^skyR you are the best.
two questions.
1. is the xigmatek gaia cooler required?
2. the combo deal is $549 total before rebates, also it has more hdd and a bigger psu. can you tell me why your build is superior? I am too new to compare.
Thanks!
|
You're going to be overclocking so yes it is recommended to get an aftermarket heatsink such as the Xigmatek Gaia to keep temperatures and noise levels down.
|
The combo doesn't have a DVD drive whereas skyR listed one, and the Earthwatts Green 650W is certainly okay but worse quality (worse components that are not quite as robust, a little worse performance, just with higher-rated components to be able to handle the 650W). The motherboard skyR listed is also better.
If you want a 1TB drive, substitute that with the 500GB. Same with the case. The RAM skyR listed has worse specs, but that results in practically no difference in real world applications.
|
As for your second question, your bundle comes to $550 while mine comes to $561. Your bundle does not include a DVD Drive or a heatsink so that takes $51 off the total making it $510. Replace the $45 500GB HDD for a $60 HDD ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136534 ) brings the total to $525. Replace the $55 450w power supply with a 650w power supply for $90 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207014 ) brings total to $560, if you count rebates, it puts it at $540.
The motherboard in the bundle is not capable of SLI or CrossfireX so there is really no point in having a 650w power supply unless you plan on replacing the motherboard altogether sometime down the road. An overclocked core i5 2500k and an overclocked 5850 (and even an overclocked GTX 560) will barely use 300w under full load as seen here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce-gtx-560-ti_4.html#sect0
My bundle includes a better quality motherboard and power supply (five year instead of three).

Hey, my laptop just kicked the bucket, and fixing it would require quite a bit of an investment, so I've decided to get a desktop instead. I've answered the questions from the original post, and hope you guys can help me out with my build.
As a forewarning, I know absolutely nothing about computer hardware or building one (Though I did see there's a video tutorial posted a few pages back).
What is your budget? + Show Spoiler +Not exactly sure, but probably $600-800.
What is your resolution? + Show Spoiler +I don't have a monitor, so I suppose that would have to be included in the budget. The laptop that I ran off of for the last ~3 years was a 17" that went up to 1440x900. I guess I'd like to have the resolution around there, if possible.
What are you using it for? + Show Spoiler +Mainly gaming. I play things like Starcraft II, LoL, LotRO, etc. Nothing exactly "recent" or graphically intensive. I would, however, like to be able to stream myself playing SCII if it tickles my fancy; but no need for 1080p, 480p is fine unless the budget allows better.
What is your upgrade cycle? + Show Spoiler +As I said, my laptop lasted ~3 years. So the cycle would probably be something like 3+ years.
When do you plan on building it? + Show Spoiler +ASAP. I would like to get it done within the next week if possible, as I've already been like 2+ weeks without gaming access. I'm dying here.
Do you plan on overclocking? + Show Spoiler +No. I wouldn't feel at all comfortable doing so, and have no desire for it. I'll be just fine with whatever I can get.
Do you need an Operating System? + Show Spoiler +Unfortunately, yes. Windows 7 Home Premium.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? + Show Spoiler +
Where are you buying your parts from? + Show Spoiler +I live in Denton, so I'm ~30min away from the Plano and Irving Fry's. If a better deal is known on Newegg, I can take that, though.
I would really appreciate your guys' help, if you would.

