yeah that seems better. Wonder how much you could tighten the timings with both and if you dropped the 1866 to 1600 as well...

Anyone have any experiences to share?

Probably be easier to get that working to spec, yes.

Newegg better get those in stock again! Pain in the ass buying from multiple sources zzzz.

Oh, and also, one of the 9 latency 1600mhz setups from gskill happens to come with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128500 as a mobo for ~$105 instead of $145 if you so choose to take it.

Any idea how it compares to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157229 ? They're both the same price pre rebate, though I imagine the Asrock probably performs quite a bit better...and I'm not going to be miserly over $50 on the motherboard.

I'm absolutely the wrong guy on motherboard comparisons.

As usual, the specifics are going to depend on the ones you get, just like everything, along with how much voltage you're comfortable with. I had to kick up Vdimm and VTT a tad to get my PC running properly when I tightened it to C8.

Hey guys. I've been looking through threads here and elsewhere on the internet to find a concrete answer, but I figure just asking here might get me the best answer:

So I've been living in Korea for a while now (about 20 months) and I'm just sick of playing SC2 on my laptop. It's not bad, but I do play on the lowest settings and do get FPS lag in even late game 1v1, and quite often in 2v2 (never tried 3v3 and above -_-) I'm used to it, but I've decided enough is enough.

I'm going to be bringing my desktop PC back with me to Korea when I go home for vacation. (Going to bring it on the plane carry-on... hope that will work. But that's another issue >_<)

Right now the computer at home is roughly as follows:

CPU: Intel E8800 Dual Core 3.0 GHz (not sure of other details on hand, unfortunately.)
RAM: 4 GB Corsair whatever (again, sorry I can't be more specific >_<)
Video: Radeon HD 4870

I'd kill to have this computer run SC2 on at least high settings flawlessly under all circumstances (4v4 here I come? ^^).

However, I'm strongly considering upgrading the video card. But according to this thread (scroll down a bit in OP, to GPU, desktops, high power cards) it should run the game on ultra at any resolution anyway. Is that flawlessly?

The video card I would consider upgrading to is: Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme. The cost of that is about $150 when converting from KRW. The other option is Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 but from what I've read and been told, the 5850 xtreme is sort of better anyway?

I said my goal is to play on high settings, but I'm not afraid to drop ~$150-160 on a new card if it will play SC2 at extreme flawlessly and also D3 flawlessly. The 5850/6850 would be a pretty large difference, right?

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm flying home in a month and I'm getting eager to buy stuff now. I'm playing on a 17" or whatever (smaller?) laptop screen. I want to buy my new 24" LG monitor ASAP!. And also a keyboard... oh I can't imagine playing SC2 on a full-sized keyboard. ^^

@SoleSteeler: You'll bottleneck on your CPU. C2D isn't bad, but SC2, especially in high army counts, like 4v4, CPU is a way more limiting factor than GPU.

In terms of GPU your 4870 won't run flawlessly on 1080p ultra.

the sapphire radeon 5850 at 150$ is a really good buy. It's pretty much as bang for buck as you can get...at least at that price in north america. It sold out in a week's time and I sort of regret not getting 2x when I had the chance. In terms of performance it is comparable to the 6870.

Appreciate the replies.

So I guess I can't really go wrong buying the 5850. About the CPU bottleneck, I don't really care about 4v4 so as long as I'm good to go on say 2v2 or the odd 3v3 I'm fine with that. I also don't mind dropping down to ultra if that would make a difference (but if it's CPU, maybe not?).

I don't really want to go the route of upgrading the CPU if I can help it. While I don't mind spending money, I'm also not that picky about everything running at the absolute max settings flawlessly. I just want it to look nice and run well, hehe.

Ugh, it's just stressful to think about all the hoops I'm going to have to jump through to get the PC from Canada to Korea... and then making sure it's worth my time.

edit: but being able to play D3 is also very important to me... at least on say... high settings equivalent in SC2. I hope it'll be okay for that. I don't plan on upgrading my PC at all for I'd say 3-4 years (and all I'll play is SC2/D3).

Dropping game settings to "help" your CPU won't improve your overall framerates as much as if it were the same case for the GPU.

Im fairly certain that you would be fine @ high settings with the 4870. So if you are budget restricted and can't upgrade both, staying on the 4870 and upgrading your CPU would be more worthwhile as JingleHell stated initially.

