Does SC2 take a bigger performance hit than most other games with AA?
Forcing AA through drivers is often less efficient. The AF is also likely a huge hit. Both of them are pretty harsh when being done on lots of small things moving independently.
I suggest just researching how various eye candy settings work, to get a better idea, because it'd be a book if I tried to explain here.

My CD drive didn't come with screws to mount in the case and the screws that came with the case don't work either. Guess I'm just going to have to scrounge around for some that fit?
It's funny too because the screws that came with the PSU don't tighten all the way down but the screws that came with the case do haha.

CD Drives aren't suppose to come with screws. They're OEM products meaning that you get the product itself in a static bag and nothing else. Most cases have tool-less installation anyways =\

The drive mounting screws that came with the case should work though, so I get the impression he's just using the wrong ones.

Computer set up in around an hour, everything went smoothly! It was actually really easy which lines up with everything ive heard so far. Watching windows install right now lol. I guess I'm not 100% out of the woods yet, but just wanted to say thanks a bunch to everyone who contributed to the build and gave me tips. You guys were so nice, so helpful and so clear.

Hmm problem here. I installed windows 7 without typing the product key becuase it gae an error. Now I realize the guy at the university store gave me an upgrade disc, but a normal 7 professional key, which won't work. If I use that workaround for the upgrade version, will it accept the windows 7 normal key? Or will it inly accept a vista or xp key? Ie should I go replace the cd and reinstall before I do anything or can I use that workaround to avoid having to reinstall 7?

Well it didn't let me enter the key... unless attempting to enter the key causes a problem but it shouldn't. right? Either way it will be replaced with a retail version thar I can do a clean install with, but until then...
|
The upgrade disc allows for a clean install though. There shouldn't be a problem activating the key inside Windows, have you tried?
|
Yes I have. It says it can't be used for a clean install because it is an upgrade version. It doesn't say the key is invalid, it just says it can't be used because its an upgrade version
|
I wasn't referring to using it for the installation. I was referring to inside Windows, Control panel > System & Security > System
The two discs installs identical copies of Windows so there is no reason why a key should not activate if the key is indeed valid.
|
No I know. The error says something about the disc that WAS USED to install windows. I'll take a screenshot when i get back from my game. But i followed the process you detailed in 7

If you're referring to the activation error shown in the tutorial than you should proceed with the instructions detailed in option three. I misunderstood your initial post and the posts to follow -.-

Just played some Crysis 1920x1080 max settings 8xAA. Beautiful stuff. My 6970 was running pretty hot though. GPU-Z was putting it at 90 C max, 85 average. Fan average was only 35, but GPU load was 100%. Normal, or should I set up fan profiles in MSI afterburner? The GPU load was pretty surprising to me.
Edit: I don't really understand the measurement of GPU usage tbh.

K thanks skyR. I was just wondering whether my Windows 7 Pro retail key would work but it seems like it would. So I will proceed with that.

lol. guide worked like a charm. maybe i can get 70$ back from the university and just keep the upgrade version... because i'm pretty sure they offer the same deal. thanks a bunch. time to go download sc2 because i now know i won't have to reinstall! thanks again.

In basic terms.. just think of GPU load as a highway... it being at 100% means bumper to bumper traffic moving at the speed limit.
But to your question, the GPU load on a Cayman when running high settings (or really most settings) on most recent games, is going to be at or near 100% load at all times. The only thing that changes is how fast it churns out FPS... So at full settings and 8xAA you are gettgin XX FPS... If you lowered the settings... the GPU would still sit at 100%, but because there is less processing to do per frame.. u get higher FPS (XX+YY FPS).
You will only get the GPU to lower in load when CPU-tasks are needed prior to or during GPU tasks, and the GPU is not allowed to get ahead in the order.
As for the temperature... 11.6 catalyst build was just released.. go update your driver and Catalyst Control center (now called Fusion control center in some cases) to the latest versions. With them updated, you don't need to worry about your GPU temp, you will not harm your card.
If however you would feel safer... go right on ahead and set up those profiles

I had this same issue when I used the upgrade disc that I got from Microsoft using my .edu student email. All you have to do is call Microsoft and explain that you are doing a clean install and they will validate the license number for you. It ended up only taking like 20 minutes on the phone with some pleasant Indian guy.

It should be at the very least OK, I think its only really sold in Europe so no one really knows about it. Fractal Design has a lot of good will with computer builders with good cases ideas (I know that their very nice mITX case comes with a 300W Seasonic PSU so they're not huge corner cutters) and pretty amazing feature ideas for the offered prices so I'm willing to trust that it'll run a computer reliably.
From what I can understand from the Sweclockers review, its a FSP PSU with longer than usual connectors and good efficiency (both of these things are good). Ripple values are rather high but they still ran within spec but that's kind of what you expect from these low end budget PSUs.
