Okay it's really nice to have that confirmed by someone who knows where to look. Thank u for your time
update: so the card is installed. its been running so well. Before I had a mix of med/high on starcraft 2 to stay in the 60c range. Now, on all ultra, It barley goes above 41 or 42. Witcher runs so much better now, I don't have to have low on everything. It uses less power.
thanks!

As somebody who just finished making their first computer, my only seemingly noticable problem is that after I shut down, the computer turns off normally, however my fans for the CPU and video card continue to keep running. Most likely a Motherboard/wiring issue?
MB is an Asrock 75, CPU is an i5 3330, video card is a Nvidia 960, and running on a Windows 8.1 OS.
would give a better description when I get home.

I recently reformatted my OS hard drive, so all the configurations I previously had set up are gone. I don't remember how I previously fixed the following problem (Win 7 home premium):
After Windows Update installs updates a message pops up asking me to reboot. If I'm not here the computer will reboot, which is not what I want. Further, it's annoying when the window pops up every 10 minutes or every 4 hours. I had my windows configured so that message would never pop up, and I'd simply have the windows update icon show up in the tray when the computer was ready for a reboot. How do I set it up like that again?
I tried googling for the method, but the solutions I found seem to do different things than what I described above. I'm aware I will still need to shutdown in order to install updates frequently.

Maybe this is what you're looking for.
Control Panel -> system and stuff --> under Windows Update you will see something like "turn off or on automatic updates" where you can Or you can get there the other way: + Show Spoiler + Click Start, type Windows update in the search box, and then click Windows Update in the Programs list. In the left pane, click Change settings. Select the option that you want. Under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates or Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates check box, and then click OK.
I have it turned off as I'm myself deciding when the updates should be downloaded and installed.

You probably had it set to auto-download, but don't install.

Is there a program that lets you run games in windowed mode if they don't have it built in?

I'm considering replacing the rented cable modem/router that Comcast supplies. The one Comcast supplied was the Technicolor 8305C, which apparently had some issues with an update last Fall. (It causes some problems with streamed media, but it hasn't been a huge issue until the last month or so so that's why I'm only now doing something.) One option is to get a replacement from Comcast, but I'm also looking at just getting my own since then I wouldn't be paying the equipment fee.
Are there any particular brands/models which are considered more reliable, or others which I should definitely avoid? Comcast has a long list (here, my account is "Performance" tier) of compatible equipment but I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm familiar with the Netgear and Motorola brandnames but I don't recognize most of the others. Unless there's a good reason not to, I would prefer a combined modem/wireless router unit.

I recently bought new ram, like an idiot I didn't check to see if it was compatible with my ASUS Sabertooth Z77 mobo. The ram is rated for 2133mhz (which I now realize is not needed) but runs at 1927~ mhz (originally ran at 1377mhz, before I manually set it to 2133mhz, but when I restarted my pc BIOS states the 1927mhz.)
My pc works fine for the most part, I did notice a freeze the other day but my pc corrected itself and was fine after about a minute of trouble, and that is the only incident I have had. Should I go ahead and get ram that is listed in my Z77 manual or do you think I will be okay running the current RAM I have?
|
Well, your mobo can serve only DDR3 at 1866/1600/1333 clocks, so I would buy something in that range. Not sure exactly how wrong is that, never really happened to me.

1927 shouldn't happen AFAIK unless your base clock is at some weird value. Make sure it's set to 100.0mhz or very close (+-1mhz)
you can underclock RAM easily if neccesary

Hi ! In my computer, often video players stutter bizarely, they play and every second go back like 100ms before or so. It's really annoying, any idea what can cause that ?

you can underclock RAM easily if neccesary So, I actually forgot one thing I did. After installing the ram and noticed it ran below spec. I proceeded to manually set the clock to 2133mhz, then I ran the Asus AI overclock tuner and then the PC restarted to show the 1927mhz. This brought my overclock to 4.22 GHZ on my CPU but that's only when I select the turbo mode on BIOS. I almost always run my PC at the stock value from bios. Not sure if this has any bearing. I will take a look at the base clock. Thank you for your reply <3

Right, so my setup is like this:
Ilyama E2473HDS -- BenQ XL2411Z - PC
I have my Ilyama monitor connected to my video card (GTX 970) through HDMI, and my BenQ through DVI-D for the high refresh rates, obviously.
I tried plugging my headphones in through the 3.5mm jack in my Ilyama, but the sound volume is very low, too low. So now I'm forced to use the front jack in my case which is BARELY long enough and is really uncomfortable.
The connector in the monitor that I'm connecting to is a 3.5mm line-in jack though. The green, speaker jack doesn't give any sound at all. What could be the issue here and is it resolveable? I checked windows audio panel and fixed everything there.

then I ran the Asus AI overclock tuner
You should manually OC or not OC at all if you're concerned for stability, performance and/or longevity

way too high DPC latency can, you can check yours with www.thesycon.de/dpclat/dpclat.exe
power saving settings on CPU especially can cause it to be elevated sometimes, but there's often a driver or something messing stuff up. ~20 is a great number to have there, it should preferably be below 100 all of the time but i don't see clearly visible symptoms like video's stuttering constantly until 1k+

Does it means anything ?

if you're stuttering while it's at like 100, it should be fine

I have a few devices that don't play well with USB 3.0 ports, so I was wondering: would the devices be compatible with a USB 3.0 hub if it had 2.0 ports on it? Hopefully that makes sense. (Hub with male 3.0 connector, 2.0 female ports)

Got a question on some stuttering issues I'm having playing Dirty Bomb on Steam. I understand the game is in BETA, which I guess could be part of the problem, but I'm not seeing streamers have these issues so thought I'd ask. If this isn't the place to ask I apologize.
Dirty Bomb's recommended settings & what I have:
512 MB - GeForce 7800 GTX or better - 1GB GeForce 9800GT 2.0 GHz Quad Core or better - AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 840T Processor 2.9GHZ 3GB Ram - 6.2GB Windows 7 64Bit - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit
I've got in-game settings turned to low on everything, camera animations off etc etc. I'm seeing a ton of stuttering to the point that I can't play the game because I'm glitching around so much. For internet speed 29.32 Down and 31 Up with 16ms ping. Image below from speedtest.net.
My FPS counter from Steam is showing huge jumps, ranging from 86fps to 27 as the game starts and gets going and consistently bounces around with those extremes, sometimes sitting for a second around 30fps.
Is this just a case of my video card going bad or something else I need to look into? Thanks in advance I really appreciate it, and again if this is the wrong place to post this please let me know or let me know where to post it!

there was a talk in here about streams stopping seemingly random but i can't find it now. so to whomever - i found out that my foobar2000 with the output on WASAPI stops streams really fast (i'm using a mozzila based browser(portable))

these days, how important or useful is it to have 16gb memory? is 8gb still generally sufficient?
