Can I be running other things while Prime95/Furmark is running in the background, or should I just let it alone?
edit: Also, it seems to be running at 86 degrees Celcius while the test is running...isn't this a little high? monitered with realtemp
double edit: Looked at speedfan, CPU is listed at 41 degrees, but AUX (whatever that is) is listed at 77C and Core0 at 88 degrees...
triple edit: used speedfan, realtemp, and speccy, idle temps are around 30-40C and at load jumps up to as high as 90C, both CPU and cores.

Hello Teamliquid!

I am looking to build a new computer system. I've been shopping around and I've found a selection of parts, but I'm not very experienced at all in purchasing computers. My budget is around $900-$1000 CAD. I'm looking for a high-end system for video, gaming and programming applications (although I think video & gaming are more relevant). I'm running a monitor of 1680 x 1050. I'd like to have SLI as a feature.

Here's what I got so far:

+ Show Spoiler +

GFX ~200.00 CAD
This (nVidia): http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_559&item_id=032938 or http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=569_43_557_559&item_id=030349 (GeForce 460 vs 470, I'm not really sure which to choose. Noticing the small price difference, I'd currently opt for the 470).

Or this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7091952&CatId=3669#

I'm not sure what to choose. I settled on the nVidia first, but then my friend showed me the ATI and I heard it was a better value and better overall card.

CPU ~329.99 CAD
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_65&item_id=035532

Mobo ~199.99 CAD
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=569_26_722&item_id=035395

RAM ~50.00 CAD
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_311_312_611&item_id=023354

Power Supply ~120.00 CAD
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4558896&CatId=2533

HDD ~90.00 CAD
http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_210_212&item_id=029337

DVD Drive ~25.99 CAD
http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_61&item_id=035818

Case ~120.00 CAD (although really not sure which case to choose in general...I'd like something simple)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4435046&CatId=1509

Total Cost: ~1200.00 CAD

Please look at my selections and tell me what you think. I'm purchasing from the Toronto area (if someone can recommend a good store, please do!). If you think I should totally redo my setup, please tell me too. I really appreciate your input. Thanks.

A lot of your components are overpriced. You know that Canada Computers offers pricematching right? NCIX has a store located in Markham and another located in Scarborough, they offer pricematching, has weekly sales, and has a better inventory than the rest. You can use www.shopbot.ca to pricematch.

Ultra power supplies are really terrible... the 750w unit has 54a on its 12v rails compared to most others which has 60a or higher.

The price difference between a GTX 460 1GB and GTX 470 is not small, it's ~$50+. GTX 570 is outdated anyways. You'll much better off going with a 6950 1GB or GTX 560 if you are looking for a graphics card in the $250 range. The 6950 1GB usually comes in at $200 after mail in rebate. But if you're not even running 1080p, you're not going to notice a big difference between a $150 card and a $250 card.

Unless you do a lot of video editing, the price premium on hyperthreading isn't worth it either. Just grab a core i5 2500k. Since you selected an unlocked processor, you may want to grab a heatsink for overclocking as well. If you don't plan on overclocking than just get a regular core i5 2500 or core i7 2600.

650W is more than enough for SLI / CrossfireX configurations.

These would be much better options:

XFX Radeon HD6850 @ $165 ($145 after mail in rebate)
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=56261&promoid=1302

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB @ $44 (pricematch with http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/232142/Western_Digital/WD5002AALX/ )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57432

GSkill 2x2GB 1333MHz @ $40
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57947&promoid=1302

Antec Truepower New 650W @ $70
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=36263&promoid=1302

Hey guys,

I'm building a new rig and I'm just wondering if you feel comfortable going with a copy of Windows 7 OEM? I didn't know the difference between the regular and OEM versions of Windows until I started looking into it and I'm just nervous if I need to RMA my motherboard it'll be a problem. I'm not planning on really upgrading any parts for the life of the computer other than more RAM and possibly a new graphics card so I don't think it'll be a problem. Just seeing if anyone has any horror stories or someone really feels I should stay away from an OEM version. Thanks!

Retail means you own the license. OEM is just for one system. But you can just reactivate the OEM by calling Microsoft if it ever gets deactivated because you changed components, it's not a big deal.

Greetings,

a friend of mine needs a new computer, because his old laptop is on the verge of dieing. He decided that he wants to go the desktop + netbook route now and is looking for the desktop part at the moment. He already went through some stuff and came up with a PC he finds suitable:
Lenovo IdeaCentre B510 VCU1OGE
+ Show Spoiler +
http://www.cyberport.de/?DEEP=1135-00N&APID=6
Specs in short are
A 23" all-in-one PC with
i5-750s, HD5850 1GB, 6 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD, Blu-Ray Burner, Card-reader, WLan

Since he is no real gamer, I told him that it appears that these specs are more than he needs already, though I'm not sure what kind of hardware requirements there are for Blu-Ray playback. But he insists that since that PC is pretty much meant to last forever that he wants quality hardware.

So now for the core part.

What is your budget?

I'm trying to put together an alternate PC which is roughly of the same quality, if not a little better (thinking especially about the Sandy Bridge processors) but at the same time cheaper. We live in Germany so the price would be roughly 800-950€ to make a noticeable difference.

