3rd-party hardware I guess, upon further inspection:

Press may or may not have something similar, provided by Nintendo to do reviews. Not sure how that works.

Helping someone figure out why their computer is blue screening, and from what I can gather its bad ram and possibly a dying hdd. I ran memtest several times, and there are always errors on the second pass on. I tried all sorts of test to see if other components are at fault and the only time the blue screen happens is during installation of programs or other things that involve disc write.

I tried running the a dos version of the seagate diagnostic tools on the hdd to confirm but for whatever reason it cant identify the hdd, but the windows chkdsk did find corrupt sectors. The blue screen / errors are consistent in that it says kernel data inpage error or things related to corrupt data at certain address ranges. Any ideas?

I'd say Nvidia, but only because their drivers consume less of the CPU's resources. It's pretty much even and for running games such as those, you won't need a high-end graphics card. At that price range, the AMD deals become quite nice.

Not certain if it's a factor for performance for those games or not without someone benchmarking it

I just bought a new laptop (msi gt60) and it comes with a 128 gb ssd (windows 8.1 installed on the ssd) and a 1 TB 7200 RPM. I need a quick answer on what you guys think I should do? I'm about to install SC2 and it's asking me what drive to put it on.. Should I just put it on the ssd?

Well that depends on whether you have more important things to put on the SSD...

Just picked up the laptop today, the ssd only has 50 gigs left free (win 8.1 plus MSI bloatware take rest stock) In the future I plan to put adobe cs5, plus all my web developing tools(which aint much)

I'm reading up on an article online talking about ssd's and one thing they mention is that you always wanna leave some free space for the ssd to operate efficiently. so with my 128 gb ssd, what amount should I leave?

I think for programs that you're going to use a lot, like SC2, the SSD is fine to use. Just ask yourself if it's a program that you're going to use often. If so, SSD, if not, HDD.

I'm guessing a 75% full SSD should be fine.

Right, here's a question. Imagine I'm working on a written report for example. I'm using word and I have two .pdf files open for example, as well as a web-page. Would a small program exist that would allow me to take a "snapshot" of the open files / programs. I could then use that snapshot to open all the relevant files / programs again after a break or something.

Wouldn't that be nifty as fuck?

My laptop has normally had some heating issues, but blowing some compressed air in the fans usually does the trick. Lately though, it hasn't. I'm averaging around 90-100 celsius playing Heroes of the Storm and just now SC2 kept me around 95 C for a short 10 minute game. This is obviously way too hot. My computer shuts off at 105 C, which it will do if I play Heroes for more than 25 minutes in a row.

I know it's hard to diagnose over the internet... but is it likely an issue with the CPU heatsink becoming loose? I might take it to a Toshiba service centre here in Korea and see if they will reset it for me.

When I first got the laptop I had no issues for about 6-7 months, even playing SC2 on higher graphics settings without much issue. Then it just started overheating like a bitch one day after I moved apartments. I figure maybe something shook loose that day and it's just gotten worse and worse over time...

Probably a loose heatsink or fan going bad.

By the way, blowing compressed air into the stuff without holding the fan down (so it can't spin) is bad for it.

Really? Why would it be bad for it? I often make the fans spin as I'm cleaning dust out of them.

It's because the motor within is using electricity to generate motion. Blowing compressed air onto it to make it spin would switch that process around (using motion to generate electricity) and this has the potential to damage the motor.

The back emf. An outside mechanical force causing the blades to spin induces current in the coils. (motors being the opposite of generators and so on) Think of regenerative breaking on hybrid and electric cars, except that here the circuits aren't designed or intended to have this current coming at them from this treatment.

Also, if somehow you spin the blades really, really fast or otherwise in directions they're not intended to handle, that would be bad for them too.

How bad is it? I have no idea. This is mostly just mindless general knowledge.

edit: whoops, went to do something else, came back to post. shows me.

Thanks for the responses. I did one final blow out through the fan, anchoring it down with a pin. I did get a couple big bursts of dust shoot out which was promising. I also moved stuff away from the back of the laptop. It seems to be running a bit cooler now, about 5-10 degrees when I'm just on the desktop.

If it's still a problem in more intense games (SC2/Heroes/D3) I'll back up my shit and take it to the Toshiba centre. :/
