This is old, but dual channel versus single channel:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/PARALLEL-PROCESSING,1705-11.html

There's a difference in real applications, but it's not a big difference.

Hey, guys, I have psu I bought 3 years ago that I want to reuse and was wondering if it's sufficient to power a new build. The psu in question is this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371006

Is it enough to power an i5-2400, ASRock H61M mobo, ati 5750 1GB gpu, 2x4GB DDR3, 500 GB 7200RPM hd, standard $20 dvd drive, and possibly another hard drive?

It should be plenty, especially since you're only looking at about 200W total from that build. Original Antec Earthwatts (Seasonic OEM) is not bad at all for something that old.

Hello TL system builder people! I'm planning on buying a new system sometime in the next 2 months and I would really apprectiate some help choosing appropriate parts. So here is the answer to all those questions on the first page:

What is your budget?
I would go somewhere in the $900-$1200 range. I'm not picky about going up or down a little bit though.

What is your resolution?
Usually 1280x1024 I think? Heh, I guess I don't really know, I havent tried 1920x1080.

What is your upgrade cycle?
On the longer side. But I don't know for sure. Lets say 2 years.

When do you plan on building it?
In the next 1-2 months.

Do you plan on overclocking?
Nope!

Do you need an OS?
Technically yes, but don't factor it into the price.

Do you plan to SLI/Crossfire?
Probably not.

Where are you buying your parts?
Memoryexpress.com (location near me)
or
Newegg.ca
or any other place that will ship to canada.

Other notes:
Also need a monitor. Ok, well I don't NEED one but I would like a new one. My current one is small and onyl has a VGA. So if there are any recomendations there.... also don't need an optical drive, I'm just gonna recycle the one I currently have (that'll work right?)

Anyways, if you want to know anything else ask away. Eagerly awaiting some help!

You might as well ask again then, since deals come and go and prices shift. Lots of parts are fairly comparable in quality. There are a lot of viable options, so what's currently priced low won't be the same whenever you're buying, so a specific recommendation now is useless.

Well in a couple months, AMD will have released their upcoming Bulldozer CPUs, which may be also worth considering. We don't know too much about the performance yet, but if you're not running a lot of video encoding/rendering or any other such heavy multi-threaded computational tasks, my guess is that something like a Core i5-2400 would likely still be better than one of the Bulldozer CPUs for your purposes.

That's enough money to get something like a Core i5-2400, compatible LGA 1155 motherboard, 4GB of DDR3 RAM (or 8GB if you want and tend to be a memory hog), a mid-high end GPU like a HD 6950 / GTX 560 Ti, an SSD, etc.

Unless the optical drive is pretty old and is connected through IDE (PATA), you can reuse it.

Alright, looking for a quick troubleshoot if possible. I just got a cheap "bare bones" kit online to get comfortable with building a computer before going for a more expensive permanent build. So I know everything is compatible and such because it was pre-assembled by the good people at Tigerdirect.

Anyways, today I spent a few hours building and when I got everything into what I think is the right place it won't really start. It turns on, the power light turns red, the DVD/CD drive blinks green for a half second, the PSU fan starts and then it all shuts down. This repeats every time I try to power up.

Any ideas? I obviously will sit down and re-plug in everything when I get some time after finals, but I don't really know where to begin as far as problems. Thanks if anyone can help!

I just put together my first machine and I had the same problem.

This site helped a lot. I forgot to plug in the 8 pin motherboard connector lol. Turns out a lot of other people do too.

Sound card is not necessary if you do not have an expensive sound setup. All modern motherboards have integrated sound that will be perfectly fine.

430w is more than enough to handle a budget configuration.

USB comes from the motherboard and case.

You said you needed Windows 7 so I included that with in the price. You also did not list a case so I assume you need one.

The graphics card in the configuration below is slightly worse than the 6950 1GB but not by much. It'll easily run Starcraft 2 and other games on ultra on 1920x1080.

Here's a configuration that comes to $722 before mail in rebates, promotional offers, shipping, taxes, and other fees:

Core i5 2400 @ $185 (pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12200BD5176 )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57964

Asrock H67M @ $100 (pricematch with http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?item_id=037627 )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59672

MSI GTX 460 1GB @ $180 ($170 after promotional gift card, $145 after mail in rebate)
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54624&promoid=1320

GSkill 2x2GB 1333MHz @ $40 (pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15380BD0279 )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=42742

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB @ $40
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58402&promoid=1320

Corsair CX430 @ $30
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54842&promoid=1320

DVD Drive @ $17 (pricematch with http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/223566/Samsung/SH_S223C_BEBE_OEM/ )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=46792

Windows 7 Home Premium @ $94 (pricematch with http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/222137/MICROSOFT/GFC_00599/ )

Coolermaster Elite 310 @ $36 (pricematch with http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/216705/COOLERMASTER/RC_310_BWN1_GP/ )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=39592

Hello! Thank-you so much for helping me pick the parts!