On May 10 2011 12:23 Myrmidon wrote:+ Show Spoiler +Are you sure you don't want a monitor that's larger and/or has a higher resolution? Or maybe you were just saying that you wanted at least 1440x900...Anyway, this should do everything you ask including streaming. The GPU is enough for SC2 on ultra at that resolution and should be solid enough, though there are better, more expensive alternatives. 1440x900 is what I'm used to, so I wanted at least that. But that monitor you suggested for it starts creeping close to the budget limit. My dad's footing most of the bill (Sucks to have no money myself), so I had given him an ~$600 estimate, and am trying to keep it close around there.
EDIT#2: I can always upgrade my monitor later, anyway. Starting small and working my way up will also mean I can use the starter as a secondary monitor.
Excuse the stupid question, but are there any extra bits I need to get in addition to all that, like cables or anything, or is that list totally comprehensive?
EDIT#1:
On May 10 2011 12:23 Myrmidon wrote: edit: if maxing out or upping graphics settings on newer games is a priority over streaming some more CPU-heavy games like SC2, then it would be better to get a Core i3-2100 instead and then a higher-end GPU. Maxing out graphics isn't really in my top priorities. Even on a graphics-heavy game, medium settings are fine with me.

Cool, thanks! I'll see if my dad's good for the first set of specs and work down to the second set from there if need be.
Two more questions: 1. Do you think following that video is going to be a good idea for someone who is going at it for their first time, or is it better to utilize someone I know that probably has some experience? 2. I'm assuming it's best to grab that 2-day free shipping trial offer thing and then cancel within the 30-day period, or are there secret and/or nasty strings attached?
|
I haven't built my computer yet (all my parts got here today though!!!) but that video was really really helpful, so I think it should be pretty good for inexperienced people like you and me Bob. Thanks Myrmidon
Also I was tempted by the 2-day free shipping thing but didn't opt to do it, those things are really nasty I think and more hassle than they are worth.
|
Awesome! I ordered all my parts with 3-day shipping! Thanks a million Myrmidon!
Now I just have to make it alive until they arrive.

Ok, this is my first post(so take it easy^^) and I hope I am posting in the correct place. I have searched and read a lot in the past 2 days about CPUs... But unfortunately this stuff is like a whole new language for me. Ill try to answer the questions as best as I can even though I don't understand some of them. I may build a computer, but I was thinking that may be too hard for me to do, so if you guys know of any prebuilt desktops that would fit my needs below, I would be very happy for your suggestions ^^. Thanks TL forums
What is your budget? I+ Show Spoiler + am looking to spend $800 or less
What is your resolution?
+ Show Spoiler +Well this is my monitor- Acer S211HL bd 22" Class LED Monitor - 1080p, 1920x1080, 12000000:1 Dynamic, 5ms, VGA, DVI (hopefully thats the correct answer.)
What are you using it for? + Show Spoiler + I am going to be using it to play SC2 and maybe Crysis 2. I just want to be able to play SC2 on high or ultra settings.
What is your upgrade cycle? + Show Spoiler + Not sure what this means xD
When do you plan on building it? + Show Spoiler + If I do indeed build one, It would be over the process of ASAP. I am very impatience person.
Do you plan on overclocking? + Show Spoiler +Once again, not sure to this answer(I am a total noob) Do you need an Operating System? + Show Spoiler +Not sure to the answer to this one either. FML
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? + Show Spoiler + umm.. Lol, I am noobing it up.
. Where are you buying your parts from?
+ Show Spoiler +Newegg, Fry's or any other place that can ship to the US thats good.

@FearTheReaperMan
You can purchase from NCIXUS and pay them $50 to assemble it for you. This build comes to $751:+ Show Spoiler +
Or you can purchase from Newegg and assemble it yourself. This build with a slightly better processor, motherboard, and power supply comes to $731 before mail in rebates ($701 after mail in rebates): + Show Spoiler +
@dandan23
You're going to have to be more specific. I don't recall having an optimized overclock button in the BIOS. What multiplier, base clock, and vcore are you using?

Thank you so much man. I think I am going to have to go with the first set up because I dont really trust myself setting one of these up. And would this comp be good enough to run on ultra 1920x1080 screen?

@skyR
using 100 and 45 at each core 1.35 V cpu voltage

Huge Deal. 64gb Crucial C300 SSD @ newegg, $100 w/ email promo code EMCKEJK36

Either of Skyr's builds would destroy it in gaming.
