of your monitor consistently. Which very well could be the case. I only have a mid tier computer with a 1060 Gtx, and a 7500k. Which is just fine for 60 frames in most games but i have a 144hz monitor so can't always stay above. Average 110 -140 ish. (Sidenote: the only times my new computer really dropped frames into the 50-40's was while playing SC2 campaign, when they flood you with units to see how long you can survive. I never realized how demanding Sc2 can be with higher graphics) Also ill have to check head bob next time i play lawbreakers. In Quake your head stays unnaturally level as you run, not strafing. Where as I know head bob was a problem for me playing Black ops on console, you bob up and down like you're riding a horse. | ||

I don't think FOV is applicable to games that aren't first person / over the shoulder since FOV is more about how far wide you can see, which is going to distort things a bit the farther out you go. RTS / MOBA games tend to only show you a fixed amount of the game no matter the resolution, with the only difference being the aspect ratio (difference aspect ratios see different things, but e.g. 16 : 9 at any resolution sees the same). | ||

Windows 8 and 10 force vsync in those modes which makes windowed and windowed fullscreen a lot laggier than fullscreen - win7 can opt out by changing some settings. Which very well could be the case. There is always significant added lag here, even just waving the mouse cursor in a circle. Can't overpower microsoft's questionable decisions with hardware unfortunately I never realized how demanding Sc2 can be with higher graphics SC2 is extremely CPU demanding on very few threads, it's graphically easy to run. It also runs much worse than the framerate counter would suggest because of a very odd frametime distribution~ I'm not sure how the rendering works for windowed mode that has been scaled, it might automatically be rendered at the resolution that the newly sized window takes up. If it's only taking up a 1600x900 area of your screen (1.2x less height and width than fullscreen) then it could be rendering @1600x900 or maybe you could manually set it to do so rather than manually resizing the window. There is more to FOV than just FOV, some other factors like the size of the player/weapon models make a big difference to comfort. Overwatch already feels more claustrophobic on a large/close monitor than other FPS games because of the FOV limit but it also forgets to adjust the player model scaling when you change the FOV.