Small budgeting problem, (CAD).

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54842&promoid=1320

^I can't get that for $30 anymore, and I'm being pushed over my budget a little bit too much after shipping and taxes (I'm at around $830 IIRC).

Are there any changes we can make that will take us back under our budget? Also, I won't get able to get the graphics card ( http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54624&promoid=1320 ) for that price unless I buy it tomorrow.

I do not need Windows 7.

Also, are there any decent monitors I can get for not too much over $100?
Lanaia is love.

Hey, just doing a slight upgrade to my computer, after this I think these will be my specs.

Windows 7 32-bit
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX

Things in italics are the new things I am getting. I've never built a computer before or gotten parts so just wanted to make sure the new things are compatible. And also, what can I expect gameplay wise from this computer? A somewhat unrelated question, but will this computer be able to stream or record? (My upload speed on speedtest.net is only .40 mbps, can that stream a decent 480p picture?)

Thanks!

Some of the items that I pricematched got sold out or has had its priced adjusted so make sure that you double check this when you order.

Pricematch the Core i5 2400 to $187 using: http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/232637/Intel/BX80623I52400/ if Direct Canada doesn't get it back in stock for $185.

Replace the Asrock H67 with an Intel H61 for $83 (pricematch with http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/233700/Intel/BOXDH61BEB3/ )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59498

You can pricematch the Corsair CX430 to $40 with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11180AC5606 or you can get the Antec Neo 450w for $45: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=60491&promoid=1320 The Antec Neo is a slightly better power supply.

You can step down to an ASUS GTX 460 768mb DirectCU for $155 ($125 after mail in rebate): http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54683&promoid=1320

Here's a decent monitor for $130: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=52148&promoid=1320

Get Windows 7 64 bit, there is no reason to be using 32 bit in this day and age. Windows 7 32 and 64 bit keys are interchangeable, you should be able to reuse your old Windows 7 key.

I don't think there is any reason to get a Phenom II based processor. An ASRock H61M-VS + Intel i5 2400 only adds up to $240 and blows the Phenom II out of the water...unless you really, really need SATA 3 or USB 3, there isn't any reason to go with that AMD build. It'll be able to handle SC2 well and should be able to stream fine.

If you really want to go AMD, wait for Llano/Bulldozer to start being released.

@Superiorwolf

It's very hard to see italics. Are you upgrading the motherboard, processor, and memory? Not the best idea to upgrade to an AM3 + Phenom II right now. One reason being that AMD's next generation processors are scheduled to be out in June and are going to be on the AM3+ socket. Some AM3 motherboards will support these newer processors with BIOS updates so ensure you get one that will support AM3+ processors if you want to go the AMD route. The second reason being that the Intel 2nd Generation Core series (ex. core i5 2400) outperforms the Phenom II in almost every task: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083

32-bit operating systems can only address a maximum of 4GB of memory so if you are getting 8GB of RAM, you want to upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit.

The RAM is a good choice since it's on sale for ~$60 after you apply the promo code.

The components are compatible but picking a Phenom II X4 965 over an Intel Core i5 2400 is a very poor decision.

Hey, just got the money to actually buy my parts, wanted to know if everything looks to be in order or if anyone would suggest some changes. I already have a gtx 460 so a gpu is not needed. I'm also not looking to overclock. This is my first time building a computer, so if there are any mistakes please help me out. Thank you very much for taking the time to look ^^

Your motherboard doesn't have USB3 or SATA3. An Asrock H61M US3/S3 would sort of be a better choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236

A cas8 ram kit is not necessary. The difference between cas8 and cas9 is very minor, getting a $40 cas9 kit would make more sense in your case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231253

The XFX 450w for $55 would be a better choice over the Antec Earthwatts 430: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012

An Antec Earthwatts 380w would also be capable of powering your configuration.

There is a high chance that you are just misinterpreting the memory values. Going to " Task Manager (CTRL ALT DEL) > Performance > Resource Monitor > Memory " should give you two values (one in green which is in use, and one in blue which is in standby - both values should add up to your total which is 4GB. If that is the case, you just misinterpreted it and there is nothing to be concerned about.

