It starts and functions well for around half an hour then freezes. It doesn't respond to any command keys, only the manual emergency shut down (pressing for 3+ seconds) get it out of the state. (I let it sit for 1+ hour to see if it unfreezes). I installed a clean copy of windows and it reverted back to the original state within 1 week with 10 hours of usage. I ran the suggested diagnostic tools by windows and it didn't detect the problem. This started happening after I lent it to a "friend" who most likely miss used it (leaving it on for the entire time he had it or unprotected porn sites)... Are there any specific parts that I could switch out to see if it was a single issue? I am pretty familiar with taking it apart (switched HD on it once).

Not a software/virus issue if it still happens on completely fresh install, and leaving it on for a bit wouldn't harm anything, don't blame your friend ![]() Maybe driver or related to some temperature

Not a big deal, even if I want to help him out more there isn't anything I can do know what I mean? I'll still probably visit him at the joint. Is there a diagnostic where I can figure out where or which parts are dealing with temperature issues? If it isn't a motherboard problem isn't it pretty easy to swap it out? I intended to use the laptop for my senior year, is there an efficient way to fix it or should I just start to save up for a pad or another laptop?

I'm guessing a good virus removing program should help solve this issue, but I'm not sure what a good program would be. Fdisk then Format. Best to take off and nuke it from orbit; it's the only way to be sure. Actually, google searching for answers suggested just a normal antivirus but then google searching for virus removal programs is often a great way to wind up downloading a new and more pernicious virus.

Didn't do Fdisk so taht's probably why. The way the virus works I think is that it goes from computer to pen drive, then from pen drive to computer. Your computer gets the virus and then every pen drive or external HDD which gets plugged in then becomes infected. That's how I think it works. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-633595-how-to-remove-recycler-virus-from-my-drive That "seems" to have fixed it for me, not 100% sure but at least 90% sure. E: So for the record, this anti-virus, "Ad-aware Free Antivirus+" is crap which didn't detect shit apart from the different crypto-currency wallets I had on my computer. http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Malwarebytes Anti-Malware seems to have done the trick.

Yeah, the problem with a virus like that is that it can stick on any external media you connect - so if you don't clean err'thing it's got a decent chance of popping up again like a cockroach. (Funny story - during nasty worm outbreak in the early 00's, this meant that I even had to wipe the printer server on our network because it wound up infected.) That... doesn't sound like a decent antivirus. I've been going with just Microsoft's Security Essentials, and it has worked out okay for me. Then again, I'm less likely to engage in "risky behavior" - always use protection with unknown USB storage!

I have close to no experience with anti-viruses, generally I don't use any at all and just make sure not to click / download dumb shit. it's been working out for me for the most part, except for this problem which came from the pen drive. Does MS Security Essentials come with windows? Should I fire that up? Or do you download that?

I'm actually asking for myself because I also don't use an anti-virus and thought stuff like this will get blocked and has to ask for elevation before it can manage to install itself.

Would this Lenovo Y40 be suitable for LoL/Hearthstone? I'm searching for gaming laptops around a $800 budget for my brother who's going to university soon, and I'm trying to look for a laptop that can maintain LoL @50~60 FPS on low settings. The specs seem fine to me, but I'm more familiar with desktop hardware than laptop hardware so I'd rather get some more input from others.
