You could alternatively research about those capture cards and how they work. That would make the most sense if you are not satisfied with what you have.

It also said that students should be able to get windows for free at a dreamspark premium university (I checked and I'm there), but apparently it takes some sort of administer given username to get it for free? I don't really know what's going on here. Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, you need to contact whoever is responsible for MSDNAA (typically the IT department) to get your login information.

What I know for sure is, there's no special upgrade product keys. They are all the same keys, so you can use the product key with a normal Windows disc. You could perhaps download an installation media image that's for normal Windows instead and ignore what instruction you get per e-mail when you buy that Windows 8 Pro Upgrade.

Unless he wants his build to be destroyed... change the PSU. @ this price range, he should get an AMD APU and CF it with the 7770/7750. With an APU, that RAM would be a lot more effective and cost efficient. RAM speeds' effects on practical performance are minimal and incredibly low unless paired with an APU. SSD on an incredibly low budget... where is his main storage drive? On top of that, the 840 (non pro edition) isn't that great... By the way, usually the higher the SSD storage amount, the better the performance. i.e. 120 GB SSD speed < 256 GB SSD, in general.

That build will pull roughly 250-300w in normal circumstances.

@Rollin, you seem to have your question answered already, but yes you can get it for free if you qualify for dreamspark premium. My university only offers it to comp sci/computer engineers though as it is sent to our cse .edu address. Hopefully you qualify! But I was able to get win 8 for free ![]() Edit: you can correct him if your advice makes sense... But it's generally understood that skyr has the best advice in town :p

On August 06 2013 23:37 Rachnar wrote: Yeah, you just clearly proved you have no idea what you are talking about. That build will pull roughly 250-300w in normal circumstances. When I had one 7970 in my build, the amount the build usually took (UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, WHICH MEANS GAMING) was above 400W. My CPU is overclocked quite a bit but definitely did not take the bulk of the usage. Also, unless his computer will either be idling away or just doing light browsing, his build will draw about 350W on average. So, unless your definition of normal circumstances is to sit there and watch your computer collect dust, it won't only be taking 250W. Most people would recommend at least double what it needs on average due to the fact that most PSUs are rated @ 50% load. However, since the PSU linked was effective rated @ >50% load... it would be okay for a slightly higher PSU (in the same family). Sure you can run that build on a 450W PSU... it will run, but when that PSU starts blowing up because it was put under constant load over prolonged periods of time, are you gonna take the fall for it? Since you won't just take my word for it, here are some TDP/Power Usage charts of the 7970. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/04/10/sapphire_hd_7970_oc_edition_video_card_review/9#.UgEOtW1aSHs http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7970-ghz-edition-review-benchmark,3232-18.html If you look closely, the minimum @ idle is 100W for just the 7970. That's 25% of the PSU alone ON IDLE. Then look at the amount of power that it draws under load. Tell me, do you think that your 300W would be enough? edit: Here are some more links; http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/06/21/amd_radeon_hd_7970_ghz_edition_video_card_review/8#.UgEQNm1aSHs http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7970-overclock-review,3186-11.html http://www.anandtech.com/show/6025/radeon-hd-7970-ghz-edition-review-catching-up-to-gtx-680/16 http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_hd_7970_ghz_edition_review,8.html http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_radeon_hd_7970_review,8.html http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1668683 http://www.pcworld.com/article/258168/amd_radeon_hd_7970_ghz_edition_review.html Knock yourself out.

360 watts at the wall, with an i7 SB-E clocked at 4.3 ghz to boot. So take away like 10% for power draw at the different spot (or add 10% to the capstone, then ignore the fact that they test with a 130w top Cpu, AND that it is being over clocked, AND remember a capstone is like 92% efficient at all load levels up to like at least 80%, and yes, it will both draw around 250-300w AND the capstone is way more than enough power. That's a 7970, not a ghz edition. Try to cite the proper card. And even the ghz edition only draws 380w in battlefield *at the wall* and your still ignoring the cpu that probably is pulling 80w more than his is.
