hey i have a new housemate my internet fucks in the evenings when hes at home (dota, 1 second ping)
here is the usage for the past 2 minutes:
Session Time 0day 00h:02m:00s Session Data Downloaded 55 MB Session Data Uploaded 2 MB
this is our net when he doesnt seem to be downloading for a minute: (edit: actually he must have been on it here, see other post)
(actually its better than that when he's not on it)
so technically he shouldn't be clogging up the internet right? why is my net fucked with 1 second ping on dota when he is using it?
i am using a wired connection after i got my cable today and no improvement
edit: ok i left it off for about 4 minutes and this is the first test before anyone else is using it again
ok well it looks like he went to bed after i turned it off lol so i'll have to see how it works tomorrow

Short answer, because bandwidth doesn't affect your ping, at least not until you run out of it. If you need 10kbps and can do 1 meg a second or 100 megs a second it's still the same.
What does matter is if your traffic is being delayed. If the total outgoing traffic exceeds your bandwidth at that moment then some of it is going to be delayed. In games you're using very little bandwidth, but it's important that it's sent and received immediately (i.e. real-time). Clearly, what's happening is that when he's using it your network's capacity is being exceeded and so your stuff is being delayed.
Look into what Quality of Service (QoS) options your router has. You may be able to set certain traffic as higher priority and others as lower. If that doesn't help enough, you may be able to limit a given user to a certain % of your bandwidth (e.g. if you restrict him to 80% then you should always have 20% available for you which would facilitate keeping your traffic real-time. Residential routers QoS tends to suck, so YMMV.

thanks i saw an option to enable Guest 5G 1 so perhaps that will segregate the traffic he went to bed i think after i turned off the router so can't test now

A guest network won't do what you want it. Both networks will still have access to the full bandwidth, just the guest network will be restricted as to what it can see on the main network (e.g. shared network folders). This is the linksys document on the subject. All you're getting is two separate networks that share all resources. http://www.linksys.com/gr/support-article?articleNum=140727
You need to either guarantee each person has a minimum amount of bandwidth always available or get your router to prioritize traffic to push real-time sensitive traffic ahead of the rest (i.e. enable and configured QoS). So long as both people get full bandwidth or there's no QoS, you're going to have this problem.

My ISP is Virgin and I am in Huddersfield and get at least 100mb down and 6mb up, 10ms ping. I didn't think that Virgin had slow plans like that, especially in at similar distance from a big city like Manchester.
What are your advertised speeds from Virgin?
If I were you I'd want to know more from my ISP.
Also, if you flat mate is taking up bandwidth torrenting movies just ask him to do it in the middle of the night or when no one is in.

Based on upload being the same in both usage cases he is likely not torrenting since there is no upload being used. More likely watching high quality video streamed. I could of course be wrong since torrenting doesn't always result in uploads due to no peers or leeching clients that don't upload.

just ran it now and
(no one else connected except for someones phone)
yeah i think he watches tv streams torrents you can limit uploads anyway

Recently had an issue that popped up with my PC, wanted to see if I could get some input. This thread kind of captures the issue taht I'm having (not my thread, but similar idea), and the fact that there isn't a readily available solution. In essence, recently when I've tried to watch twitch streams while also observing dota 2 games at the same time, i've either noticed significant fps drop in game or stutter in the twitch stream. I don't recall this being a major problem a couple of weeks ago, but I also didn't change anything in my setup recently. I checked CPU and ram performance and both are usually below 50%~ utilization.
Link to my build below:

Linked to thread describing similar problem from googling the issue

Any smoke detector experts? My smoke detector was chirping this morning so I replaced the batteries. It was still chirping so I googled and tried this: + Show Spoiler +Turn off the power to the smoke detector at your circuit breaker. Remove the detector from its mounting bracket and unplug the power supply. Remove the battery from the smoke detector. With the battery removed, press and hold the test button for 15-20 seconds.
and it's still chirping and I have no idea what to do.

Fixed mine with a hammer, not worth much as a smoke detector anymore, but it did great as a stress reliever. I know the ionization ones are prone to being easily set off, this also means that they tend to get ruined easier (accumulated dust or other contaminants).
I've heard of people hitting them with a duster can (like for pc's) and that fixing it, but could have just been dumb luck.

is there (TV) streaming service that would reduce my 60Mb/s internet down to like 4Mb/s (as shown above)??? or should i just assume my housemate is actually torrenting at max capacity or something (with uploads disabled coz otherwise it would show a hit to uploads)?
i ask coz i just opened like 5 streams and it barely made a dent on my speedtest (also didn't touch my dota ping)
on the other hand why would the router session log say only 55 mb downloaded in 2 minutes whilst dropping a 60Mb/s speedtest down to 4Mb/s? idk numbers
i will ask him to install netlimiter next time i see him anyway

I'm looking into getting a new monitor and waiting for Black Friday to see if there are any deals. My gpu is a gtx 1070 and my current monitor is only 60hz.
Do porn videos at 144hz exist that I can watch with a faster monitor? Seeing 60fps porn on my current monitor is great and all, but I think the realism has died down since I made that discovery years ago, and I am looking for something new and exciting. Ideally with a faster monitor everything would be much smoother and more lifelike.
I was looking at one of the dell monitors, the U2417dg, which comes equipped with g-sync as well. Will this prevent screen tearing in my porn too, or does it only work for games? It's also a 1440p monitor. Does much porn exist at that resolution? In addition it has a setting that supposedly reduces motion blur by strobing the backlight. Which of these two technologies would work better for my needs?
Many thanks appreciated!

I have a dual monitor setup with a msi gtx 980, yesterday my pc was working fine. Today it boots but the monitors stay black. I opened the case and the gpu seems to run fine, msi logo is glowing and the fan is spinning. I unplugged the monitors and plugged one to the onboard graphics slot, that worked fine, so its not the cables or the monitors. Is the graphics cards broken after all or could it be the psu too?

There's not even a good supply of 60fps porn, most is interpolated from ~24fps

wtf i just checked my router status and it said the past 3 days its downloaded 70,000 MB of data idk how this is possible since my housemate isnt even here most of the fucking time (and i get no lag when hes not here) i mean i might leave a stream on over night but 70 gigs? i guess 1 mb every 2 seconds for a night is a lot of dl......12 hours is 43200 seconds so that would be 21600 mb if a stream is 500ks...right?

8mbits (~ two max quality twitch streams plus a little extra) = 1MB/s = 3,600MB / hr
for 72 hours constantly that would be 259,200MB (253GB)
an average load of ~2.16mbits would get that amount downloaded in 72hrs if i did the math right

thank god for the internet
