Did one of you just suggest to get the lower one if I don't want to OC and the other the higher one if I don't want to OC? ;;;;;
I'll add one of the stock fans then and run it with 2 front and 1 back, sounds fine and not much more expensive. The i7 is running so I can comfortably stream & have a happy time editing in Photoshop. For RAM 16GB can't hurt for photoshop either and it's not like saving 60 bucks on RAM will make or break the budget when I'm in that price category anyway.
I think my biggest saving where I was like "Okay, I don't really need this" was dropping from a 250 Pro SSD to the 120 regular one.
|
kk for Photoshop and if I had the money, I'd take the i7 and 16GB of RAM too.
Though it's quite possible you'd notice 250GB vs. 120GB SSD space before i5 vs. i7. Depends on usage, really.

If you're refering to RAM, i was saying the 1866 kit is pretty much underclocked to be called 1.5v ram

@Myrm: Agree. The way I look at things it's much easier to say "Oh well, I need a new SSD" a year down the road than "Oh well, I should have bought an i7 instead". That's what I pay a premium for. Similar to how I pay a ~50 bucks premium for choosing Haswell over Sandy Bridge. If there will be a Haswell/Broadwell that's a reasonable upgrade choice 2-3 years down the road I'm happy. If not, I didn't lose much from it.

Broadwell might be worthwhile for a slight upgrade (particularly if it OC's well, or there's a solution for the IHS solder issue that plagues haswell/ivy bridge but probably not.
Haswell is significantly better than sandy bridge though if you have good cooling, the IPC gains might have been pretty small in many cases over ivy (~7%ish) but they're bigger in some cases and bigger vs sandy, haswell has a 20% lead over sandy bridge in x264 at the same clocks

What is your budget?
700-850 CAD edit: Looking to get GPU, CPU, mobo maybe PSU
What is your resolution?
1600p (2540x1600?)
What are you using it for? Gaming (Arkham City/Origins?, Borderlands2, Dota2, Skyrim, etc), Photoshop, etc.
What is your upgrade cycle?
2 years but I buy parts on extreme sales eg. boxing day often.
When do you plan on building it?
Now - Christmas
Do you plan on overclocking?
Yes
Do you need an Operating System?
No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Options (leaning towards 2 if its actually as good as people say it is): 1) 680 Xfire 2) (1) 780 *3) 760 xfire
Where are you buying your parts from?
Memory Express price matching.
Goals and Planned Upgrade: -Want enough GPU power to run games better at 1600p, better CPU to prevent potential bottlenecking of SLI graphics card.
Questions: -680 SLI (by finding a cheap 680) or 760 SLI (would sell my current 680)?? I heard 760 SLI is in line with GTX Titan because of scaling and its a great price. -Ivy Bridge or Haswell? Hearing that going i5-3570k is better than 4670k because of OC capabilities.
Thanks!

Looks like you want another 680 and a 4670k

Where did you hear that?

If you're playing Skyrim, Borderlands 2 and Starcraft 2, you're already CPU limited for the first two at times i think*, and certainly for sc2 by a massive margin
*I got a few shots of borderlands 2 being held back a lot by 1 thread on 4770k @4.7ghz, skyrim is quite cpu limited i hear, and sc2 is definately extremely CPU limited with far worse GPU's in terms of minimum FPS and battles

Tomshardware is pretty much a joke in terms of OC info, especially the forums, and anand editors proved they knew nothing of haswell when they tried to OC past 1.4vcore with 1.65vrin and used it to talk down the ud3h
SLI Mirrors VRAM, doesn't add to it. A pair of 2gb cards = 2gb VRAM.
680 sli will be better than 760 sli by like 25-35% i think (not sure of numbers) and i'd go for it if you have a 4gb vram card and can get another one, for 1600p. Otherwise, either option would probably work
For CPU: 1) Worth the cost to go i5-3570k VS. 4670k?? Or in short why not get the Ivy Bridge (cheaper?)
Haswell is better, and probably the d3h, see above

4670k is actually less expensive than the 3570k in Canada fyi.

Why not go 1x 780 instead of 2x 760 for about the same money? Shouldn't that be better? I only hear bad things about SLI. The driver has to be prepared to run for every single game you want to play with SLI, the graphics are forced to not have jerky animations by delaying every single frame compared to a single graphics card. It overall sounds like a headache and like it should be avoided if possible and a single card can do whatever you want to do exactly.
Is the 680 that much worse than 2x 760 or 1x 780? Would upgrading even make sense?

780 with aftermarket cooler is like within 5% performance of the titan in almost every case in terms of gaming (unless you use 5760x1080 or 4k) unless you replace titan cooler after buying it so keep that in mind

just a remark to skyrim - if heavily modded with enb / sweetfx and going overboard with texture mods cpu doesnt hold u back anymore, its extremely gpu dependent

Cryo - So I currently have a 680 2GB, safe to say just potentially go with a second?
Parts to get: GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128544
i5-4670k http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX45429
PSU: How much power do I need to power potentially 2 gpus, cpu, ssd, 2 hdds? Anyone recommended?
Ropid/Others
I've read up a lot on reviews of 780, 680 SLI, 760 SLI. At least for the SLI reviews from those usual sites (toms/anand/techpowerup). What is the general consensus because the GPU is the biggest thing I am looking to upgrade, to justify it, playing at 1600p can be challenging with frame issues for some games.
|
You need a Z87 for Haswell and a UD3H is unnecessary. D3H refers to the Z87X-D3H, not the Z87X-UD3H.
If GTX 680 or 780 SLI, you'd probably want a 750w if you plan on overclocking the GPUs.

