Meh... you don't need any special paste. Noctua ships with NT-NH1 and the Archon with Chill Factor 3, both are near the top for normal paste.
On that test you linked, I'm pretty sure the naked cooler of the NH-U14S has the exact same performance as the Archon SB-E X2. I bet the difference is the second fan you get with the Archon.
With the Archon, you could skip buying the extra fan for your case. You could move the rear fan that comes with the case to the front, leave the rear fan position empty or move the second fan of the Archon into that position if it'll fit (it's shaped weirdly, 140x150mm instead of 140x140mm and has 120mm fan mount holes).
Noctua seems to do things like send you fan mount parts you lost or a new mounting kit if a new socket comes out in a few years where the current mounting kit won't fit.
About mounting the cooler, you might want to do it with the motherboard outside the case. It's easy like that. Both the Thermalright mounting kit and the Noctua one will clamp the cooler so good onto the board that it won't be able to twist or shift and you'll be able to move the board around by grabbing onto the cooler when you install the board into the case.
I also just noticed the price for this monster: http://www.hardwareversand.de/Intel AMD/67111/Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E.article
That cooler is very similar in performance to NH-U14S and Archon but should beat both because its design can make better use of a second fan.
What's perhaps throwing a wrench into your plans are that both Archon and Silver Arrow are "delivery date unknown" on the hardwareversand page.
|
To be more precise they can't be delivered on ANY of the shops checked by geizhals.de... goddammit. Unless I want to pay 130€ instead of 65€ via Amazon. No, thanks.
Phanteks PH-TC14PE vs Noctua NH-U14S it is. The Noctua service sounds pretty neat tbh, especially considering I didn't know Phanteks existed until today.
|
The phanteks is basicly the best with its rival the thermalright silver arrow SB-E, both are very silent and have very, very good performance
|
I kind of feel like after looking at a test like this one that it genuinely doesn't matter. The Noctua is 2°C hotter than the Phantek while overclocking when you use one fan instead of two.
Will this kind of difference really matter? They pretty much have exactly the same price (+/-5 bucks, assuming you'd buy a 2nd fan for the Noctua). I can mount both so that they blow towards the back of the case, right?
Might just throw pictures at my gf and ask which looks prettier.

Done, Phantek in Red won. (duh, unexpected outcome)

Do people actually mount them so they suck air upwards out of the top of case? (at any time)
|
I had to mount my TRUE to blow upward, back in the day on my old DFI board. I think it was the NB cooler actually (and even more so after you put on a replacement 'sink).
Dunno if it's still relevant today, especially with the video put out by Silverstone back in 2008. I'm still running an old school Lian Li A70A (basic 3x exhaust, 2x intake) design, so I confess I don't have much experience with modern cases.

Hey are you building atm?^
|
Have to run my Saturday errands man I don't have time during the week cuz of work.

hey guys, I want to build a computer and saw for hte GPU they have different makers ie Nvidia Geforce ( blah blah blah) or ASUS Geforece (blah blah blah) or gigabyte. What re the differences between these and are they significant? Also for a gaming computer/one that will also be used for work and CAD is an i7 necessary or will an i5 suffice? If water cooling a must?
|
The GPU is made by Nvidia while their partners (ASUS, Gigabyte, etc) makes the card and handle the distribution, support, etc. The biggest difference that you probably care about would be post-sale support and the display connectors. The other differences like heatsink and PCB are not that big of a deal as all the heatsinks from the big three are quite similar in performance and PCB difference would only matter if you have an interest in overclocking.
Some things in AutoCAD do make use of more cores. Other CAD software, I have no idea. An i7 isn't necessary but it would help.
Water cooling is not necessary. Waste of money, if you need to ask.

Ahh man thank you so much for your quick and detailed replay Im having a look around now :D

Hello guys!
I'm looking to build a PC for the first time for use with school/work (Mainly CAD rendering, MATLAB, lots of papers and all that jazz, little bit of photo, video, and music editing) and gaming!
What is your budget?
I'm hoping to complete my build within $1200 including a monitor. I'm am a little flexible (give or take $100), but I'm hoping for the most bang for my buck.
What is your resolution?
I need to get a new monitor, but I want it to be at least 1920x1080.
What are you using it for?
Mainly CAD rendering, MATLAB, little bit of photo, video, and music editing, and games! Games wise would be SC2, Dota2, Borderlands 2, Metro Last Light and anything else on steam. I want to be able to max out most settings.
I am also going to be moving my machine around (between home and school) every semester and break, so I don't think a full tower would be ideal.
What is your upgrade cycle?
4+ years
When do you plan on building it?
Hopefully within the next two weeks.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I've never OC'd before, but I am willing to put in the time to do it. Would Oc'ing affect my machine because I would be moving it around every few months?
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes I do need an operating system!
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Naw
Where are you buying your parts from?
I have a microcenter and fry's nearby home, and I live in the continental U.S.
Thank you guys in advance. I really appreciate the advice.

answer the questions in the op, and at first glance yeah, a lot of that needs to be changed to be optimized

Remove all extra fans, the case comes with enough fans.
If you don't want to overclock, remove the CPU cooler and choose a cheaper H87 board.
If you want to overclock, you need a 4770k CPU, not 4770. The cooler is too weak for the new Haswell CPUs. The cheapest you should get is probably Thermalright HR-02 Macho from amazon.com or Zalman CNPS14x.
Get a 550 W power supply or something around that.
I'd say you need an SSD.
A lot of people can live without optical drive. To install Windows you can put it on a USB flash drive on another PC.
Do you really need 16 GB RAM? If you don't know, just go 8 GB in a 2x4gb kit and you'll still have two free slots for a future upgrade should the 8gb ever turn out to not be enough. Also try to hunt for a good deal on RAM that's more than 1600 MHz (2400 MHz for example).
Do you really need an i7 over an i5? It's $100 price difference but no difference in performance for most use.

Right now I have an ivy 3570k and. 560ti. Is it worth upgrading to a haswell and a 700 series card? All I play is sc2 and sometimes CSS.
Also I only have 8gb ram. Is it worth upgrading to 24gb?

No, waste of money unless you don't care about wasting money. GTX 560 Ti was already overkill for Starcraft II and getting a GTX 770 / 780 is even more absurd. Why would you get 24gb of memory? Do you plan on using a RAMDisk or VM?

3570k to haswell CPU is 5%, maybe 15% increase in singlethreaded performance (but probably like 7%) depending on application but more difficult to OC in terms of slightly hotter temps and much more complicated settings, it's not exactly worth a platform switch unless you want every single % of performance, and also have a bad overclocking 3570k so that you will probably get a better haswell cpu in terms of volts needed
GPU-wise, my 770 can max CS:GO with a ton of aa and still hold 300fps most of the time, surely if you have a 144hz monitor you can just run 4x aa instead of 8-16x?
