there's "system idle time" which is eating up CPU resources
That's the process that measures how much the CPU is idle. It's supposed to be as high as possible

I have a core 2 duo at 3.0 GHz 2x2 gb of DDR2 RAM but the system only detects 3 for some reason (upgraded from 2x0.5 Gb) a fresh windows 7 install the gtx 560 ti i bought when I don't install the nvidia drivers I can make boxes on desktops with 0 lag. when I DO install nvidia drivers i have major stuttering and lag on desktop, regardless of what scheme I'm using (aero or not). it did this when the computer still only had 1 Gb of RAM total I'm really not sure what's going on. I want to blame the HDD however crystaldisk says the drive is healthy and also these problems don't occur when graphic drivers aren't installed i know the graphics card works perfectly since i used in my own rig for a couple of weeks without any problems whatsoever as for drivers, I've tried most recent drivers, 314.22 drivers and 301.xx drivers all laggy. all i know is that CPU usage spikes. system idle process goes from 880-90% to 50%, then back up etc. i'm not sure what's eating up CPU resources. idk anymore ![]()

You can go to the Resource Monitor CPU tab and sort by average CPU load. On a clean system you can get it below 1% average load (i've got a screenshot of average cpu load reading 0.00% on every single process, after killing a few and waiting for fun ![]() if there's anything spiking and getting high CPU load, it'll show up there. You should also download Latencymon and take a look at your DPC latency. ~20 constantly is very good. ~100-200 is acceptable. Spikes to 5k are very bad and can probably cause those symptoms. I had very bad problems with DPC latency caused by the nvidia driver that were odd and intermittent, but they seem to be gone now. It might have been setting pci-e to 2.0 instead of 3.0 that fixed that, but i would previously completely remove drivers with an uninstaller from safe mode and then unplug internet, restart into regular windows and install latest driver that i downloaded previously. I did that probably a dozen times while trying to diagnose it, and i do it for new driver versions now because nvidia and AMD are not very good at writing software.

I'll download that program, look around at BIOS options and try to get a solid idea of what's eating up CPU resources. Thanks for the tips. E: lol i'm clueless again there's nothing eat up cpu resources yet i think that one of the two cores is at 100% constantly? http://imgur.com/EEEwCNC,EISBfMR

yeah i'm between 2000 and 5000 most of the time, with huge spikes going to google fixes for that. strange that it does this with three different nvidia drivers. i'm on the right track thanks to you though!

Power Saver is the one to avoid. That setting tries to pin your hardware at minimum clocks and shows a lot of resistance to ramping CPU up when you need it. Performance is good for troubleshooting and benchmarking, but ideally not what you would run 24/7 especially on an overclocked CPU

The picture looks like there's a bracket attached to the side of the heatsink which the fan screws into like it would screw into a case. If that's right then replacing it should be trivial. You could also try adjusting the tightness of the fan on the heatsink (loosen it like a quarter turn) and see if that helps.

How do I acquire a new fan if I want to reuse the heatsink?