I've build a pc almost 3 years ago, and I bought a New GPU around 1 year ago. I build it for gaming purposes only. My GPU is an Asus 560 gtx DirectCU ii OC, but my CPU that's a lot older is bottlenecking me hard. My CPU is an intel i5 650 (dual cOre), and I'M now looking for a New CPU. The newer CPU's don't fit on my motherboard, so I need a New one of that too.
I'M looking for a good CPU (not much more than 300€ though) so the i7 2600k looks good. I'M wondering Which motherboard and CPU fits best with my current GPU.
My ram: kingston value ram (2x 4gb) 850 watts Power Monitor: Benq rl2450ht Windows 7 64bit
I also got the offer for the New i7 4770k that I can get for 225€, but I heard it's not the best for gaming. Anyway, I hope someone can help me out, because my brain is bottlenecking me on hardware knowledge :p
Robert 4770k is better than a 2600k. The 4770k (and the 2600k along with every other core i7 as well) are "not good for gaming" because most games utilize two cores with some taking advantage of four (mainly the newer titles). So you just end up throwing your money out the window. A core i5 4670k would offer near identical performance to that of a 4770k for most games. K suffix processors are also for overclocking but from the sound of it, you don't seem like someone whose going to overclock... so if you're not overclocking then you should get a non-K suffix processor (eg. core i7 4770, core i5 4670) with a H87 or B85 board. Thanks a lot for your reply man, I bought an i5 4670k and a H87 motherboard. Cheers Hey, just so you know, there's also an "i5-4670". Notice the missing "k" at the end. It's a little cheaper and can't be overclocked. The thing is, a H87 board can't overclock. Choosing the i5-4670k with a H87 is thus a bit of a waste. If you don't intend to overclock, you might want to cancel your order if you still can, and then order the normal i5-4670. If you intend to overclock, you'd probably want to cancel the order for the H87 and choose a Z87 board. [There's a bug that makes it possible to overclock with some H87 boards, but Intel will probably "fix" that with some software update in the future.]
It may sound a little strange, but the cheapest 4670k I can find is 10€ cheaper than the cheapest 4670. And I dont intend on overclocking. I think sc2 can run pretty well on high quality (and better) without that extra performance that you get when you overclock it.
And let's hope future games from blizzard won't be as cpu-heavy as sc2 is. Because that's kind off the main reason that I want a new cpu.
Edit: I did some research and it seems you don't even need a bug to overclock on the h87 from now on. The manufacturer's of all kind of new 1150 motherboards (such as the h87 from asus) enables overclocking with new bios updates.

Pretty safe bet. 2gb VRAM might be questionable for 1600p though on max settings with aa, or some particular problem games for max settings
Two 680's and haswell quad? i'd budget ~200w each for the 680's, 150 for the cpu, so you should be fine with a good 650w or 700w unit if you wanna sit without the psu at full load but if you feel like pushing it, 600w should hold you for oc'd cpu and pushed 680 sli
I think sc2 can run pretty well on high quality (and better) without that extra performance that you get when you overclock it
It runs equally shitty on low and max graphical settings in a max fight with any kind of decent gpu, just physics, effects, reflections that can really hurt depending on the situation, oc is totally worth it though

Alright, one more question about CPU coolers.
(Thermalright Macho vs) Phanteks PH-TC14PE vs Thermalright Archon SB-E X2. According to this test the latter two outperformed the Noctua by a couple of degrees, might as well go for one of those in that price category.
The real question for me, since I have never installed any kind of heavy cooler like those myself, what do I have to look out for? Any recommendation for extra thermal paste? Are any of those easier to set up than others (any experience?). For the Macho and the Phanteks I found a couple of reviews about people having issues with apparently pretty stiff springs which keep the cooler tight on top of the CPU and for the Archon, well:
After attaching the cross-brace to the mounting bracket, the pressure-adjusting screw is tightened to the specifications outlined in Thermalright’s manual. The lack of any torque indication on the wrench requires builders to use their best judgment.
And in general... the idea of 1.4kg coolers kind of makes me cringe. Is that kind of stuff really no issue nowadays? ;;

United Kingdom20294 Posts
It's not really an issue (or wasn't for me, with silver arrow, and they are pretty common), get a 240/280 clc if you want to step up in cooling performance without getting big air
The archon's not really massive, either
Not sure if you're asking which thermal paste to buy, or if you need more with a big cooler, so i'l say just get mx4 and use the regular, line/ricegrain TINY AMOUNT that everybody seems to put on 5x too much for
|
Yeah was asking whether I should buy a different thermal paste than what's included with the cooler. No idea how much they differ.
