The Phenom II X4s do come with a better heatsink but I think the one provided with the X2 should be adequate for an unlock without overclocks.

ah ok I think I understand. If I don't plan on unlocking all the cores should I stick with the Phenom II X2? Or is there a better valued AMD processor at or around the same price ($90-$100)?

Maybe one of these?

The only difference between Phenoms and Athlon II's is the L3 cache right? I'm just not sure how much I should value having that as opposed to not.

edit: whoops had a wrong link in there

Try using the charts at tomshardware and anandtech. Find the procs that are in your price range and check the benchmarks. As far as sc2 goes there isnt any real benifit from a quad core over a dual core atm.

Yes, the difference between a Phenom and Athlon is the L3 cache. There are various reviews the performance between various processors, so decide for yourself:

For gaming alone, the Phenom II X2 would be my choice.

alright thanks a ton for the time you guys took to help me out with links on the PSU and CPU and such. I really appreciate it. I'm gonna go with the Phenom II X2 and the GPU you linked earlier, skyR.

Anyone have any insight or tips or deals on buying a widescreen monitor? I’m thinking about one in the 23” range. I went to the store and the 27” looks awesome, but I’m thinking it may just be too much screen for gaming. I have a pretty typical desk/chair setup with the monitor just behind my keyboard. I generally like to buy slightly higher end products without going too crazy. I don’t have a brand preference.
Zerg kebabs, Zerg creole, Zerg gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. There's pineapple Zerg and lemon Zerg, coconut Zerg, pepper Zerg, Zerg soup, Zerg stew, Zerg salad, Zerg and potatoes, Zerg burger, Zerg sandwich... That's, that's about it.

@Anjuu

These two articles should help you if you are in the market for a monitor, there's also plenty of monitor reviews on the site as well:

Thank you..

Which slot should i use though using 2 x 120 gb vertex 3 ?
2 xSATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (gray) by P67
2 xSATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (navy blue) by Marvell 9120

and what's "All the boards except the GD65 has 12 phase power" ?
don't get the phase power.. more the better ?

and if i get a gtx580 and a dx sound card that uses pci-e slot
meaning i wont have enough slots for..
"The P8P67 Standard and UD3P does not offer SLI while the rest do."

Use the Intel ports (gray). People seem to report better performance with these.

Your sound card will use PCI x1, you will have plenty of slots for it and your graphics card regardless of which motherboard you choose. SLI is running two nVIDIA cards in tandem. If you plan on doing this you will require an SLI compatible motherboard, which will have slots for two graphics cards.

Edit: also, if you're buying two 120 GB Vertex 3, you might as well buy one 240 GB. The 240 GB is significantly faster. There is a very technical article on AnandTech about why this is the case.

Yes, use the Intel ports. AFAIK the Marvell 9120 is connected to the P67 chipset anyway, so the direct connection would be better.

Well, RAID 0 (two) 120 GB Vertex 3 would be significantly faster than a single 240 GB Vertex 3...but it's not worth it. That is, unless you have some server workloads with ungodly I/O requirements or really need to be able to be reading or writing data in excess of 600 MB/s. I'd rather have TRIM support and half the chance of failure.

Building new gaming pc for a friend. He wants to spend up to $1k He plays WoW exclusively and I have no idea what resolutions he uses so I guess 1080p would be what we are aiming for.

Prices bellow are in AUD and are slightly more expensive than newegg but are some of the cheapest available to me atm.

Cpu: i5-2500 ($223)
Mobo: ASUS P8P67-M-V3 ($93)
Ram: 8GB KIT 1600 (4GB x 2) G.SKILL RIPJAWS ($120)
Gpu: GTX 560Ti 1GB MSI ($269)
psu: SEASONIC S12II 80+ 430W ($84)
HDD: 500GB WD Green ($42)
case: Antec 300 ($55)
fans: 2x COOLER MASTER SILENT LED FAN 12CM ($30)

Total $916

So my question basically is where should I be spending the extra ~$80 or so? Should I be going for an i7 2600 ($92 more) or am I better off getting a diffrent video card maybe a gtx570. I think wow only supports dual core.

Particularly if you're getting a (relatively slow) WD Green, you should ditch the two extra case fans, get a cheaper 8GB RAM kit (or even 4GB, but 8GB is okay), and then get an SSD. The two case fans may reduce temperatures maybe a few degrees tops and are probably not worth that cost. RAM speed and specs have negligible impact on application performance, so don't be shy about getting a normal 1333 MHz kit with no heatspreaders. i7-2600 is definitely not worth it.

There may be something decent for cheaper than the S12II 430W too. Where are you getting the parts from?

@Az0r_au

WoW utilizes more than two cores but the core i7 2600 would not be worth it for the sole purpose of WoW.

There is very little difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz memory, see here: http://techreport.com/articles.x/20377

Seasonic power supplies come at a premium over their competitors so there are probably better alternatives.

If the configuration isn't being overclocked than you should look into getting a H61 / H67 board to save some money.

Get a SSD bigger than 60GB since WoW + Windows 7 should take almost 50GB in total. There is a BIG difference between playing WoW on a HDD and a SSD.

@dandan23

More phases equates to better power which in turn leads to a higher overclock. But this shouldn't concern you since most P67 boards will easily reach the 4.5GHz - 5GHz range.

Sound cards use a PCI-E x1 slot and all your listed motherboards have enough PCI-E slots for a PCI-E sound card and SLI to fit.

Thanks for the advice so far Myrm and SkyR. Buying from https://www.pcdiy.com.au/ad/Pricelist.pdf
The 2 fans were at request from my friend. He wanted LED front fans for the looks. I personally wouldn't bother with them. Same with the ram, he asked for ripjaws cause of the looks. The 1333 is only $4 less for a 4gb stick than the 1600.

The only 120gb SSD's they have are ~$230 abit out of the budget and like you said wow + windows7 wont fit onto 60gb. Should I just upgrade to a WD black? I know wow has alot of loading when moving between zones.

Unfortunately the site doesn't have a wide variety of low end PSUs The only others of similar price/wattage are CM (which I've heard nothing but bad news) and ThermalTake which I know very little about, but they dont seem to be 80+ certified and had considerably lower ampage on the 12v. Other than that it's mostly 600w+ psus that are $100+

Hm, maybe the only quality lower-wattage PSU is the Earthwatts Green 380D included in the NSK 4480 II case. You're right about the S12II 430W then.

Just checking, but you didn't forget a DVD drive? That may be most of the rest of the budget.

If not, I'd still consider stepping down to a i5-2400 and maybe a HD 6870, and then grabbing the 60GB Patriot Inferno (SandForce SF1200 series like the Corsair Force, OCZ Vertex 2/Agility 2, etc.). If you're not getting the SSD, you should probably upgrade the WD Green yeah.

OK thanks again myrm. Unfortunately wow is like 40gb or something retarded and wont fit on a 60gb. Ill just upgrade to a WD black and an optical drive(thanks for reminding me)

Good point. I totally agree: save money, get double the space and TRIM with a 240 GB Vertex 3 unless you have a very specific reason to need them in Raid 0.

I'm looking for an SSD (around 60-80 gb) to use as a boot drive and for my main applications like SC2 and matlab and stuff. From reading the reviews, it seems like a lot of them are failing within weeks to a few months.
Can someone recommend me any specific ones that are reliable and will last at least 2 years?
