I heard it's suppose to compete with the 6950's (or was it the 6870?) and it's going to blow the 6950 out into space. Should i return my 6950 2gb and get that new card? (and thank ze lord for fry's return policy)

if it has 448 shader cores it's going to be way better than 560 ti and 6950 and because of 6950s price point, I'd say it's possible that the new card will make 6950 totally obsolete for everything other than multi-gpu

The 448 variant is just a GTX 570 with gimped shaders so yes it's going to outperform the 6950 by a decent margin. Nvidia is just getting ready for the Radeon HD7000 launch.

Hyia guys and girls, currently buying my computer, bought some parts, though vendors raised certain concerns as I went about my business, raising several questions that I would like answered before I proceed.

First mobo is bought, G-B H61M-USB3, RAM is bought, 8gb of 1333 G.Skill Ripjaws-X, cheapy dvd drive is bought, BF3 is bought (very important ), now some concerns.

Asking vendors between i5 2400 and 2500, I was told by one to just get 2400 if im budgeting, and 2500k if i wanted to future proof? Is that about right?

Next concern is that of me wanting to originally use a mini tower (CM elite 341) however both vendors raised the concern that a Radeon HD 6950 might not fit. I would like opinions on this, as me having asked a few times if these parts are all compatible have so far just been positive.

Another concern raised was that the Antec neo eco 450 would not be enough for the set up in question. Please give me your opinions on this. For a fair bit more I can buy a neo eco 520.

Finally I want a cheap keyboard (currently I use a laptop and therefore the shit keypad it has, and it has not really been an issue for SC2, so I imagine even a cheap but sturdy keyboard would be good for now) in a pretty low price range, opinions on this would be appreciated. I dont need crazy hotkeys and the like.

Alright that should be it for now, thank you for reading, I await responses with bated breath xD

EDIT: One vendor suggested I get a aresze darkcoder 7203B case, I can find absolutely nothing on it.

If you provided information on what you already bought to the vendors than they're idiots and just trying to upsell to you. If you did not than you left out vital information for them. The 2500k has an unlocked multiplier for overclocking but to take advantage of this, you need a P67 or Z68 motherboard. So with a H61 motherboard, it is suggested you get a non-K suffix processor since these have limited overclocking potential and H61 boards simply do not allow you to overclock at all regardless of having a non-K or K suffix processor.

The reference 6950 is nearly eleven inches long, some models are longer. Looking at the Coolermaster Elite 341's interior, it does look like there is adequate space for the card.

The Antec Neo Eco 450C is enough for such a configuration. A core i5 2400 consumes around 50w under load and a 6950 consumes around 170w under load. Such a configuration will have a hard time exceeding 300w under maximum load (which is not possible through gaming)

Alright thank you skyr, yes I was aware of the fact that id need a diff mother board for the 2500k. I will get the psu tomorrow, i5 2400 I guess, and will look at alternative cases. Any cases that are reliable, not too expensive, relatively light weight?

Lighter weight means flimsier, more prone to vibrations, less sound dampening, and so on, but it's cheaper and...weighs less obviously. Elite 341 is a relatively popular cheap case that's pretty light. If that's what you're looking for, then I don't see a reason to get anything else, unless you need room for more hard drives than that case supports.

Again the only reason I would not get it is because it might not fit the graphics card (radeon 6950) which is why I am asking xD

Hey guys, it's been about 4 months since my previous post (found here). I'm ready to order real soon; hopefully this Thursday. I have an even better idea of what I want now and am looking to fine tune the build. I am 100% set on my HD/SSD, though I will read your futile attempts to convince me otherwise anyway. I am happy with my cpu, mobo, psu, ram, and disk drive, but am definitely open to ideas. Not really sure on the video card or case, so definitely looking for input there.

What is your budget? About $1350.

What is your resolution? 1600x1200 dual monitors (so 3200x1200 effective).

What are you using it for? This is my primary home PC. I use it for all sorts of development (programming, running apache/mysql, VMWare, image/audio/video editing), heavy media usage, as well as occasional gaming. At least for now, before I get a true server, it will also function as my primary data repository. As such it will store music, videos, log files, my personal documents, and any other miscellaneous content I want to keep.

What is your upgrade cycle? It's been 7 years since I got my last computer. I like to do it right once and keep a working machine for a long time. I do plan on making slight 'adjustments' to it over time though. First will be to upgrade the ram to 2x8gb (thus the cheap placeholder memory you will see below), and second to add a second duplicate HD for raid 1 storage.

When do you plan on building it? I'd like to order this thursday 2011/12/01 ideally, or sometime in the coming weeks.

