I have a quick question.... How do I know if heatsink/fan will fit in my case/mobo?

Case and Mobo are in this bundle: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.644166

HSF that I am looking at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233082
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

For both of the HSF, people are saying that it is huge and that it might not fit in all cases.

Yes it'll fit, you could have just searched the reviews or googled it...

Yeah, on page 13 of newegg reviews, somebody used a CM Hyper 212 Plus (approx. 160mm tall, pretty much same as the Xigmatek and most tower coolers that use 120mm fans). The heatsinks you're looking at are the standard height for aftermarket cooling these days, but a whole lot narrower than the high-end models.

Many cheaper and particularly older cases are narrower and won't fit the 160mm tall coolers.

Hey, I've narrowed down my monitor choices to three (barring any better suggestions):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889150005
Best in size
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236103
Best in picture quality
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009269
Best in price, the one I'm leaning towards at the moment.

Does anyone have advice for or against any of these models?

Also, could someone recommend a keyboard / mouse? SC II and Skyrim are probably going to be the main games I play.

All huge monitors have pretty horrid pixel density. If your eyesight isn't bad, I'd advise against getting a 1080P 32" monitor.

Unless you absolutely need a TV tuner, which you don't seem to need as the ASUS VE278Q doesn't have one, you are better off getting a smaller 1080P monitor in 23"/24" range and simply sitting closer. With $350, you can buy a Dell U2412 IPS straight from their store with an education/military coupon or two and it will be mindblowing compared to those two monitors.

hey Jornundr, I've seen a 32" TV as a computer screen in action and it sucks. The reason why is pretty basic, but it's easy to miss if you don't think about it.

"Full HD" TVs are 1080p, which means 1920x1080 pixels make up the screen. Regular "HD" TVs are 1280x720 I think. Pixels, are, of course, the individual little lights that make up a monitor. So the larger the monitor the larger the pixels.

But hey, you say, big HD TVs look great! Yes, they do. But not for displaying text, which needs a better resolution to not be blurry and then unreadable. The big pixels makes text fuzzy. And unless you're watching TV, you use text for EVERYTHING. Even in SC2 you have chat, resource number in the upper screen, etc. It's incredibly frustrating when BASIC functions don't work well on a computer, or require you to move closer and burn out your eyes on an incredibly bright TV screen.

Don't get me wrong, a 32" 1080p tv will work, it just won't work well. You're better off getting a cheaper 24-27" 1080p monitor and a similar-sized 720p TV if you really really want a big-screen. (Or saving for a better one.) If you're really on a budget you can gamble on a used screen from amazon. Plus then you can load up media like SC2 major tournament streams on the big-screen .

There's a reason 30" monitors are so expensive - they're 2560x1600 (or something like that) resolution because at larger than 27" 1080p just isn't good enough for a monitor. Flagship + sheer number of pixels = $. But a better resolution than even 50" TV screens.

Took me awhile to figure that out. Often, bigger just isn't better for monitors.

I recently bought an i5 2500k and tried it out in a new build without a hard drive. The thing booted up to BIOS and I had it there for 5 minutes when I realized that the stock cooler fan wasn't rotating. I turned it off and and tried moving the fan manually but it won't rotate freely. I assume this means the fan is broken.

Question 1: Did this damage the cpu? The motherboard supposedly has some thing where it will turn off if the cpu gets too hot.

Question 2: Should I just try to return the cpu and stock cooler to Newegg and get a replacement? Or is this not a legitimate reason for returning?

Build:

i5 2500k
Biostar TP67B+
Antec Earthwatts 500W
G Skill Sniper 8GB
XFX Radeon HD 6870
Rosewill Challenger Case

yeah I hooked it up to the cpu_fan1 or whatever it's called, and it's the fan that came with the i5 that isn't working.

I wasn't going to overclock right away so the stock fan would have been fine... had it worked.

Is the i7-970 worth the price over the i7-2500k??

I am in the process of looking to piece together a new comp, I am basing it around the things I hate with mine but I actually do not know what causes the things I hate, so any insight is appreciated!

I hate when I alt+tab to firefox with SC2, my stream on, skype and Pandora running that its not instantaneous. What hardware prevents me from doing that kinda stuff with ease? what exactly causes this?

No, it is worse in almost every possible way.
1) it costs more
2) it performs pretty much the same as the i7-2600k
3) all its peripherals cost more (mobos at $300? O.o)
4) it has no upgrade path, while the 2600k conceptually you can swap out for an ivy bridge i7 when it comes out.

alt+tab speed, loading applications, etc. have to do with moving data around mostly. You want more memory (RAM) and/or possibly an SSD. For loading applications and general system responsiveness, you really want an SSD. It won't help gaming performance, but it'll prevent your really fast processor twiddling its thumbs waiting on drive access all the time, in a lot of normal computer usage.

For the things you described, an i5-2500k ($220) would be just as good as the i7-2600k ($315). You're not doing anything, even with all those things put together, that would benefit from the hyperthreading (the advantage the i7-2600k has over the i5-2500k).

For your purposes, the i5-2500k would be faster than the i7-970.

It comes with its own thermal paste that is sufficient.
