Can you get decent signal on the floor above the basement? If so, then a repeater would help.

Just periodically block her device/s from router for a short time ;p

that's the most evil thing one can do though

i'm guessing btw that quality of router means that cable signal strength is better? i'm using a crappy router we got from our ISP and since my room is quite far away from the router, I sometimes get dropped by my router for 10s or so.

wireless strength varies with router, range, interference etc but w/ ethernet you should have ~0-1ms pings to router and no packet loss

Yes ethernet offers the best speed, ~94% of the total speed.

WLAN gets ~60% of the total speed but If you dont downloads movies or whatever you shouldnt care about packet loss at all. My WLAN gets 4Mbit and I can watch a twitch stream on source or netflix on high fluently (netflix's source means Ultra HD). I have ~30ms ping but I dont care about it and I dont play fps games at all.

My signal strength is always at 3/5 and is super safe, I have never seen a drop.

Packet loss is actually important for a smooth web browsing experience as well as VOIP, gaming etc. It's a huge red flag on a network connection

I would even go so far as to argue that downloads like movies are where the effect of packet loss is the least important. Even in streaming video (Netflix, YouTube) you're buffering and thus the effect of packet loss is diminished. With streaming live content it becomes much more noticeable because there is minimal buffering available.

A lost packet basically means you have to wait for the timeout period and send another request for the data. In terms of downloading files, that just means things take a bit longer and use a bit more bandwidth, but those aren't real-time sensitive.

Meanwhile things like VOIP and games are extremely real-time sensitive, so the delay caused by packet loss becomes very noticeable.

I used a repeater at a different house and it literally made 0 difference. And I understand how it works: you place the repeater in a spot far away from the router, but not so far away that you're at the edge of the wifi zone. It was in a good spot where you could get full wifi speeds with any other device. And it wouldn't expand the network in the slightest.

Maybe I needed a better one but paying $40 for nothing was annoying. Access points need to be wired and I can't do that... so meh, maybe I'll just say we need to get her house wired and I'll buy a fancy access point.

The thought is that if you can get a decent signal in the room above the router, but not in the surrounding rooms or floor above it, then you could put the repeater there (or high on the wall/ceiling) to improve the upper floor reception.

There's not really a way to tell you if it would or wouldn't work on the Internet. Technicians would normally measure the signal strength and inference in a particular area to determine what was feasible (e.g. using the app I mentioned before). As to what measurements tell you to do what, I couldn't say; my Cisco days were almost a decade ago and we didn't cover that 8).

Looks like I'm getting noise from the rear case fan.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 Mid Tower ATX Case (RC-912-KKN1)

I'll try removing it and cleaning it, but if it fails, what would be a replacement fan I can order that would be able to replace it? Should I replace the forward fan at the same time (that one seems more annoying to pull out).

Edit: yeah it looks like I should replace both case fans

Basically the fans don't just make a uniform hum... they make a high frequency clicking noise. As I expected, cleaning the dust off didn't help. At least now I know how to easily remove/insert the case fans! I just don't want to get fans that won't work, but I suspect the one recommended to me a few pages ago for the CPU cooler will work fine for the front and the back of the case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835709037

Will it?

Sometimes you can peel the sticker off, pry open the cap, and add some (appropriate) oil into the bearings that can help with such issues. Sometimes the fan is just cruddily made and falling into disrepair, though. Can't expect too much from the cheapies they bundle with relatively cheap cases.

Anyway, you're looking at 120 mm fans, so if you're getting a replacement, let's see...

That old deal expired. The Phanteks would work, but I think you can do a little bit better. Also, you would need to be sure to have fan speed control somewhere (not all headers on all mobos support that), as the max (default) speed there is 1800 rpm, which is into the "howler" range.

For the back exhaust, an Antec TrueQuiet should be a good option for only $10, as something that should work decently and have reasonable acoustics:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835209050

You could use it as a front intake, but their ability to move air when up against restrictions (front mesh, drive cages) is relatively poor. You could go with a trusty Nexus Basic for the front if really inspired (though $12, not an amazing price for it):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835610006

Possible alternatives under $15 or so: Zalman F3, Deepcool UF120, Fractal Design GP12, Cougar Vortex.

If I get the Antec TrueQuiet for the back, and the Nexus Basic for the front, do I still need to worry about fan speed control? I have no idea if that is available on my mobo for the case fans.

I did previously watch a video on youtube showing how you can open up and oil fans, but I don't want to get involved with that, considering how cheap fans are.

If you're buying quiet fans, you shouldn't particularly need fan speed control - pretty much all motherboards these days support pwm control, but the pwm control is based on the core temperature of the CPU which isn't very useful for effectively cooling a case. Your fans would be on a lot when not necessary and off a lot while necessary using cpu core temperature PWM controls, so 100% fan or manual control for when you want to turn them down is better

All the models I mentioned run at 1000 rpm or thereabouts (full speed), which for a 120 mm fan is fine for most people. Cooler Master seems to claim the original fans run at 1200 rpm, though honestly these better models should be quieter at the same rpm so even if they were 1200 rpm they probably would be better than the originals.

These fan models all do not support PWM control, but that's probably not an issue.

Pretty much every single motherboard supports PWM control for the CPU fan based on CPU fan speed. For the other headers, it's a total mess. For some motherboards, some or all of the others support fan voltage control. For others, some or all of the others support PWM control on the fans. Or both. And remember that some headers might have no control and only speed sensing. And usually if there's control, it's based on CPU temperatures. Potentially with custom fan curves. Or not. Or actually modern Asus models allow for control based on temperatures other than the CPU, like the chipset. Anyway, there's no standardization and features frequently aren't even listed anywhere (though it should be apparent enough if you load to the UEFI).

I got today a win10 symbol bottom right. It seems I can download it now (I use win7). Can I use win10 on my 5 years old pc (amd x6 1055t, gtx 460) and later on new pc OR better to save it for a new pc?

If you buy a new PC with windows before win10 is released it will get the same free upgrade.

so the symbol thing says that windows 10 is reserved until its available (which isn't uintil the end of June). I signed up to have it reserved. Is there any reason not to install windows 10 when its available?

also anyone know what happens with computer themes when you upgrade OS systems?

Mostly user preference and compatibility of software. Can be worth it to wait for security vulnerabilities to appear and be patched. The bulk of things should still work fine on W10.

I never do an actual upgrade, just a clean install either reformatting the OS drive or letting it be moved to Windows.old. As far as an upgrade-only Windows is concerned, you just need to have a previous version installed; you don't have to follow the actual upgrade path.
