Actually, I will run SC2 in windowed mode so you can't select a resolution. does that change anything?

You can probably get away with a i5-2400, particularly if you cut down the fps or quality. Also, it's not like I'd call 720p an important milestone or anything. A 540p stream when you're playing on 1080p can look great.

I'm not particularly sure of exactly what settings or fps or whatever you'll get in most scenarios, so if you want to make sure, maybe you should ask around in streaming threads or ask streamers.

I know that the RAM is overkill, but the price and savings is appealing. I have no plans on overclocking anything and my future rig is primarily gaming with some Photoshop, Illustrator, and video editing programs.

I forgot to add, but I should be able to use the i5 2500K fine right?

Yes.

Sounds good Myrimidon, I'll be patient for now. I'm really excited for the Ivy Bridge as well, but I want to play Diablo III at launch (which is this winter right?!)

Diablo III beta should start soon and Blizzard has stated that they want to ship the game before the end of the year. AMD's Bulldozer is expected for September 16th. Intel's Ivybridge won't be out until March / April of 2012.

I'm might just wait until Intel's Haswell chip ships and get a Nvidia Maxwell GPU with it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haswell_(microarchitecture)

Haswell is expected to have 8 cores!

A Maxwell GPU will have 16 times the power of a current Nvidia GPU.

Is this serious? They already have 10 cores with Westmere EX Xeons, and AMD has 12 cores in some Magny-Cours Opterons. In the consumer market, AMD's a couple months away from releasing 8 core models. But who cares how many cores there are, unless you can actually make use of them?

Also, maybe you should note that Maxwell slide was from an old presentation, may be very optimistic, says "per Watt," and is just talking about FLOPs.

SkyR just for your opinion do you think AMD's Bulldozer series will top the latest Core i5 / i7 series (such as the 2X00 Ks)? What do you think their price range will be at?

Got all my components in earlier today. Started working on it around 7. Finished up putting everything together around 10... only one minor hiccup. As it was one of the very last things I did, I accidentally switched around the connections for the power button and the reset button. Damn near gave myself a heart attack when the machine wouldn't turn on...

But I tested the button on the motherboard itself and the computer turned on fine, so I figured it out before completely disassembling everything... but certainly not before swearing a whole lot.

Gonna start installing drivers in a couple minutes... just needed to take a break so I hopped on my laptop for a bit.

Thanks again everybody. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be. (except for the heatsink. I fucking hate pushpins.)

There's a possibility that it will be competitive to that of Intel's current offerings since AMD is pricing it to compete against the Core i5 2500k and Core i7 2600k. The expected pricing starts at $200 for a quad core and goes up to $300 for an octo core. Even though Sandybridge-E is going to demolish it to the ground, I do hope that it outperforms the core i5 2500k and core i7 2600k in multi-threaded applications.

If I plan on Overclocking a 2500k, what would be a good speed to OC it to? Also, I have an HD6850 and a corsair cx430. will I need a better PSU to OC it?

What is a good but inexpensive HSF if I plan on OC the 2500k?

Depending on the exact chip you get, the cooling, desired noise and performance, and so on, probably between 4.3 and 4.8 GHz. I'd suggest 4.4 GHz or so, no more than 1.3V on the cores.

A couple decent options would be the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus ($25) or Xigmatek Gaia ($27). The fan on the Xigmatek is a little quieter because it doesn't spin up as fast, but they're roughly the same in performance. It's pretty much the same design for both, nothing special there.

edit: CX430 V2 has plenty of power for that, and it delivers very clean power. The only real weaknesses are the lack of connectors--though it has enough for your build--and the use of 2nd-tier or even 3rd-tier components that are okay but really can't be expected to last many many years of service, unlike what some other more expensive models use.

What is your budget?
I don't have a set limit, nor is it a limiting factor for me.

What is your resolution
1920x1080.

What are you using it for?
Gaming and streaming primarily.

What is your upgrade cycle?
I'd prefer that this build last upwards of five years.

When do you plan on building it?
As soon as is realistically possible.

Do you plan on overclocking?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
Yes.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Only if it's truly the best option. Otherwise, no.

Where are you buying your parts from?
NewEgg

My goals with this build:
1. Run StarCraft 2 on maximum settings.
2. Run Battlefield 3 on maximum settings.
3. Have the capability to stream in HD.

If you never plan on overclocking is there any reason to get an i5-2500K over an i5-2500?

Nope, both overclock the same, it depends on the motherboard, not the chipset.

Nope, the 2500 and 2500K are exactly the same CPU with the same stock/turbo clocks with the exception of the former having an unlocked multiplier and Intel HD Graphics 3000. If you're not planning to overclock, 2400 is the better choice as it is only 300MHz lesser (on Turbo).

@Gattaca - how did you manage to find a combo deal with actual good components in it? :O They're usuaully shitty hah.

But yeah, that power supply, mobo, RAM - all of it looks great.

Well, if you like that case, go for it. That looks awesome. ONly change I'd make is to get another DVD drive, since that one has $5 shipping and surely there's one for <= $20 with free shiping.

when you purchase a lot of things on newegg, they discount the shipping when you buy a bunch of things. the shipping for the whole order is $11.87. If i get a different DVD drive(19.99) that has free shipping it makes the shipping $10.45. By going with the cheaper one but not free shipping, I SAVE 8 CENTS.

so in the end it doesn't matter.

EDIT: Is there a big difference between the 6850 and 6870?? Is it worth the extra money?

I'd just like a few opinions really. Would it be worth getting a 570 over a 560 ti or would i be better off spending less on the 560 ti and saving money to upgrade in the future?
Also, for an extra £30 would the 6950 be worth it?
Many thanks