Do you plan on overclocking? No. Not for me.

Do you need an Operating System? Hmm. Probably not. I'm pretty resourceful and can imagine finding Windows 7 for cheap or free. It would be important to know if I could install Windows XP in the meantime though. If I can't, just getting a new OS right away may be more important.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No. Also not for me.

Where are you buying your parts from? Wisconsin USA. I've used newegg mainly in the past but really have NO preference regarding that -- assuming the place has a good reputation. That being said, I have specced out most/all of a build on newegg so ordering from there does seem likely.

Dual output is a necessity for my dual 1600x1200 monitors. I do play new games, but not that much anymore. And I do work with image/video editing, but only rarely. Thus I want something decent and capable, yet definitely want to try to "save" money here. I picked that card because I heard ATI is the way to go with AMD mobos, but it does seem to be a bit mediocre.

Case: A few ideas:

IN WIN Dragon Rider Black 1.0 - 0.8mm SECC Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
AZZA Hurrican 2000 CSAZ-2000 Black SECC Japanese Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
It's gotta fit everything, and it's gotta look badass. Those are some ideas. Definitely dig the black w/ blue color scheme with my electronics.

Sound Card: Do I have any need for one of these given my motherboard?

Sorry for the length. I just tried to be detailed. Thanks for any comments.

You do not need a Caviar Black if you are getting an SSD. If you just want to use the HDD for storage, you can get a Caviar Green or another slow HDD instead. If you want a 7200 RPM HDD, you should pay for a Caviar Blue or Seagate Barracuda - it makes no sense to pay a huge premium for two extra years of warranty on the Caviar Black.

One performing better on one platform (eg. Radeon on AMD) is just a stupid myth. That card doesn't have dual outputs.... and it's extremely overpriced. I'm not sure why you thought this is reasonable? A Radeon 6870 can be had for less and outperforms a 5570 by miles and can support up to six monitors.

Why the hell are you getting a HX850 if you are not interested in a multi-GPU setup or overclocking and not picking a $1000 graphics card? You realize such a low-end configuration is barely going to exceed 200w under load?

An Phenom II X6 1100T is a terrible choice - even for multi-threaded applications. A core i5 2400 is similarly priced - it will destroy it in gaming and perform similar to it in multi-threaded applications. Not to mention H61 and H67 motherboards are sub $100.

Your budget is so large, you can easily get 2x4gb of memory since they're $30-$40...

Samsung 470 is old and at $200 for 128gb, it's not a very appealing option. The Samsung 830 is newer/faster and is similarly priced, same with the Crucial M4.

TLDR - you did poor research and your entire build needs to be changed.

^^hmm glad I had decided to wait on the 560 ti until next paycheck now!

While not necessarily a Comp build question I just wanted some opinions. Is there any reason I shouldn't get the OEM version of Windows 7? I'm not planning on swapping motherboards in the future so I can't really see any reason why I shouldn't. (Aside from the added security if something goes wrong with my current one I wouldn't have to get a new copy of 7. Amazon has the full version for 160 or so right now and while its cheaper than normal I'd rather not spend the extra $60 unless someone gives me a logical reason otherwise!)
I have a question...

There is no reason why you should not get the OEM version of any operating system. The OEM license can be used over and over again, Microsoft doesn't care. Getting the full retail version is just really for ethical reasons...

Thanks for the reassurance. I am currently running a few "less than ethical" copies of CS/MS but figured I'd go somewhat legit with the new build. All of my OS have been preinstalled so I've never had to deal with buying one before.

Also to those looking for CPU/MoBo. I believe MicroCenter is still doing a pretty good sale of $60 off if you buy together, and their i5 is still 180.
I have a question...

It's suppose to replace the GTX 560 Ti but it's probably going to start around $250 - $300 initially.

And yes it will be the third GTX 560 Ti. Nvidia's naming decisions never did make sense.

Well, the other one is GTX 560 rather than GTX 560 Ti.

I'm pretty sure they don't want to call it a GTX 565, even though that's pretty much what it is (3rd config of GF110, where GTX 465 was 3rd config of GF100...granted, GTX 565 active hardware is pretty much a GTX 470, so that's not bad at all).

Mine does have the cutout thankfully, im looking at this coolermaster hyper 212 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

Any thoughts on this hsf? also what about thermal compounds?

Hyper 212+ is fine. It comes with a small tube of Coolermaster's own thermal compound so don't buy a separate tube.

Quick question,

With an i5 processor, HD 5770 video card, 8 gig ram, and dedicated to recording 7200 rpm HDD, would I be able to record HD video decently well? [720p].
