You need more ram. What is happening is when SC2 loads it forces all other programs and windows into virtual memory (which is located on your hard drive, a lot slower than RAM). When SC2 closes, your previous programs and windows are sitting in virtual memory. This makes accessing them extremely slow until they get moved back into physical ram (which takes time also).
The solution is to add another 2GB of ram. XP won't be able to access all 4GB (it will use about 3.5) because it is only a 32 bit OS but it will still eliminate the performance problems you describe.
That would be my guess is that during that time it's moving the ram that was put on your hdd back onto the much faster dram and so you're running on hdd speed which is never too fast. I mean sc2+chrome and i tunes would take up all 2 gigs pretty easily. Does this still happen if you open it up for 1 min then close the program?