For something to last 3-4 years, I would upgrade now. A Wolfdale is serviceable for 1v1 or rare 2v2's, but if you are going to be consistently playing team games, I think you are better served biting the bullet now and upgrading to a SB setup. If money is an issue, you would need only get an i3-2100/H61 + 4GB set of DDR3. When you have the money, you can later bump it to an i5-2400 quad.

As for your concerns of traveling, I can't say I trust airport security with my PC parts, particularly hard drives. If I were you, I'd transfer things over to solid state devices (thumb drives or SSDs) and throw those in your bag. I'd almost say it'd be better if you sell off your old system to fund your SB upgrade. These way the parts you are taking to SK are in original packaging, which should provide a good amount of cushioning. Add bubble wrap in your suitcase if you must lol.

Then after you return to SK, you build it right then and there. *Hrmm...I think regarding your case, I would check if SK stores have a good selection. This may be the biggest factor on your decision I think

Until the D3 beta is running, we really have no idea of the CPU/GPU requirements. If there are any questions, I believe it would be the necessary physics for spells/death animations. I believe the 4-person party size should somewhat mitigate serious CPU requirements, but we'll see. As for GPU, with the 4870 you may have to settle for medium/high - just my guess of course.
With no power comes no responsibility?

Get low voltage kits and do the overclocking yourself: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231461

Asrock has more phases, on-board debug LED, and on/reset switches. Gigabyte has dual BIOS and SSD caching.

Hey guys. This is a build I've been working on. Price is about $1000. I'm mainly looking for feedback and fixes for this combination. I don't know if I need a heatsink or if I will overclock, so it'd be great if you can give me some tips. Thanks!

Well, if you don't want to OC, you don't need a CPU cooler, and can save some money on the motherboard and CPU. If you want to keep the option open, go ahead and get the cooler, since they don't cost much, and a better cooler never hurt anyone.

Get OEM Windows 7 instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986

If you aren't sure about overclocking than why do you have a 2500k and P8P67 Deluxe? The motherboard has little to no impact on performance. More expensive motherboards just allow for further overclocking, offer more features such as SLI / on-board buttons / etc, and have more connectivity. If you're not overclocking or need specific features, a $70 motherboard will be just as good as a $200 motherboard.

The K suffix on Intel processors signify an unlocked multiplier which is used for overclocking. If you're not overclocking than you can get a regular core i5 2500 or a core i5 2400.

I'm assuming you want to do SLI CrossfireX since you have a 600w power supply?

I would try to decide if you are or are not going to overclock before you make the purchase.

if you ARE:

you'll want a addon heatsink/fan as teh stock cooler is not guoing to cut it.

if you are NOT:
You won't need teh K version of the CPU, and you can use an H67 chipset board (usually less expensive)

---

Also, if you are not going to do any crossfire or OC'n in teh near future, you can save a bit on the PSU as well... 630W is a bit overkill for a barts and a sandybridge.

Is there a reason besides aesthetics you have chosen that case btw?

Ok, for the windows 7, I think I'm going to change it to the OEM Pro:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116992

Hmm. I don't plan to do SLI, so I should look for a cheaper motherboard then I guess.

I'll add a cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233082

One of my friends thought my original PSU power was too low. This was my original one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012
But the price is almost the exact same including shipping that I figured more power wouldn't hurt.

Case was based on aesthetics and how easily the air could flow out. Still a little caught up on dimensions for the case though. My friend said his GPU barely fit his case.

Well, your friend is wrong. A core i5 2500k uses roughly 60w while a 6870 uses roughly 130w, both under load. The entire configuration will have a hard time exceeding 300w. The XFX has a higher build quality than the Rosewill.

Why do you need Professional? If you needed features offered by professional, wouldn't you be able to get it through other means already?

Oh ok, thanks for the info.

That is true about the professional. I'll go ahead and switch it to the OEM windows 7 then. I guess the details on the pro caught me, including the $10 promo code :O

Found this mobo/cooler combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.667240

Is there a specific mobo I should be looking for?

Well is there a specific feature you want from the motherboard? Are you planning on getting a 5GHz overclock? If not, any P67 or Z68 motherboard around $125 should do. Some include but not limited to the Asrock P67 Pro3, Z68 Pro3, Gigabyte P67 UD3, Z68 D3H, MSI P67 G45, and P67 C series.

You have a triple channel kit. Only the X58 chipset offers triple channel. For P67, you want a dual channel kit such as 2x4GB or 4x4GB.

Why are you spending so much and not have an SSD?