Check the SMART values of your HDD and also benchmark it by using HD Tune ( http://www.hdtune.com/ ).

Run memtest86+ ( http://www.memtest.org/ ) for at least four passes to ensure RAM stability.

Also run Furmark ( http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ ) and Prime95 ( http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205 ) to ensure GPU and CPU are not defective and that load temps are acceptable.

edit: Oh I forgot to mention you'll need to monitor the temperatures using RealTemp ( http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ ) and MSI Afterburner ( http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm )

Ran HD Tune and seems my HDD is alright. Also, I replaced it for a while with other HDD that I have previously used for 3 years and still got into the same problems. So it can't be the HDD...

Ran memtest86+ 4.20 for four passes. Got 0 (zero) errors.

Ran prime95. 4 threads, default torture settings.
Sometimes quickly terminates with error: "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4". Seldom terminates with a blue screen and a memory dump.
Torture Test: Small FFTs
> One thread lasted 20 minutes, another about 30 minutes then the other 2 about 1 hour.
Torture Test: In-place large FFT and Blend always fail in seconds.

Tried to increase the voltage for the CPU up to 1.4v. The only difference was an insta blue screen. In all tests the CPU temperature goes up to 70 degrees Celsius and one of the cores up to max 78. At idle time all cores are at about 40 degrees. The CPU is not overclocked.

Managed to run Furmark for a couple minutes then decided to do something (don't remember what) and Furmark crashed, got in the task bar the notification: "Display driver stopped working and has been restarted." Restarted the computer. Now every time I try to run Furmark I get the same error message and Furmark freezes. And after that the system seems kinda unstable because I got a chain of these errors when trying to open new tabs in Firefox.

With patience and time and many errors like this + Show Spoiler +
The file "D:\Games\StarCraft II\Mods\Core.SC2Mod\Backup.MPQ : Versions\Shaders14513\deltaCache.bin" could not be written. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (MPQTarget::Write/SFileWriteFile)
I managed to install SC2. When I'm lucky the computer lets me play it along with other games like Assassin's Creed, all on max details with enough fps. And some times it works well for a couple of hours and it doesn't crash and some times I get the driver error but the games are unaffected and some times the computer freezes or freezes with the blue screen and the memory dump.

Clearly the HDD is ok and I have a problem with the PSU/Mobo/CPU/RAM. I think the Furmark problem is because of other problems, not because of the Graphics Card.

Can we narrow it down? or I need to do more testing? I'll try during the next days to swap the CPU and RAM with some friends and see if I still have problems.

Born free, as free as the wind blows...

Your prime95 is a general error so it doesn't help us narrow it down.

The next time you encounter a blue screen, please try and document what it says, specifically the error code found in the bottom half of the screen.

You should manually set BIOS settings if you haven't done so already. Memory should be set to 9-9-9-24-2T 1333MHz @ 1.6v

Your CPU load temperatures are already quite high at stock vcore (which should be around 1.18v iirc) so increasing it to 1.4v probably wasn't the best idea. Try setting it to 1.25v instead and see if you still instantly blue screen. Also ensure that your base clock is set to 100.

ive decided to get a i5 2400 and a HIS radeon hd 5850 over the gtx 460 (same price, good choice?)

can you help suggest the cheapest H61 board and the power supply. I havn't read much on the PSU so i don't know the minimum to run these two. No crossfire in the future.

I will need to pick up my wireless internet. Would i need anythin extra?

How much are you paying for a HD 5850? It's a little better than a GTX 460 1GB.

You can get one for as low as $138 (but sold out for now):
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=60714&promoid=1320

on tigerdirect for $145, which is still a great deal:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=199805&SRCCODE=SHOPBOT&cm_mmc_o=2mHCjCmtB5_BfCjCVqHCjCdwwp

Cheapest H61 motherboard I think you can find on your own. Just search by price? Just be careful that you don't need more RAM slots, PCI/PCI-E slots, etc.

HD 5850 and i5-2400 means your full system load would be under 300W (below the range for which there are quality units anyway). A good power supply deal would be a Antec Neo Eco 450C for $45:

The Asrock H61M-VS @ $60 ($55 after mail in rebate) would be the cheapest H61 board available: http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?&item_id=037793

An Antec Neo 450w for $45 would be capable of powering your configuration: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=60491&promoid=1320

You would need a wireless card for wifi. Keep in mind that if you are getting that H61 board, you'll need a wireless card that fits in a PCI-E x1 slot.
