You won't get anywhere near them unless you specifically use an avx heavy stress test, which seems to flick the switch for "turn into lava" somewhere in the cpu, but a lot of people use those to judge the architecture when it only actually gets hot in niche situations

Budget: Up to $2000 (I told him it should be much less, but after he gets a keyboard, mouse, new monitor maybe, :S) Resolution: 1080p presumably. Pretend it will be. Overclocking: Because of haswell being a pain, and monetary reasons, no overclocking. No need for multi gpu. Used for newer releases coming out for about 5+ years, including some Rome game, fps games and mmos I guess. Building about now. This is what I came up with: ![]() The shipping kind of bends you over too, so I was wondering if you had any alternate solutions? And how good is the seasonic G series? Other than seasonic, the <$100 PSUs are mostly rubbish/meh on pccasegear as far as I can tell.

Overclocking: Because of haswell being a pain, and monetary reasons, no overclocking Haswell's really not any more of a pain than ivy if you know what you're doing and can put some time into it, it's not exactly "set llc, play with multiplier and vcore" nor really hotter outside of niche loads*, honestly the most annoying thing would probably be instability with a solid multiplier and vcore, i've seen lots complaining of it and i'm doing silly stuff like moving my RAM modules around and switching GPU drivers half a dozen times to try and make stuff run when with sandy/ivy typically an OC either worked or it didn't *AVX disabled small fft tops me at ~87c with 1.32vcore and hyperthreading on, the heat basically only comes with niche AVX loads and i am yet to find a single thing to bring temps up that is not specifically a stress test ![]() Just incase you were refering to heat as a reason for not OCing CPU. I still think it's silly not to have a midrange air cooler, but honestly that was the same for ivy bridge. Not trying to change your mind, just raise awareness

The PSU you chose has one 6-pin connector for PCI-E. The card you chose wants one 6-pin and one 8-pin. You'd need to use an adapter for one of those (hopefully comes with the card) or you could go for a different PSU. The 360W of this one should be enough for the PC, but a PSU with more Watts would have that additional PCI-E power connector. Those shipping costs are a joke. Is this with camels through the desert or what? ![]()

Edit: I have 2 molex to 6pin, and (I'm assuming) 8pin to 6+2pin and 6pin. Maybe I should just get one of the crappier bronze mkII units (they're more expensive, go figure)? Returning items would be a big hassle, and expensive, although as long as there are enough outputs on the psu I can always go out and buy a connector. Any other thoughts on the component selection?

you can just get the cheapest h87 or b85 mobo you find you don't need the asus sound card, the onboard audio will be enough a nicer case like the bitfenix shinobi could be good too, that xigmatek is a budget case you don't need a cpu cooler if you don't OC also with the money you won from this you can upgrade to a 770 or get somethign else (or just not spend it on the computer at all), what games do you play ?

The places I know I can buy from are PLE.com.au (local store) and pccasegear.com (shipped), but both have pretty bad selections so if you know anywhere better that would be very good :D. Shipping wise it comes down to if ~$100 is worth it to have it all arrive at your door. If it isn't you should be able to get all the parts from MSY and PLE (maybe austin and netplus for a part or two). Though PSU choice in WA is shit, there is seriously an antec monopoly. One last thing, MSY has some 2400 ram for $98, seems like a nobrainer unless I am missing something. Edit: I am, B85 won't handle greater than 1600, so you might as well get cheaper ram with your build.

I've been looking at the ChipReview numbers and it seems once things were far above stock that he was pulling better numbers with HT off - noting particularly the reduced std deviation in FPS: http://chipreviews.com/main-feature/main-news/battlefield-3-revisited/5/ Then reading this, it raised more questions :p Source thread - http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/en/forum/threadview/2832654490312763052/3/ Hyper Threading OFF http://www.xtremeeagles.net/images/nova/Htoff.jpg [xtremeeagles.net] Hyper Threading ON spiking 4 times every second like that makes the game feel like your on a slide show http://www.xtremeeagles.net/images/nova/Hton.png [xtremeeagles.net] There's some mention of core-parking or a patch later on. I've never had an HT-enabled CPU, so let me know if I should be concerned at all here haha. This would really be a pure gaming CPU, as I don't stream/encode or really do anything in terms of content creation. I know this is in spite of what I've said earlier, where I was dead set on the i7.