What is your resolution?

Together with the PC I'd need a 23" or 24" screen, using the respective HD resolutions. This is actually where I struggle the most, because my knowledge about monitors is pretty much non-existant.

What are you using it for?

It will mostly be used as the common multimedia/working PC, with Blu-Ray compability and also a little photo editing on the side.

What is your upgrade cycle?

There will almost certainly be no upgrades to this machine, so until break-down.

When do you plan on building it?

Within a few weeks' time, the sooner the better.

Do you plan on overclocking?

No overclocking.

Do you need an Operating System?

I don't need an OS.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

SLI/Crossfire won't be neccessary at all.

Where are you buying your parts from?

I think local German retailers are most likely more expensive than online shops. So the most likely resource will be Amazon.de/Alternate.de/Hardwareversand.de

Thank you in advance if anyone should try to tackle this task!

Update, now after around 15-30 minutes of Prime95 it has basically stabilized, getting core temps of around 75C. Is this ok for under load, or should it be much cooler? i5 2400 and stock cooler.
Thanks.

75c is on the high side even for the stock cooler.

I think something's definitely up. Motherboard is reading 64C even when IDled, running Kombustor (MSI version of Furmark) and the GPU (560 TI) is at 67C. CPU stabilizes at 78C after around half an hour of prime 95...high temps on everything seem to indicate that it's not just the CPU that's messed up.

Here is a general idea. Actually, a HD 6850 is a little worse than a HD 5850 in terms of performance, but you don't need anything near that good anyway if not really gaming. Feel free to get another 1TB drive if storage capacity was that important, or upgrade the case to something else.

78c is definitely something to be concerned about without OC on the stock cooler. You may want to make sure you installed it correctly or even reseat it, those pushpins are a pain in the ass unfortunately.

67C for full load on the GPU is not bad. You may possibly still be able to turn the fans up using MSI Afterburner.

Where are you getting the motherboard temperature from?

Speccy.
I already checked the heatsink, it it's installed correctly.
Just played Shogun 2 for around an hour, CPU temp around 59C and GPU temp around 50.

My dell laptop broke

I need another one asap for school, with two restrictions: price range is from 400-500 and it can't be dell (never buying a dell again).

I guess as long as it can do everything, play hd music, play hd video (this isn't necessary but it'd be a big plus), it'd be fine. I don't know much about laptops or computers, and know even less about the more current systems and i am completely unaware of how to buy a system for a good price (something like price to performance ratio?)

It would be a big plus if I could run hon on it (graphics and everything down to bare minimum is absolutely fine, i dont care about them).

If anyone could hit me up with some suggestions that would be awesome! this is a pretty hefty investment for me (i dont make much money) so I wanna make sure that I get the best value for a 400-500 laptop, and I dont like to rely or trust on salesman (for obvious reasons). Thanks for the help TL i appreciate it!

One of these, in my opinion:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-LX.RD502.005/15754504
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/900546/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Z560-0914-42U-Laptop/

The first one can probably do what you want it to do. It would additionally be able to play certain modern games fine on low settings, just not ones that are hard on the CPU (like SC2). The second choice has a much faster CPU and overall better specs, but it has a somewhat worse graphics processor.

I'm not quite sure what kind of specs HoN takes. Maybe somebody else has an idea if the E-350 is up to the task?

With a 15.6" screen, very likely not. Think of the E-350 as a more efficient Intel dual core Atom w/ nVidia Ion that doesn't have to deal with all of the problems you get with a discrete GPU (heat, power, driver issues with nVidia Optimus). I think its also better at doing netbooky stuff (running Aero and videos) and has every output port, like HDMI, you can think of.

On a true ~10" netbook (not a subnetbook), it can probably run fairly decently if you turn literally everything off...not mind blowing but it can probably push barely 30 FPS like it does with a large number of games out there. Its powerful enough that it can easily play HD video (h.262) without problems but has problems with HD Flash because Flash is awful.

Hi guys I am going to be building a computer for my family. My brother wants it to play sc2, and it would preferably cost around $400-$450. Here is what I have so far:

https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=15696405

Then in a combo there is

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX

and

BIOSTAR TA790XE AM2+/AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard

How does this look? Any recommendations or suggestions you guys have for this build would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Its pretty alright

Is HD (well, 720p; 1080p is pretty much irrelevant unless you're connecting to an external 1080p monitor) Flash even a problem?
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4134/the-brazos-review-amds-e350-supplants-ion-for-miniitx/4

By 15.6", you mean 1366x768? The HD 6310 should be up for the task at that resolution, at least compared to Arrandale IGP or Radeon HD 4250 or something like that.

Is there anything important to know about IPS monitors as opposed to TFT ones?

@Toobz:

Your wishlist is private. Either make it public or post an image or the parts list, because right now we can't see it.

@Bounty:

IPS (in plane switching) is a type of TFT LCD technology. The most common technology used is TN (twisted nematic) because it's the cheapest. The performance of certain types and subtypes of displays is usually similar in some aspects because of the similarities in implementation. e.g. TN panels tend to have bad viewing angles. But you should really be looking for reviews on a model-by-model basis.

Some reviews:
