Also I only have 8gb ram. Is it worth upgrading to 24gb? No, waste of money unless you don't care about wasting money. GTX 560 Ti was already overkill for Starcraft II and getting a GTX 770 / 780 is even more absurd. Why would you get 24gb of memory? Do you plan on using a RAMDisk or VM?
All I use my computer is for: -SC2 -Essays -Internet stuff/watching videos -Skype

Your computer is overkill already for everything you do so... you're fine

Well, overkill implies that better wouldn't help in a way that matters, so it's not "entirely" true for some people, because that's subjective
you could say for example, a better graphics card wouldn't change FPS at all in an endgame battle for sc2, where you have performance issues with the game, and a weaker card could run those at the same FPS because you are not held back by GPU performance, which is true, so you could say that the 560ti is overkill for running maxed battles in sc2 at optimal performance
but also, an upgrade to an i5 4670k and some fast RAM with some nice overclocking could bring like 15-25% higher minimum FPS, the 3570k is not overkill if you are holding you back, the question is, who wants to make an entire platform change, replace already functional RAM, probably cooler too, and spend a ton of time messing around for that little performance gains only in a niche?

Hello guys!
I'm looking to build a PC mainly for gaming and listening to music. I already own a monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard.
What is your budget?
I'm hoping to complete my build within $600.
What is your resolution?
1920 x 1080. I already own a monitor
What are you using it for?
I would only play Dota 2 and listen to music while playing. I have a laptor for school work.
What is your upgrade cycle?
4+ years
When do you plan on building it?
As soon as possible
Do you plan on overclocking?
No
Do you need an Operating System?
No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No
Where are you buying your parts from?
NCIX and NEWEGG, doesn't matter
Also I'm wondering what you guys think about the build some guy on reddit recommends

Thanks a lot!!!

Seems decent for a tight tight budget build if that's what you want, i'd get 2x2gb of RAM though (or obviously, if you want 8gb of ram, get 2x4gb - it can make a big difference to your user experience if you want it and use it, like if you enjoy flooding browser tabs, but also 4gb-8gb can cost you like $35 and be useless if you don't use it)

okay. I can go up to 600$ with taxes and all so I think I could get a better pieces like graphic card and processor (motherboard also?), do you have any suggestion?

Depends what you want to do with it, i'm not sure of dota 2 engine in particular but it's not extremely demanding. It's low budget, so there's not really anything not easily upgradable (in terms of buying X instead of Y - don't mean to miscommunicate, it would be a lot of wasted money if you were to buy all of that stuff and then try to drop in upgrades 3 months later for example)

Hey all,
I just built my own Desktop and the last piece of the puzzle is the monitor. I have done my own research, but I am not 100% on anything. I just want to make sure I get something that will be able to best utilize the vid card that i have.
I am running i7 processor with the EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card.
I am hoping to stay in the $200-$300 price range if possible. I have looked at the Acer S242HLbid which i can get for 199.99, or the Dell UltraSharp U2412M. I just want to make sure I make the right choice.
Any advice, opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

I have a 4770k and 770 myself. I went with the U2412M and have absolutely zero complaints while gaming. It's fantastic. However when browsing at certain angles, I do notice cross-hatching. If I did photo editing or graphics work, that might be a significant drawback, but as is, I don't notice it when I'm in my gaming "posture" so it doesn't really bother me.
also you might want to check out the monitor thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=308280

I have heard nothing but good things about the Ultrasharp; one of my buddies has two of them and no complaints. I was just wondering if the Acer would be a good bargain. Newegg has a deal for both with a $50 gift card so essentially ur paying $150 for the Acer & $250 for the Ultrasharp.
Just wanted to get some insight. Ill post on that thread and see how it goes.
Thanks again

I'm looking to build a PC for the first time for use with school/work (Mainly CAD rendering, MATLAB, lots of papers and all that jazz, little bit of photo, video, and music editing) and gaming!
What is your budget?
I'm hoping to complete my build within $1200 including a monitor. I'm am a little flexible (give or take $100), but I'm hoping for the most bang for my buck.
What is your resolution?
I need to get a new monitor, but I want it to be at least 1920x1080.
What are you using it for?
Mainly CAD rendering, MATLAB, little bit of photo, video, and music editing, and games! Games wise would be SC2, Dota2, Borderlands 2, Metro Last Light and anything else on steam. I want to be able to max out most settings.
I am also going to be moving my machine around (between home and school) every semester and break, so I don't think a full tower would be ideal.
What is your upgrade cycle?
4+ years
When do you plan on building it?
Hopefully within the next two weeks.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I've never OC'd before, but I am willing to put in the time to do it. Would Oc'ing affect my machine because I would be moving it around every few months?
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes I do need an operating system!
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Naw
Where are you buying your parts from?
I have a microcenter and fry's nearby home, and I live in the continental U.S.
Thank you guys in advance. I really appreciate the advice.
Didn't want to post again, but I think I got skimmed over. XD Thanks again for the help.

$1105. If you want an mATX case than you can select one, something like the Fractal Design Core 1000 or Silverstone TJ08-E but you'll have to change the motherboard to an mATX one, all of which will be quite inferior to the UD4H at $115 just to keep in mind.
No, overclocking would not affect your computer because you're moving it around. The heatsink is big / heavy so you'll just want to carry it sideways (never upright) though you should do this even without a big heatsink.
You can add a disc drive if you need one, as well as an appropriate sized HDD if you need one.

Erhm. The GA-Z87X-D3H specifications (here) state that it works for a memory speed of 1300 / 1600 Mhz.
How exactly does a higher speed memory bring any advantages? Can the memory controller work with those in the first place? oo
|
Retailer is wrong. Z87X-D3H supports speeds up to 3000MHz.
|
Gotcha. I probably could have checked the Gigabyte site in the first place. ;;

Hmm, I don't really think I need that SSD. But I could use that 100$ to improve some other parts. Which part improvement would make dota 2 run better at 1080?
|
None, as i said the build the guy recommended is fine for just dota2 at 1080p, the build i gave you is just an overall improvement with a better PSU which you can reuse in the future, a good case (you can get any of your liking from a good brand, thats a personnal choice), hdd, ssd and a better cpu which you may or may not need/use (but i mean, getting an i3 when you have the money over a pentium for me is really something to do imho)
you don't need to get the SSD, but that is actually the main improvement between the builds, more then going from a pentium to an i3 (everyone will recommend you one, and the ones you don't haven't used one and don't know what they are talking about)
you can also check out Skyr's build as it comes cheaper

What is your budget?
My budget is around $1000.
What is your resolution?
1600x900.
What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming and streaming.
What is your upgrade cycle?
Around every 4 years I'll be upgrading.
When do you plan on building it?
As soon as I can.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I don't plan on overclocking.
Do you need an Operating System?
I have an OS.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I'm not sure whether or not to add a second GPI or SLI or Crossfire .
Where are you buying your parts from?
Canadiancomputers or newegg.ca
